Ledaig, age 18, batch 3. Sarfran to coppery, the dram can not deny his sherry past. How will this understand with its smoky side? Anyway, the combination is promising ....
Нос 85 Smoked meat, old gum, PVC, but also a fruity note with rhababer, blackcurrant, orange and some heather honey. A sweetness is behind the superficial smoke flavors.
Вкус 87 Medical smoke and sweetness, then pepper and mint. Honey, herbs and green apple as well as quince give the whisky an amazing freshness. It is very complex and it takes some time to see all the facets, but it is really an exciting malt with its own taste profile.
Финиш 86 Smoke and sweetness on the palate with a sparkling mint that give the whisky a lively length. The palate stays fresh and the smoky notes are harmonious.

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2019/01/06/malt-n-copper-christmas-tasting-2018-part-2/ I’ve also had this before. It’s peated Tobermory finished for an unspecified time in Spanish sherry (oloroso) casks. Mull’s only distillery dates back to 1798 when John Sinclair established the Ledaig distillery. Like most, it’s faced a chequered history, closing many times [41 years in 1837], and closing again in 1930 for 42 years, 14 years after re-opening. Burn Stewart acquired the distillery in 1993, re-launching the Ledaig brand again in 2007. Distell took over from Burn Stewart in 2013. N: It’s a top ‘ole, large vegetal number with sweaty pickled onions, sweet-sour Thai flavours, sweet crisps, [violin] resin, scallops, squid ink, Tupperware, cabbage, smoked turkey sticks [Twizzlers?],….. The nose at least, is a winner. I guessed this as an Islay through & through. T: Arrives just fine with a buttery > medicinal touch. A decent slugger this. F: Smoked butter. C: Decent peated whisky, if a little same-y. Scores a B[-]

A super smooth and drinkable Ledaig.

Weird This 18 years old Tobermory on sherry casks appeared in 2015 for the first time. I felt it was somewhat ‘schizophrenic’. I presume that this third batch, from 2016, will have the same split personality. The nose is indeed a weird but nice mix of tar, rubber, smoke and buttermilk with red fruit, candied oranges and apricots. The first whiff is somewhat of a scary moment, but give it (and yourself!) some time to get used to it. Suddenly you’ll notice that it’s actually pretty good (at least, that was my experience). It rolls softly across the tongue, nicely oily and a bit spicy on salt & pepper, nutmeg and a hint of ginger. The fruit shines through in the guise of oranges and strawberry, but that does not last long. Soon the whole is awash in brackish water, cold coffee and chewing tobacco. The smoke becomes intense but disappears just as quickly. Some late walnuts and camphor. Yup, this one is just as crazy as the previous one and I am fine with that. The finish is medium long, smoky, peppery and sweet, but dies quite a bitter death on oak and liquorice. Weird is good, right? This certainly is both. Thanks, Pat!

Often I do not like this kind of whisky (dirty smoky character), but this one makes an exception. Wonderfully harmonious maritime character with notes of tar, leather and ash combined with a Sherry sweetness and great smoke profile. I like that.
Нос 86 first slightly musty; smoky (campfire); old leather sofa; spicy; behind it show increasingly beautiful subtle-sweet sherry fruit notes; maritime character
Вкус 88 soft but also intense; Notes of tar, leather, ash and tobacco dominate; somehow dirty but delicious; with subtle sweetness; spicy; salty maritime; clear smoke note resonates
Финиш 87 spicy; slight spiciness (pepper / chili); Licorice; pleasant tart echoes; smoky (ashy)

COLOR: dark amber, reddish, copper - a very special, idiosyncratic single malt - doesn't really knock me out now - on the whole, I am more disappointed than surprised - has a very idiosyncratic smell and taste - very nice wooden packaging but far from one very good 18 year old single malt
rottendon 90 01 jan 2025 11:09 am
Yes, it is really great. The nose is extraordinarily powerful and complex, in the mouth I wish it had a few percent more, it would certainly benefit a lot from that, it was actually a bit too civil for me. But even so, there is actually nothing wrong with this malt. It combines the maturity of 18 years well with the rough, dirty characteristics of Ledaig. A really outstanding quality, especially for a standard.
Нос 92 Immediately after pouring, there are dark sherry fruits and smooth smoke. After a few moments, orange zest is added. The smoke is somewhere between a coal fire and a dying campfire. The sherry fruits disappear relatively quickly, and now there is bacon and soy sauce as well as a little peat sweetness. After a good hour of standing, the nose has settled on orange zest, cold campfire and a little iodine. Add a pinch of disinfectant and some floor wax as well as a dash of lemon. Overall a little more closed, but well integrated. With movement, the whole thing seems a little fresher, mint comes through, also a little pine honey. In between there are notes of candied apricots, baked apples and pine needles, also ripe peaches and eucalyptus. Just to clarify, the unmistakable, intense and dirty Ledaig character is absolutely dominant; even if there are many delicious things to be found here, this is by no means a Sunday evening meal. A really great nose! The warmth of your hand makes the smoke more intense and slightly phenolic, lots of disinfectant and floor wax, later very intense peat sweetness and then equally strong notes of candied fruit. When fully warmed up, the malt again seems very citrusy and maritime, salt hangs in the air.
Вкус 89 In the mouth, the whisky is initially very dry, lots of smoke, the start is moderate, the mouthfeel is oily, towards the end there is dark, heavy, malty peat sweetness and coffee candy. Oilier in the second sip and now with distinct citrus notes. Less dry and somehow more elegant. This impression is reinforced again in the third sip, from now on balance and elegance really dominate.
Финиш 90 The finish is initially carried by the sweetness, accompanied by a pleasant bitterness. Overall, the finish is quite long and the chest area is slightly warmed. It dries out further towards the end until sweet ash remains on the tongue at the end. The finish also seems more elegant in the second sip, and significantly less sweet.

