Quick hit review. Travel retail whiskies are rarely a bargain, most of the time you simply overpay for what you get. Pleasant and straightforward, the nose of this Balvenie reveals canned peaches, pineapple and peppery spices. The Madeira cask adds a nice layer of ripe fruits, apricot jam and cloves to the well-behaved and easy-drinking malt. Fructose, raisins and mild tannins remain in the moderate finish. Not a revelation, but very quaffable indeed. RATING: 3.7/5.0 stars ≙ 85 pts → ABOVE AVERAGE [+]
Traveling dram bought at duty free on my way to Islay. Thought there would be enough peat on arrival... Pleasing but not exactly cheap. I enjoyed it on my travel as an alternative to peated, but doing the review of the last dram comparing it in a line of other wine finishes it falls a bit short. No regrets buying it, but can't say I would buy another.

I like madeira finishing, it gives a lighter version of a longer sherry cask maturation and in that way is not masking over too much of other flavours. This is not bad... medium red fruit. Round and gentle without alc feel. |

I'm not going to complain about 43%... but then I am, it would have benefited from a few more percent as the arrival feels weak. A bit of spice helps a little. More chili like than pepper. Red berries. More berry than fruit. |

To be kind I can say medium length. A tad bit drying. My previous two drams had a rising projectory, this is falling... not the way I like it. |
He has a very fine nose: lovely wine, a slight sweetness, fine notes of wood. This continues in the mouth although it becomes a bit spicier, tart. The barrel selection seems successful to me. A bunch of grapes come out some vanilla, milk chocolate. Very nicely done!

I had high hopes and have been fully confirmed. Danlow's description of the taste is quite accurate. Long legs run down the glass. Very oily and beautiful. The finish is a bit too easy for me. 86-90 – Wow, really good one, need a bottle

The spirit, aged for many years in traditional American oak whisky casks, exudes warm honey and vanilla notes. It is then further matured in Madeira drums, which adds complexity to the body and brings forth flavors of fresh peach, orange, and hazelnut.

Good whisky, with lots of fruit, sweetness and a delicate bitterness that emphasizes the taste. Unfortunately, the price is a bit too high for the amount of vol. It would be great if it cost 25 € less.

If it's a Madeira barrel and 43 percent, then please Balvenie. You can easily give more than 87 points here, because the quality is really great for the key data and the price of 100 euros, but I'm not a big fan of Port, Madeira or wine barrels in general. But it's done well here.

The mouthfeel is wonderfully oily and creamy considering the key data. The finish is medium long and maybe a tad too harsh. |
The whisky has a beautiful deep dark golden colour and looks quite thin in the glass. Little sticks to the glass which often indicates a whisky with little body. The single barrel bottlings were great. I am not so fond of this watered down Balvenie, not even as a starter to the evening. I had it first in line for the last blind tasting and actually no one scored it blind above 80 points.

The old Balvenie problem. Really pleasant and promising on the nose, but too much wood on the palate and on the finish, too spicy and tart. Overall, that's not enough to be really good.

This is a very straight, but very tasty malt that doesn't come up with very good complexity, but is very drinkable and well made. Truly one of the best Madeira whiskys I know. Very very nice. 120€? Well, not that, but I would pay around 80-90 euros for this delicious drop. Maybe I'll see him at the next airport for less. Clear recommendation, but everyone should be aware of the prices in the karen. At the end of the 1st bottle: It has a nice nose in itself, but the taste is a bit tart and dominated by wood. On some days it seemed super fruity, on others this acidic wood predominates. I think I'll sell the 2nd bottle!

Honey, oak, berries, but the palate is thin. Tasty, but I’d take Caribbean cask over this

N) Raspberry, red currant, rose, green apple, grape, orange zest, yellow The refreshing scent of red berries is strong. A lively, life-like scent. You can also feel the fragrant scent of roses, as well as the green apple scent and fresh grape scent. It also feels like orange zest and perfume-like citrus. Unusually, you can feel a bit of the Campbelltown-like sulfur smell. |

F) Tannin, raspberry, fruit tart, oak / The texture of tannin and the sourness of raspberry linger for a long time. This sourness combined with the malty taste makes you feel like eating a fruit tart. Lastly, the lingering taste of oak lingers for quite a long time and wraps around the mouth. This is a complex but not good feeling. |

Considering the price, it is low cost-benefit. Of course, it has a beautiful presentation that raises expectations, I can't help but say that it has a good body and is oily, but the acidity weighed heavily against it for me. When it comes to Madeira Wine, Loch Lomond Madeira for me is still unbeatable in terms of delivery, pleasure and value for money, even though it is more alcoholic and thinner.

