I like this, this "Russian wood" works for me, but there's something missing at the end... What doesn't work as well is the price tag.

Tasted this little seamonster at the 5 year jubilee tasting of Passie voor Whisky in June 2017 Nose: I am a big fan of the classic Ardbeg 10, and first thing that I noticed is that this one is much more friendly and easy approachable. It does have the typical sea / peatiness of Ardbeg, but missing the meaty BBQ character. It has less citrus and vanilla, but a bit more pineapple. Taste: quite salty and a bit liquoriceshy. The peat is present but more a bit of maritime peatness, as Laphroaig. Finish: it's a bit disappointing and short.in general a funny expression, but it does not make it compared to the standard 10. having double the price of the 10 also does not help...

[May, 2017]  I had this dram at the distillery during the Feis Ile (served generously by Jackie) and later another one during a Feis Ile tasting at Bonn. As I did not like the Kelpie Committee Reserve (KCR - I scored it 81 points) I had no big expectations on this, especially after Mickey stated that this is just a diluted KCR (so no new batch as with Perpetuum, simply the same stuff at a lower abv).  But even these low expectations are not met:  The nose is strangely cheesy (what I did not find in the KCR) besides the herbal aromas (camphor, sage).  The mouthfeel is okay but not impressive.  On the palate the bitter notes are not as powerful as with the KCR but the whole taste is somewhat weakish/flat.  The finish is medium and very sweet but it dries out (paper, cardboardy). Yes, this is drinkable - but no, I do not like it and I will not buy any bottle even at a very low price.  This virgin wood from a strange Russian substate in the caucasus region simply does not work for me - and even Dr. Bill Lumsden (the mastermind behind all special Ardbeg releases) must have had some doubts - or why else he diluted the Kelpie casks with an even bigger amount of standard ten years old?  According to my information the mix is 45 per cent caucasian wood casks and 55 per cent standard ten years old... PS:  A limited release of 60.000 bottles - could all investors please turn on their brains???

Interesting Ardbeg, hard to scoring, best part is the nose, complex, but too much for taste, especially the oak. Still the Uigeadail, Corryvreckan, Ten trio is the price / value champion!

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2017/10/21/mnc-variety-night/ Kelpie is a Scottish term for a mystical shape-shifting water spirit that inhabits the waterways of Scotland. It’s aged in virgin Black-Sea oak casks and bourbon barrels. N: Potent nose, thicker than the An Oa. Yet more lactose notes [a feature in this evenings tasting] and sulphury & mineral hues [from distillation?], with other more particular notes that include flower pollen, suede and peas. T: Arrives as expected and does all the right things thereafter. More oily vegetal/lactose movement later on. F: Grassy and fruity with lots going on besides. C: As Spam said ‘It tastes like Ardbeg you could get back in the naughties, but now at three times the the price’ - £95 [Oct ’17]. Good point and inflation aside, this is a very good whisky, a polished Ardbeg. Scores one more point than the An Oa which is half the price of this Kelpie.Scores a B[-]

N- Soft smoke with rather complex offering, chocolate, sour berries, ginger, musky and muddy, some alluring decay vegetation, or perhaps toward kelp and fishy notes. Whiff of brandied raisin underlay which is nice, but the emerge of white oak at the tail bring the rather fine aroma down to earth. Thin and light overall. P- Balanced, restrained spiciness and sweetness, hefty salts with bonfire wood smokes. Lingering white oak and "out of place" spices again. Does get sweeter overtimes. F- Medium, coat of smokes, some quality marmite, sourish salted sweet malt, peppery. Overall, rather generic when compared to the siblings. — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur.

The Kelpie is a massive whisky, with rather extreme flavors from the fresh Black Oak. Something I find extremely successful as an experiment, that is certainly not mass compatible.

COLOR: Gold (without dye) - interesting story and cask selection from 2017 - good whisky, also slightly better than the classic TEN, but also not outstanding (even a bit disappointing) - even for the issue price of around €100 at the time and In any case, the currently (2023) called prices are (for drink) much too expensive compared to the quality

Pleasant enough, industrial, smoky-rubber whisky, without any special undertakings, but solidly made, solid, soft.