...very idiosyncratic, unusual, special... and yet, well done! But I don't need more than a 10 cl sample because it doesn't suit my taste! [Color:] = mahogany;
Нос 81 intense, artificial, wood polish, charred gum, spice, wood smoke, berries;
Вкус 82 unfolding aromas: lots of smoke, ash, spiciness, tobacco, spices, pepper, salt, liquorice, dry, woody;
Финиш 83 only medium long and still really great: spice, smoke, salt and lots and lots of liquorice;

Direct comparison with Batch 02. The differences are not great, because of the aromas there are many repetitions. They're both dirty. The 2016 is a little sweeter, more open and livelier and is therefore slightly ahead. You just have to get along with the typical Ledaig profile.
Нос 87 sweet and honey-like, vanilla, oranges and cherries, some plum jam, raisin liqueur, warm bread, over everything a soft layer of ash (almost soot), cinnamon and finely spicy oak wood, mineral, caramel and chocolate, walnuts and raisins, hay stick to the smoked ham and echoes of Ricola, nutmeg
Вкус 85 with pep, sweet and malty, ash on the honey, again a mineral touch, black smoked ham, very stimulating spicy notes, ricola, soot, bitterness, sherry with aromas of prunes, sour leather
Финиш 84 sweet, warm ash, sherry, smoked ham, cinnamon spice, plum jam, some grassy oak wood

Нос 89 A very beautiful and also very rich nose. Distant campfire by the sea, as well as lignite fires, salty breeze, a hint of smoked sausage, caramel, milk chocolate, baked apple, passion fruit, gravy, dried orange slices, gingerbread, dried peaches, oak spice.
Вкус 89 Beautifully balanced and powerful. For a Ledaig, it's almost elegant. Pleasant smoke, campfire and lignite fire, fleur de sel, caramel, chocolate, peach, orange zest, pine forest, iodine, mineral notes, oak spice.
Финиш 88 Medium-length finish. Smoke, caramel, chocolate, peach, dates, tobacco, oak spice.

Classic Leday. Musty, stinky, dirty. But with this OA everything is relatively moderate and almost suitable for the masses. Ledaig and Sherry is just a great combination. It shows once again that the UA Ledaigs can show a much broader spectrum of the distillery.

Once you get through the unusually heavy rubbery notes in this whisky it's a solid and typical Ledaig. The sherry adds an extra layer of red fruits and darkness.
Нос 87 Initially a heavy rubbery note and some leather, like sniffing the sole of a new gym shoe. It slowly becomes more accessible with sea air, some floral notes, blackcurrants and citus fruits. Chocolate, vanilla, liquorice and a nice note of bacon develop in the background. The peat is relatively light.
Вкус 87 The peat is a bit more prominent om the palate. Various citrus and red fruits combine well with salt, coffee, cloves, garden herbs and celery. At the same time it's quite oily and a healty dose of dirty and industrial notes: rubber, leather, a bit of sulphur and a muddy note. This is Ledaig after all!
Финиш 88 Waves of medium intensity peat, in a more ashy and medicinal style now. A stronger maritime dimension unfolds with seaweed, mussels and minerals, followed by grapefruit, blackcurrant, chocolate and again some rubber and leather. Lingers with some mint, curry spices and tobacco. Very nice indeed!