Acetic acid predominates, with a typical white wine vinegar burn, on a vanilla and malt base; with patience and meditation comes white raisins, peach, creme de cassis and white pepper. With water it greatly reduces the acidity and, consequently, the burn, opening up the vanilla and malt, it is still vinegary, but it stabilizes into a sparkling rosé. White chocolate and white cranberry appeared slightly. |

Stable part with a rather fruity character. Strawberries and raspberries on the nose. In addition to the fruit component in the direction of port wine, the whisky has a light oak spice. The finish offers subtle caramel. In the morning at 5:30 a.m. when things have to go faster, an ideal booster for the working day. In the evening at 9 p.m., it also goes through as a connoisseur whisky. A good whisky, which is priced a bit expensive at 95€ in the end. Despite everything, one of the most interesting 43s (%) I've had lately. So at least in the morning at 5:30! 86.50 points
Another disappointing piece of bullshit from Balvenie: at first the ratings are 88 points and the price is like for a really good whisky, but in fact it’s just another piece of crap that there’s nothing to remember.

Great nose, but then unfortunately flattens out a bit. As with many OA Balvenies, a few more volume percentages would have done him good. Nevertheless, the Madeira finish is well done. Doesn't really do anything wrong, just has potential for more.

Conclusions. A very decent and pleasant whisky. As for me, the finish in a Madeira barrel was quite successful, despite the strength of 43% abv. Although, of course, for a whisky of this level, a strength of 46% abv would be much more suitable. In this variant, at a certain stage, there is a slight lack of density in the taste. However, even with this shortcoming, the finish of the spirits in the used wine barrel significantly expanded and enriched the profile of the tested Balvenie in comparison with standard bottlings. Score 87

This 2nd bottle in the Balvenie tasting, was a Balvenie 15 Year Old, finished in Madeira casks for 46 months. Apparently, it’s a travel retail exclusive. The Madeira cask finish (for 46 months) certainly helped impart more interesting notes for this bottle. ABV% isn’t everything, and I’ve had plenty of great drams at lower ABV levels, but for this bottle, the 43% ABV made the dram taste underpowered, just like the previous bottle. The thin, almost watery mouthfeel didn’t help, and the short tannic finish were the main issues.

The nose is sweet, followed by lacquer. In the depths there is saltiness, florality, citrus zest. Taste: moderately sweet, more peppery, leaves a varnish on the tongue. In short: Balvini is a quick sip whisky. A quick sip concentrates the taste more, resulting in thickness, sweetness, and red berries. Taken together, the effect of berry jam seems to be...

Slightly pleasant vanilla flavor, fruits. But really too expensive for the price
I organized a button here and tried it yesterday. Here are my notes. Unfortunately, this whisky is on the weak side. The flavor profile is not very complex and the barrels don't exactly stand out. In my opinion, you first have to look for the Madeira and even then the barrel note is rather mild. After a bit of time in the glass it opens up a bit, but for the PLV (around €100 at the moment) this is not a whisky that I have to buy.
5cl sample, 2nd tasting (average 84 points): An elegant, but somewhat restrained and, unfortunately, somewhat boring nose. Some fruit in the form of red apple and a hint of peach. Slightly malty and spicy, which carries over into the palate. It becomes fruity again at the beginning, with the spice gradually building up and lingering at the end, almost reminiscent of dry wood (a cupboard wall). Not very interesting. A decent whisky at the time, but with some weaknesses and just a bit boring. First tasting: 85 points, second tasting: 83 points = an average of 84, which I think is generous enough. I also think the initial maturation was very generic and only slightly enhanced the finish. The relatively low alcohol content doesn't help either. Too expensive. There are more interesting bottlings from Balvenie.
I heard a lot of bad words about this whisky, but I still decided to try it myself. The nose is very pleasant at first, fruity, green apple, ripe juicy peaches. After about 15 minutes it seems to start to sour slightly, slightly fermented fruits, candied berries appear. The taste is too alcoholic for 15 years. The alcohol covers the work of the barrel. The sweetness of the wine is present, but it does not open up right away, over time. In general, this whisky opens up very well after a little oxidation. The taste is berry jam, a little fruit, a little flowers. Overall, I wouldn't buy a bottle at that price. There are much more interesting wine options, and cheaper.
