GlenDronach's brand reputation tanked when Brown-Forman decided to remove the 'non-chill filtered' from the label, but let's give this malt a chance. Appealing and rounded, the nose combines apricots, raspberries and cherry jam with walnuts, mint and baking spices. The light and juicy arrival is followed by drying oak, eucalyptus and dark chocolate. Black tea, orange zest and notes of coffee remain in the medium-length finish. It is a quaffable modern sherry whisky, but this 'Revival' comes nowhere close to the old batches released under Billy Walker. RATING: 3.9/5.0 stars ≙ 86 pts → FIRST-CLASS [-]

A full on sherried nose that is on the meaty side which hides the dark fruit to some extent but you know they are there hiding in the background. The palate is on on the sweet side with stewed plum, blackberry and red apples with a nice touch of spice but a metallic note creeps in which loses it a few marks. As you go on a decent toffee note emerges and the spice increases so that probably balances things out with the metallic note I mentioned earlier. It starts behaving like a fat on the palate blends with the sweetness increasing after a few minutes. This 2018 offering is still a quality malt but not a patch and the early batches.

This re-release of the Revival is now a mix of Pedro Ximénez & Oloroso sherry casks. The first Revival was only on Oloroso casks.
looks thinner and less refined than its predecessor on me - both complexity and the depth of the flavors is rather superficial - much more complex than the 12er but the distance to the 18s is also very large

A different beast altogether from its earlier incarnation, and one that by all rights should have gone by another name. A revival of the Revival? Not really. A good contemporary sherried whisky with an age statement and a characterful distillate? Certainly.

PX and American oak up front, along with a slight sense of heat (or, if you're more positively inclined, warmth) and some rather fresh-seeming wood - and the spices that brings: ginger, nutmeg, some soft cinnamon. So yeah: raisins, dates, chewy toffee, and all that, but also a real sense of the distillate coming through, perhaps more so than in the older version. Less integrated, obviously younger, more spirit-driven, more shaped by quercus alba. Of course all that was to be expected, and it's a shame that pretty much all of us who taste and discuss this feel they have to point out differences to the "original", simply because the owners apparently believed they had to piggyback on that bottling's stellar reputation. If this had been brought out under a different name, its own merits would've been more apparent. It's pleasant and substantial, after all, with some hefty sherry and meaty, weighty distillate playing in tandem. Also, with some time in the glass, some lovely savory umami notes appear, with some liquorice, and somewhat surprisingly - a floral / citric aspect. Definitely nothing to sneer at, but of course it pales in comparison with its predecessor. Edit: gets better and better after some time in the open bottle; I've upped the score by two points. |

As with the nose, a lot of PX and youthful American oak at first, with a peppery, gingery bite to it. Then more sweetness and red fruits come in, followed by leather, soy sauce, charcoal, and pretty pronounced wood spices. As Serge would say: very modern. It's good though, and as with the CS versions, I like that we can actually get more of an impression of the distillery character when the (fresh / first-fill) sherry is less pronounced. Nothing to sit and marvel at, but a very good drinker around the 50-60 € mark. |

I'm not a GD expert, but I already strongly remember that I liked the old 15er much better, for me even with the strongest under 20er OA was. This one lacks some grounding, but also depth.

Pure sherry which expresses itself in an avalanche of fruit, raisins, quetsche, fig, almonds, light, slightly burnt caramel, pears in melted chocolate, woody, elastic leather, cereals, pineapple in syrup, all very nuanced. Silky and tasty on the palate, just as fruity, mirabelle plum and grapes, fresh apple cut into quarters, prune juice, a touch of mint, spices that rise quickly. Robust and long finish, on earth and licorice stick. Amarena cherries in retro-olfaction. It's really surprising, I don't think I've ever tasted anything so fruity, and especially so varied in the fruit. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2020/10/glendronach-15-yo-revival-new-version.html

Even fresh bottling did not disappoint. Excellent, interesting, deep Glendronach. The abundance of older sherry releases immediately distinguish such releases as 10, 12, 15 and make them a special niche for the distillery, of a completely different plan, which at least somehow diversifies the idea of their products. 22 23 21.5 21

This Whisky is okay concerning its price-Performance-ratio! (Well, at least if you can get one for roundabout 55 Euro) Seeing so many people chasing this newest expression the Glendronach marketing did a good Job naming this one Revival! For me as a fan of the former Billy Walker Glendronach Style this is a slap in the face! This stuff is just so much worse than the old Revival and the new Style is kinda generic in my book as well!

