A peaty, salty, maritime note but not a heavy laphy, and there is plenty of burnt wood in the mix, this reminds me of some OB Caol Ila, perhaps the 18, while I would say that one is a heavier oily malt the nose has similarities. The palate has some bite but also some bitterness and for me is not that well balanced, that is my first impression. Some grapefruit and hints of lemon come through with more salt and there is something woody in the mix. There is also a slight mushroom note, mixed with rice, yes that's it mushroom risotto. The peat grows and bashed your tongue Finish is pretty good , getting a little sweeter. I will try it with water another time

The Jubi-16yo had already liked me quite a bit, but secretly I thought then: the one with a few more turns ... And here we are, a great Laphroaig from the Bourbon barrel with 48%! I tasted it in parallel with a Laphroaig 18yo 48% (white box). The two-year difference is noticeable in the proportion of wood, which is more noticeable on the tongue at 18yo. In the nose of the 18yo is a little dignified, overall perhaps even a little bit more balanced ... What the 16yo in itself but not much worse - just different (very) good. But that is already enough ...
[September, 2019] A NEW limited edition of older Laphroaig (pre-Beam takeover) at a reasonable price of 90 Euro is a must try, for sure. And to make it more interesting I do this in a head-to-head versus the last 16-years old Laphroaig limited edition from 2015 (OLD, WB id 71868) that I bought for 50 Euro (35cl-size only) and which got rather chequered reviews here on WB... ...and both are typical Laphroaig with a fine peaty-medicinal-fruity profile but very different. OLD is rather shy but more complex and balanced while NEW is much more impressive but simpler and a little spiked. Hence OLD is more old-stylish while NEW is closer to the modern whisky zeitgeist (but still a Traditional Scotch-like dram). Usually I prefer the more old-style whiskies but when it comes to Laphroaig I choose the more powerful NEW over OLD. Both are very quaffable, no doubt...

The colour of OLD is deep gold and NEW is much paler at jonquiripe corn. OLD offers a rather subtle profile composed of the trademark Laphroaig aromas of maritime peat smoke, medicinal notes and citric fruits. It is nicely balanced and delicious but neither complex nor impressive. NEW's profile is richer but still not bold, I would say. The peat and the wood is much more dominant but still the fruits, barley sugars and some earthy-herbal aromas shine through. It is more complex than OLD but not as balanced (hence more modern-stylish). I prefer NEW over OLD (by two points). |

NEW's taste is bold and impressive just as we expect from Laphroaig. It offers a fine combination of malty, peaty and wooden flavours in a much more balanced mix than in the nose. The barley sugars are strong enough to withstand the heavy peaty attacks and the wood is firm but never tries to dominate. It is neither layered nor complex but it is undeniably Laphroaig the way I like it. And what a difference to OLD! OLD is rather shy and subtle with more bitter herbal-wooden notes and an unusual sugary sweetness. Still this is Laphroaig-ish and easy quaffable, but it is a little too shy and simple for my taste. Again this is a two points advantage in favour of NEW. |

OLD arrives warming but just very little coating on the palate with a minor drying feeling (cold metals). The initial mouthfeel of NEW is much better with a nicely coating effect and no distracting moments at all. The finish of OLD is of medium length with even more wood influence but it never grows too strong. There is a minor and tasty milk chocolate note towards the end that I like. NEW's finish is much longer and adds more spices and more medicinal notes which increase the complexity. But there is a minor drying-astringent feeling towards the end which is a little distracting, to be honest (now the tannins of the wood demand their toll). Guess what? This time NEW wins by just one point. Water is not needed on both drams, OLD just gets flatter while NEW gets smoother and more quaffable but less interesting. I like both best when neat. |
Prominent nose and taste with quite complexity, but a bit thin.

It's decent Laphroaig, no doubt, but it really suffers in comparison with the 2020 version. Also, considering the other official Laphroaigs that it competes with, I'm not sure I see the USP of this bottling. If I shell out more money for an older version, I'd certainly like to feel the benefits of the added age. As things stand, I'd prefer a (cheaper) Lore or over this.

Dry, herbal, pungent, peppery, with a big blast of untamed, acrid peat smoke up front. Perhaps my memory fails me, but I get the impression that this is somewhat less saline and coastal, less redolent of iodine and maritime aromas than the Platonic ideal of a Laphroaig. Perhaps the first-fill bourbon wood has toned that aspect down a bit? On the other hand, it's definitely not too sweet on the nose, which can easily happen with this cask type. All in all, good, mature Laphroaig with a focus on the smoke, but not overly complex. Not quite sure I'd have pegged this for 16 years of age, either. |

Bitter smoke upfront. Earthy, peppery, powerful, with a big bite (actually, it's even a bit hot, especially compared to the 2020 version). Can't say that the first-fill ex-bc wood is very noticeable. Very nice and well-measured oak at the death, with a lovely honeyed-and-herbal aspect. All in all, though, it's a bit too bitter and biting for my taste. Of course I might be all wussed out by the softer, mellower 2nd batch that I'm comparing this to. But I feel like, if I want an untamed, raw Laphroaig, I'll go for the Quarter Cask or the Cask Strength - what do I need this one for? |