Vanilla cream and iodine. Then candied ginger, camphor, a pinch of salt, and the beautiful smoked peat, explosive, typical of the distillery. Intense wood, almost spicy. Conifers. Eucalyptus leaves. Citrus fruits and limestone iodine, grapefruit, lemon zest. Thick, choking smoke. Gas oil, engine oil. Stars of salt. On the palate, it is soft and suave, then the spices come to light, cumin and cloves. Heavy, thick peat. Some exotic fruits, prickly pear, banana, papaya. Final not very strong but long, which develops little by little, on cola and charcoal. Lignite. Resin. Very intense wood, I feel like eating a wood cake. Dried fig to finish. It's an interesting experience. I found it a bit more complex than the Ten, but not significantly better. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2021/10/ardbeg-kelpie.html

46% Vol. Aroma: intense and complex, rich, oily smoke, dark chocolate, smoked fish, notes of seaweed, a spicy herbal note and spicy black pepper; with a little water, typical Ardbeg flavors such as creamy coffee, pine resin and some smoked coconut develop Taste: peppery, toffee, Turkish coffee, smoked ham and a lot of dark chocolate, then peach, hickory wood, clove oil and some spicy olives in the aftertaste Finish: very long, clove, tar and toffee 51.7% Vol. Aroma: The smell - wonderful, intense "dancing" aromas on the nose, complex and intertwined with strong peat smoke, oily, dark chocolate, smoked fish, algae and an intense herbal note. In addition, waves of spicy, black pepper. A splash of water brings out the classic Ardbeg notes, with creamy coffee, smoked, soft butter toffee, and pine resin. There is also a hint of smoked coconut. Palate: a peppery mouthfeel on the palate followed by a richer crescendo Finish: molasses toffee, Turkish coffee, smoky bacon and lots of dark, dark chocolate. Fruity, lightly flavored peach and notes of hickory wood with clove oil follow. In the end, a touch of black olives. Notes of the distillery

For me, a very inconspicuous whisky, without any character. Could be anything, just nothing special. The weakest bottling of Ardbeg's Annual Releases.

A good whisky, but there are better Ardbeg bottlings. The standard bottlings can easily compete with Kelpie and are significantly cheaper.

sweet and mentholy on the nose. not as peaty as expected. you need to get closer to/in the glass to get the full ardbeg experiance. turns out to be pretty ashy, but remains sweet and honeyed. not the best, but not the worst ardbeg too

We are going deep into Whisky Lake 2.0 today, maybe all the way to the bottom in more than one way, so I best put on my atmospheric diving suit. The exact depth is 15 Ardbeg limited releases in one go, with a current 10yo (83 pts.) as the benchmark. Yes, I have written my last will and testament. The lineup from the newest to the oldest bottling is: Smokiverse (81), Spectacular (82), Heavy Vapours (77), Ardcore (76), Scorch (83), Blaaaack (81), Drum (79), Grooves (80), Kelpie (83), Dark Cove (84), Perpetuum (80), Auriverdes (83), Ardbog (87), Galileo (85), Alligator (88). Compared to my previous scores for the bottles I've already tasted, only Auriverdes felt a bit better this time than the first time I tried it many, many years ago. Unsurprisingly, both myself and the tasting panel voted Alligator, Ardbog, and Galileo as the best three. For me the bottom of the barrel was Ardcore with its offensive blandness and youth, but the whole tasting panel voted it the 2nd worst in the lineup, disliking Heavy Vapours even more. Thanks for the tasting, Maija & Pete! Kelpie's not bad but it can't quite follow the previous release, Dark Cove.

Somewhat different than usual, the nose is very light compared to the aroma. The palate is salty-sweet with intense smoked aroma. This time it's less the campfire but more the salt and the maritime. I really like him - 23.12.2017

Nose: Pine. Lemon pledge. Vanilla. More ash than medicinal. Palate: Salty, pine, tar, oily. Finish: brine, salt, tar, smoke Summary: The Saltiest Ardbeg I have ever had. So much brine. It was actually quite surprising. I enjoyed it in this setting, but I wouldn’t seek out a bottle. Preferred the 10 because it had more citrus. 85/100

Well, compared to the Ardbeg Kelpie Committee Reserve this is quite a diluted fellow. The Committee Reserve has been a nice dram with its Russian Oak maturation but diluted it's a very poor Ardbeg.Concerning price/performance ratio: 5/10

A, for me not quite typical, delicious Ardbeg. I find it very successful, even if opinions differ greatly. The Committee Release is for me but clearly the better variant of the two sea spirits. The 5% more alcohol makes the flavors stand out more and bring out additional flavors. In addition, the CR was in the issue price even cheaper than the generally available version.