N) Nutty, milk chocolate, sugar, sugarcane, espresso, raisins Wow, it’s just sweet. A straightforward sweetness that anyone would immediately sense. It feels more influenced by PX casks than Oloroso, with no over-aged or medicinal notes like those sometimes found in a 21-year-old. The nuttiness, slightly reminiscent of peanuts, is followed by a range of direct, sweet aromas. The distinct scent of raw sugar and sugarcane juice is especially intriguing. |

with water: it becomes significantly fruity, all orange notes are evident, but the oak spice also comes to the fore I would leave out the water Conclusion: nice thing, even if clearly different from the old revival. You can tell it has the new barrel combination with Olo + PX, which makes it sweeter, but not too sweet. The differences are so great that I can't say which one I like better, because you can't directly compare the two.

First off a a rich nose, getting sherry, tobacco, cloves, figs dates raisins. The nose rates top for me. Taste : Surprisingly subtle notes initially after such a great nose.. Slight creaminess, buttery. Buttery malt, figs, sherried notes, dark fruits, dates raisins, maple syrup. Sweat caramel and nutmeg, cinnamon spices. Finish: cloves, peppers, spice, nutmeg. Nice and long. Not picking up any off notes, however a bit lacking wow factor for me. It a bit too well rounded and somewhat bland. Having tasted the 12 yo, I can’t see the double cost value for the 15 yo and would go for the unchilled 12 yo.
Glendronach 15 Revival 46%. Sample bottled at some time prior to Dec 2018, consumed early 2019. Very dark colour. Aroma is quite spiritous. Softest sherry wood character. Muted and slightly estery. Lots of estery fruity spirit (and smells younger than 15 years) but also very sherry. Taste is salty and quite sherried. Red fruits are followed up with restrained balanced bitterness and suggestions of smoke. Quite nice but my expectation level was higher given the reviews I had read. 3.45/82

A good whisky for lovers of the distillery. It is neither dry like its predecessor, nor greedy like an old Px, this new version loses one point but remains completely drinkable. In comparison with the previous version, the addition of the Px barrels makes it lose a little of its identity by bringing it closer to the profile of the 18yo Allardice. In the end, it is therefore more its positioning in the range that questions me than its specific qualities. The value for money remains good at a time when prices are soaring. EDIT, with one year of ventilation, the influence of the oloroso increases and it becomes more homogeneous.
incense I liked that the caramel roasted coffee beans, cocoa, and aroma were pretty straightforward. This is the only thing that seems a little familiar..? It was the scent I wanted. I immediately thought of Dronak. I don't really notice the raisin-like scent. taste Dry and astringent.. Oloroso sherry? I can feel the alcohol content, but it feels like the oldest whisky I drank today. The aftertaste lasts a long time. Glendronach 15 YO Revival Category: Single Malt Manufacturer and bottler: The Glendronach Distillery (Brown - Forman) Region: Highlands Fortress: 46% Volume: 700 ml Bottling date: 06/22/2020 Barrel type: Pedro Ximénez & Oloroso Sherry Casks Min. aging: 15 years Filtration: none Dye: no Nose. Brown raisins, orange liqueur, dates, mint chocolate, cocktail cherries, dark honey, dried blackberries, plum jam, lingonberry jam, hazelnut cookies, melted butter, lacquered wood, vanilla, ginger. At first closed, not intense and harsh, the fragrance explodes over time with a richness of shades and undertones. Taste. Concentrated very sweet taste of sugar molasses and fruit syrup made from cherries, plums, lingonberries, blackberries, black gooseberries, dried fruits (dates, raisins and dried apricots), dark chocolate with orange marmalade inside, poured on top with melted butter toffee and sprinkled with cookies and hazelnuts and only with a small mint and ginger refreshing bitterness, which is why it is not perceived as cloying. A powerful complex taste, but at the same time it is not perceived as something transcendent - it is drunk quite easily. Aftertaste. Continuous. Fresh. The sweetness of dried apricots, the dryness of hazelnuts, mint chill and ginger continue to "play". Outcome. Cool whisky, a bright “sherry bomb”, the golden mean between softness of drinking and complexity of execution, quite sweet, so in the warm season it may not be perceived as well as in winter, although it will be just right for those with a sweet tooth. Rating: 87 out of 100.