Laphroaig 16 is a special bottling that was mainly available on Amazon. Will it exist again? Who knows – and above all, who knows at what price. It is a classic Laphroaig made from 1st fill ex-bourbon barrels. There is no information about filtering and coloring. The color could actually fit at 1st fill and you would have to filter it at 48.0%vol. neither. But it's just Beam Suntory... glen-efze.de

A good example for what maltsters are happy with regarding aged LP nowadays. Not a bad malt, pretty decent, but a farcry in regards to complexity or elegance compared to older bottlings, even the 200th Anniversary imho. All in all on the same level but b/c of higher abv. and boldness. However I like the 15 a notch better (same points). The 16 is too expensive for what it is, 75 EUR max. should be fine.

I am very happy that Laphroaig has brought out this whisky, because he is very successful and fully meets my expectations. With 48% alcohol he has a nice punch, he does not look dyed. And Laphroaig has not experimented with different barrels here, which also benefits the malt. Laphroaig 16, 48%, an official bottling and exclusive to Amazon in the UK. Short review with Teresa at Melody Bar. Lovely aroma - medicinal, iodine, just the faintest faintest sulphur or coal gas detracting. Taste is soft and gentle for Laphroaig, salty-spicy, lovely lingering peat smoke. It's actually better than I expected. It's a very good whisky that grew on me a lot over time. Doesn't have the flavour punch of younger Laphroaig but you could really settle into this one on an armchair of an evening 3.8/90
A really nice nose at first, a good but somewhat fragile palate, and a short and somewhat disappointing finish characterize this whisky. Nose had me wondering what went wrong with the maturation, as it is really well composed and expressive at first, but flattens within the first five minutes of the dram. Typical notes you would find in younger Laphroaigs (of the past?!) like tar, bacon, kelp and iodine are missing, but that was to be expected as this is obviously a weaker spirit compared to the 18yo, which has a similar profile, and also had these particular aromas only in hints. Sadly, just another better-than-average Laphroaig expression of late. I remember having had a Triple Wood from around 2014 that would give this 16 year old a good smite (at a third of the price;). At least, there are no cloves detectable. One dram note.

A lovely sipping whisky. The nose is mellow but complex and satisfyingly salty. The palate is fairly mellow, but has lovely spicy and sweet notes, and the finish is mellow and pleasantly herbal and spiced. As you may have gathered, this is a mellow whisky. Don’t expect a peat slap like the 10 CS or Quarter Cask. I was initially disappointed by this, but as I sipped, I really came to appreciate just how pleasant and approachable this is, without skimping too much on the complexity. Nose: Strong Laphroaig peat, but tempered somewhat by honeyed sweetness. Roast pork, dried fish, applewood smoke, charred marshmallow, and black pepper. Rosemary, sage, and licorice, as well as mud and tide pools. Sweeter notes of vanilla, banana, cotton candy, and crème brulee. A little bit of chipotle pepper comes out after a bit more rest. Maybe a bit of rosewater. Palate: Medium-light texture. Sweet and salty on the arrival: more apples, honey, some toffee, and a bit of pineapple. Rich spiced apple cider comes along with the smoke on the development. Ashy and peppery in the middle, with antiseptic, sauteed mushrooms, and pickled ginger. Some dark malty notes in there too, maybe some soy sauce. Citronella and herbs on the back end. Finish: Somewhat short. Green tea and light herbs. Flamed cinnamon stick, espresso ice cream, chocolate chip banana bread, ginger-spiked honey, and satisfying sweet campfire smoke. A bit more pineapple.

Iodine, medicinal cough drops (ricola). It's smoky but actually it is not dominated by the peat, as expected of a somewhat-older Laphroaig. The peat is maybe the second or third thing I'd notice nosing this. It has more to it than the 10-year does, more of an oily/meaty beefy quality to it which is totally not there in the ten (which smells similar but thinner in comparison). Although, that is partially its higher ABV. Add enough water, and suddenly it smells very close to the 10. Adding water gives more of that meaty algal smell to it. A pile of seaweed washed up on the beach smoked over a campfire. It's less sweet, more ... gnarly, than what you may be used to getting off Laphroaig. The smoke level is rather similar to the 10, but there is more alongside it. |

A very, very lazy way to explain this is "to the tongue, 1.5-2x as strong the flavor of your typical 10-year 43%." The 10 tastes sweeter but also, thinner in contrast. There is an inherent kind of barbequed meat quality to it, that is definitely more pronounced here than usual. This accentuates the licorice medicinal note it has fairly well. It is somewhat woody but not really notably so, which is actually kind of surprising to me, it is rather similar in tannic tones to more common Laphroaigs. |