The virgin Black Sea oak casks from the Adyghe Republic in Russia were used for maturation of Ardbeg Kelpie. And this whisky from has then been married with regular bourbon cask matured Ardbeg and bottled for Fèis Ìle 2017 at 46%. We can feel the influence of Black Sea oak cask on all stage of tasting whisky. They brings notes of wet wood on nose, palate and finish. The aroma is an intense, sweet, salty and peaty. Kelpie starts with notes of creosote, sea salt, ripe fruits, beewax, wet wood, perfume on nose. The palate is salty, peaty, spicy and dry with creosote, salt, wet wood, pepper, dust, grilled meat, oily notes. The long finish is peaty, spicy and dry with creosote, wet wood, sweet fruits and salt notes. It’s a very tasty and peaty whisky. Kelpie has a good balance between sweetness, peatness and wood notes.

Tasting Note by The Producer Nose: A wonderful, intense, ‘dancing’ nose, with lots of different, intertwined aromas – powerful, oily peat, dark chocolate, smoked fish, hints of seaweed, and a curious, sharp herbal note. Waves of spicy black pepper. Palate: A peppery mouthfeel is followed by a crescendo of rich flavours. Treacle toffee, Turkish coffee, smoky bacon and lots of dark, dark chocolate. A curious burst of peachy, estery fruit, hickory wood, clove oil and a suggestion of black olives. Finish: Seemingly lasting forever, with deep, deep, almost subterranean flavours of clove, tar, and rich toffee.

Very nice piece of Islay, quite complex despite it's a NAS whisky (feeling a bit young though). Every sip gives a feeling of an ocean breeze (immediately after the first sip I recalled my diving trip on the Pacific). Typical Ardbeg sweetness feels after the smoke wave. It's a big pity that Kelpie isn't widely available anymore but still it can be purchased from some places.

Wow, I did not expect to like this as much as I did. It’s a no-nonsense peat parade, but it’s complex, creamy, and has that deep savouriness that I really enjoy in Ardbeg. It totally works at 46% too: there’s no heat at all, but certainly no lack of flavour either. It all adds up to a deeply enjoyable dram that I hope to find some more of sometime. Nose: Rich, tart peat. Burning birch logs, seawater, wet moss, clayey earth, and dunnage warehouse. There’s some sweetness in the form of charred marshmallow, agave nectar, tart pear, and lime zest. Some unsweetened oat cakes, walnuts, mild fennel, and light pine resin. I kept coming back to a fresh tomato note. Salted plantain chips, and hints of chipotle and fennel. Palate: Medium texture. Creamy vanilla and stonefruit right up front, followed swiftly by a peat avalance. Campfire, creosote, iodine, scorched earth, and acrid smoke. Intensely savoury: a smorgasbord of grilled meats. Strong oak, grapefruit pith, toasted (burnt?) nuts, strong black coffee, and extra-dark chocolate. Finish: Long, smoky, and savoury. More oat cakes and black coffee. Lingering chipotle, green apple, and lemon.

The aroma is a bit weird, but not necessarily bad. The taste is a bit lacking, and the aftertaste is too bitter and woody for me. A shame.
Нос 83 The first scent I recognize is old oil, followed by a fair amount of peat mixed with charred wood. This is complemented by honey, pineapple, and aged wood. Not bad, but not great either.
Вкус 82 Quite salty and bitter with a rather shallow flavor. You'll taste some sea salt, seaweed, and oak, along with a touch of lime and honey. Otherwise, there's very little to taste, unfortunately.
Финиш 78 The finish is medium-long, with oak taking center stage, along with flavors of peat, charcoal, and dark chocolate. In other words, it's exceptionally bitter and drying.

Nose: Smoke, perceptible with slight alcohol and bitter elements Taste: Smoke a little bit unpleasant at times, and then a bit of hidden spices in the background Rating: 83 | 100 Long smoky finish. No no it wasn't good. A regular 10-year-old Ardbeg is better in my opinion.