Unfortunately there is just something about modern sherried whiskies diluted to drinking strength that puts me off. There is a staleness that I just can’t get past. Sherried whiskies are best enjoyed at higher strength but that’s just me :)

Smell: dark dried fruits, indicating depth, great balance, caramelized brown sugar, alcohol very well integrated, freshly ethereal, hazelnuts, chocolate tones, orange zest Taste: finely spicy oloroso sweetness, dark fruits, fine wood spice, dark forest honey, burnt caramel, cinnamon, very well integrated alcohol, plum, tobacco, medium to long finish with a pleasant bitter note Colour: saffron, medium water rim, clear Conclusion: The first batches (2018/19) of the new edition of the 15er "really delivered" - not with the "fat notes" of the old Billy Walker bottlings of the 15er, but rather with a slightly lighter, but still dark fruity interpretation, which is still drinkable even after the third dram - this also provided a clearer (and for me quite welcome) distinction from the 18er/21er standards. Unfortunately, the current bottlings (2023) seem to have lost some of their quality - the rating therefore only refers to the bottling from January 30, 2019...
The 12-year-old and 15-year-old share a similar core profile, but the additional 3 years of aging bring a deeper, richer sherry influence. While the 15-year-old offers a more intense experience, the price-to-value ratio starts to feel less appealing. However, for deep sherry lovers, this bottle is still highly recommended.

The dominant note is grape, reminiscent of rehydrated dried berries. A slight alcohol warmth is present but not overwhelming. The aroma develops into spices, melted caramel, and honey, with a touch of barnyard mustiness, leather, and oak. Compared to the 12-year-old, the nutty elements are more pronounced, adding a more mature depth. |

The body is fuller and has a more balanced structure. Flavors of dark chocolate, dried tropical fruits, and berries emerge, complemented by oak, almonds, and nuttiness. The sherry influence is deeper and more integrated, creating a smoother yet bold experience. |

The finish is medium to long, dominated by nutty and dark cacao notes, with layers of berries and oak adding complexity. The lingering nuttiness and deep sherry influence make for a satisfying and well-rounded ending. |

Now and then you get the feeling that something newfangled sweetness (American white oak / Bourbon casks) has been spruced up with newfangled, fresh sherry casks. But all in all, the whining is at a high level. The whisky is just really delicious. And the good old (European oak) barrels from the good old days that you remember are no longer available in the required number. All in all, it's really delicious whisky either way. More of that!
I really like Glendronach. I think number 12 is very cool and positions itself well among the "competitors". Oloroso + Pedro Ximénez. Let's see what each one has to contribute.

Firstly, zero alcohol. This whisky is very well integrated between barrels and distillate, it has a light fruitiness that comes from the distillate reminding me of white fruits (banana, pear). The Sherry complements it with milk chocolate and not-too-strong dark fruits, I would say a date or a peach. The PX here may be contributing to the milk chocolate, but it's very subtle. Everything is very well integrated; if you spend enough time focusing on smell, you'll discover quite a lot. |

Slightly spicy, good mouthfeel (not overly oily but medium to more so). The spices come through here, perhaps black pepper and nutmeg. There's also the clear sweetness of milk chocolate. The dark/dried fruit also appears more towards the end with a more mature touch that almost resembles a fruit preserve or perhaps a jam. I think it's more like a tart. Very good, it has several layers and as you leave it in your mouth you discover more flavors. |

The finish brings out the sweetness of the fruits and chocolate, and unfortunately it's of medium to short duration. Perhaps a higher ABV would make it more interesting, but it's far from bad. |

Well, I like it. Once you step over the "Revival" bit in its name and just focus on what's in the bottle it's not bad and doesn't hurt the pocket book too bad either. Good fruit, sugary, cinnamon, PX dominant though Oloroso makes an appearance on the palette with some bitter, slightly nutty notes. It's sort of like the Batch 7, but where that one gets a bit "grapey", the 15 Revival manages to hold it all together in what is a rather good sherried dram.
New to whisky? You'll like whisky. Experten Experienced whisky lover? You already own this one and if not you do now. Don't like whisky? After this one you will. This is the golden standard of what a smooth, accessible and affordable whisky needs to be.
Glendronach 15 year old - 46%, NC, NCF A vatting of PX and Oloroso casks from Glendronach. Bottle date 2021/11/03. I paid 72 USD. This whisky is at the forefront of a huge debate that occurred in 2021 about chill filtration. I will leave it marked as NCF although the distillery's methods may make it so that they are not comfortable labeling it as such.

sweet then drying, heavy honey-like malty sweetness, a hint of orange peel, heavy fig, herbal complexity, moderate walnut, light molasses note The palate slightly falls off compared to the nose. Very balanced and has nuanced cask play. The distillate is good but gets covered up pretty heavily by the casks. Rich and viscous mouthfeel. Good, but probably not as great as the stuff that was far older than the age statement on the bottle. |

very long, malty burst, ethanol, espresso, dark chocolate, complex dark herbal notes, light tannins, light nuttiness, lingering orange peel bitterness Great lingering finish with a decent amount of complexity present. It has a bit more ethanol present than I would prefer but otherwise great. A good offer for the price I paid. This is not necessarily my type of whisky, but I enjoy the complexity and nuance present. Great if you can find it for less than 80 USD, but I think this bottle may be the last time I see it for that price as it has already crept up to 90 USD around me. 87/100 |
Dried fruits, raisins, vanilla, wood, quite a long finish but also a slight alcohol.
Dried cherries, plums, raisins, green apple peel, raspberries sprinkled with vanilla and cocoa, poured with a mixture of toffee and nut liqueur and finally "sprayed" with squeezed orange peel. On the tongue at the finish there is an additional peppery and paprika contrast. Medium to long finish, similar to the aroma.
Tasted at The Oak Barrel members xmas party 2018. I found it very woody on the first encounter - like chewing on a fence post. Later on in the evening I came back and didn't find so much wood.
a shadow of himself :(

So, the controversial conclusion… The new Revival certainly has big shoes to fill and as a standalone 15 year-old whisky it is a great product, does it meet the high bar of the older brother – sadly not. This is not necessarily a bad thing; however, nostalgia kicks-in and you can’t help but compare the older, richer discontinued version to the newer, sweeter version. Honestly, Glendronach should have been smarter and branded the new release differently, rather than rehash the Revival name as it’s a solid core range product in its own right. Sometimes it just makes more sense to have a clean break from the old and make way for the new. We’re certainly not disappointed with the new 15 Revival as we enjoyed this release for what it is. Colour wise, it’s lighter in appearance and slightly spirity on the nose, less body and richness and less heavy on the sherry. We have to keep in mind that the older Revival was matured solely in Oloroso casks and rumoured to be considerably older than the new, true 15 year-old, vatted Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso release. https://maltmusketeers.com/brand/glendronach/15-year-old-revival-2018#tasting

Although this new revival is no where near as rich as the original it is still an excellent dram and much better than the review here indicate. If you can get this for $90 or less it is worth it. Not up to the level of the 18 but the 18 is not 50 bucks better either. Better than glengoyne 18 for me.

Very impressive 15-year-old whisky; the upgrade from the 12-year-old is very noticeable. This expression is much richer and more complex, yet smoother, with a massive and impressive mouthfeel. The aroma is quite comparable to the 12-year-old, featuring dark fruits, chocolate, and caramel. On the palate, it starts very sweet before hitting you with notes of oak, wood, dark fruits, apricot, banana, and chocolate. The finish is very long and warm, offering biscuit and chocolate flavors with a pleasant maltiness. Overall, a very impressive, well-made whisky. It’s quite sweet, but impressively so.