The fragrance is a bit closed, but it is clearly a smoky aroma based on chocolate, sea tones, polish for furniture, smell and fine spice. Taste is probably the best that Kelpie offers. The smoky chocolate, the delicate spiciness and the subsequent fruity onset of peaches and apricot chrysalis develop after the smoky smoke motives. It is very juicy, tastes are mingling with each other - a really good affair. Inspiration is, of course, revolving around peat and woody and marine tones. So drinking is good, but not at the price sold in the Czech Republic. I think it's quite out of the way, like the other Ardbegs. That's not good

The palate is green, as is the nose. Then salt and black pepper appear. The sweetness is much more pronounced in the taste than in the aroma - fattier, darker, nougat, coffee with milk, milk chocolate. The whisky is ungodly young, young and uncouth.

89 points. A very successful Ardbeg. He needs a lot of time in the glass but it pays. Whether the differences to the Core Range are so serious or not, everyone has to decide for themselves. I really liked it and got a nice character from the Schwarzmeereiche (or wherever). I like the normal Kelpie better than the Commi and therefore he gets one point more. Tasty, tasty, Ardbeg. Little "Ardbeg", the Ten is undoubtedly better and more representative. A little peat and a lot of sweetness on the nose, a little spicier and piquant on the palate. There is also a savory part between the vegetable and the sea water, if you leave it for half an hour in the glass. Not bad, but not very memorable.

Ardbeg is known as "undoubtedly the most impressive distillery in the world". The house was founded in 1815 and was just saved from closing in 1997. The distillery is located on the storm-swept, rugged and famous whisky island of Islay off the west coast of Scotland. The third edition for Ardbeg Day; this limited edition was created in honor of the sea and its mythical creatures that surround the Ardbeg distillery. The Ardbeg Kelpie is matured in new oak barrels from the Black Sea region of the North Caucasian Republic of Adygea. Color: brilliant gold. Nose: Intense, oily, peat smoke, dark chocolate, smoked fish, algae, notes of herbs, pepper. Taste: Peppery, notes of molasses, toffee, Turkish coffee, smoky bacon, dark chocolate, hint of peaches, wood, clove oil. Finish: Long-lasting, hint of black olives, cloves, tar, toffee. perfect as a gift

Those virgin casks suck quite hard. I wonder what the guys at Ardbeg had in mind when they went for this bottling. Most likely they thought that there are enough fanboy's around to buy this disaster...
CluaranDeilgneach 84 01 nov 2025 10:23 pm
An interesting nose in this one. Kelpie is considerably younger to be sure, but also sweeter than Ardbeg TEN, with a more primordial and maritime accent. Sweet peat, coal, seaweed, wet logs, warm sand, sugary algae, a hint of dried herbs, wild honey, and sweet toast with salted butter are all present. Ripe apples, juicy pears, baked apples with cinnamon, and fresh grape juice are also noticeable. There's also a hint of green, unripe vegetables - green pepper. Ardbeg Kelpie is an interesting edition, offering something new to the well-known profile, but I would take any of the present core-range editions over it anytime, considering price.
MattDoobie 79 12 jul 2019 6:43 pm
The colour is yellow gold and it looks to have a great texture by its super slow legs. Reviewed after 30 minutes in the Glencairn glass. Nose Kippers and powdered sugar, smells as weird as it sounds. Brine, seaweed and oak. There’s a lot of smoke here and even more salt. Rubber and soft vanilla. Pretty complex nose but not the most pleasing one. 20/25 Palate Syrupy and mouth-coating arrival that develops into powdered sugar battered seaweed. The oak is present and very nice, no bitterness. Then some creamy chocolate here and a little bit of spice. Peat, salt, vanilla and I’m happy to report, no kippers! 23/25 Finish Short finish, slightly drying with some caramel sweetness and oak tannins. 18/25 Value and presentation. Bottled at 46% with no chillfiltration, it is well presented. No mentioned of colouring so I’ll assume there is some in there even though it’s fairly light for a virgin oak matured whisky. Value wise this scores poorly though. If I recall correctly, this released at over 200$ CAD in Ontario, over twice the amount of the stellar 10 yr old. Yes it’s a special yearly release but that’s just marketing, this is an NAS whisky with an unappealing nose and too short a finish, yes the palate is stellar but that’s really it’s one saving grace. 18/25 Total score 79/100

Another average NAS bottling from Ardbeg at an unreasonably high price. It feels very young both on the nose and in taste, and the finish is unmemorable. I admit, however, I was sceptic going into this, which may influence the experience. But I must say, to me, the good name of Ardbeg is diminishing because of official bottlings like this.