Very strange Ledaig: it smells disgusting from a freshly opened bottle - hydrogen sulfide, some kind of rot. But after a few months it is incredibly transformed: dessert wine, nuts, dried fruits and smoked malts, warm rubber. I would like to ask the question: what was that? Do you really have to wait six months to try whisky? Smells like masochism

NOSE: Camphor, tar, asphalt, salty ropes, engine oil and old engine room, coffee, peat smoke. Also sweeter notes of treacle, dried fruits and dark forest honey. Hints of menthol and eucalyptus. Delightfully “dirty” peat and sherry nose. With water a little sweeter and less dirty peat. (89p) TASTE: The arrival is medium sweet and medium peaty. The mid palate is rather dry, with peat smoke, some tar, liquorice and just a hint of pepper. Continues into the long aftertaste. Nice but not completely balanced, I would actually have liked a bit more sweetness here. (87p) Water balances this out better. (88p) TOTAL SCORE: 88 points.
kringo86 87 05 apr 2026 12:34 am
Most comparable to a very sweet salted caramel, a bit too little smoke for a ledaig - the cask was probably very strong.
Erik1908 89 16 feb 2020 5:15 pm
Whereas the 10y old Ledaig is a straight in the face peat-slam, this 18y old is a completely different ballgame. This one is much milder and complex. A recent article from Thijs100 about "the older the whisky the milder the peat-smoke", makes sense in this respect.
Нос 90 Beautiful earthy and sweet sherry notes. Some BBQ flavors as well mild and lovely peat-smoke.
Вкус 90 Mouth full of spices, sweetness and again the mild peat-smoke. There is a lot of things happening here. Quite complex with various layers of flavors.
Финиш 88 Quite long, warm and tasteful. Dried fruits rather then spices in the finish.

Addendum 11/10/2020: At the last tasting we noticed. Smells and tastes like engine failure.
Нос 88 First the sherry influence on the nose, but very interesting in combination with the Ledaig distillate. Fruity, it is almost fermented fruit. Smoke and fruit dominate
Вкус 89 Here also very dark fruits, like in a rum pot.
Финиш 88 Medium length.

It stands to reason that the degree of this regular model should be enough, but I don’t know why it gives people the feeling of a silver-like pewter tip, or whether Finish is not better than a barrel. The idea of charcoal roasted fruit is good, but it is realized. It's a bit of a loss, there are too many peat components, and there is no fun.

Нос 86 Indeed the nose is very expressive and dirty. There is peat, much like in a cow stable. The pungent aroma is infused with stewed berries which works wonderfully well. Salted plum, salty seaside breeze, odor of mudflat... and fruitiness which is a bonus. So far so very good. It would score better if the orchestra could last longer.
Вкус 81 Big U turn! It is not that it is bad. But the palate just could not keep up with the nose! To be fair, the chocolate is good, and it is smoky enough, but the palate seems silent compares with the nose. Black tea runs the entire show. Sadly disappointing.
Финиш 82 Smoky, ashy and peppery finish, and tannic, like black currant skin..

Nice, intense and dirty smoky notes. You won't find the fruity sweetness with dark dried fruits like in the following batch here. Clear increase over the 10-year-old with more aromatic smoke.
Don Cassi 84 08 jul 2021 2:37 pm
Bah what a stinker! Sauerkraut, cowshed, damp cardboard and wet wood. Sounds disgusting, but it is very aromatic and independent in itself. In the mouth it lies like oil, very soft and creamy with heavy, sweet sherry fruit notes, which intensify in the finish and are supported by chocolate, nuts, orange peel and sea air. Length: 6/10 Very idiosyncratic and complex island painting that was definitely not born for an all-day dram, but knows how to please in its own way. Grade: 2+

A really easy to drink Ledaig, as far as you like the profile (barn aromas). You should also like smoky whisky, although I find it very mild in this category. However, I am also a regular Laphroaig drinker and therefore used to smoky whisky. The whisky is characterized by the typical Ledaig note. For me, that means a positive association with a farm and the stables there with plenty of hay and grain. There are also ripe dark fruits and prunes. He is still slightly restless on the tongue. The finish is unfortunately medium to short.

Aroma: restrained, initially tar, clearly roasted walnuts, assorted lollipops, dried fruits (apples, pears), smoked meats, salami, menthol, old lacquered furniture. A little breathing there is a distinct corporate flavor of "Soviet" rubber with a sweetish tint, soot, bake, lime, the same dried fruit, but with the addition of fine autumn foliage. Very good, deep, multi-faceted fragrance! Taste: rich, walnut, mineral ash, spices, black pepper, dried apples and pears, dates, milk caramel, dried fruit compote, minerals, iodine, salt. Finish: longer than average, dried fruit, walnut and knitting partitions from it, salt, ash, a little zest, oily, enveloping. Traced all the same notes of rubber, rubber. Rating: 90 The result: a warm, versatile Ledzhik, with perfectly fitted components to each other. The bias is already moving from phenols and smoke to the nut-dried fruit spectrum, unlike dozens. Meditative whisky, poured dram, I want to stretch and stretch, very good!

18-year-old Oloroso Ledaig: This is what made it worth coming here for. Nice neat smoke with sherry on the nose. On the sip there is a pleasant sweet smoked whisky and a slight hint of medicine at the root of the tongue.

Great whisky! Reminds me of Talisker but with more smoke!

What balance! A smashing peaty dram with great complexity and panache'.
Нос 92 Peat, Sherry, oak, red fruit, light cocoa and sea spray. Big, beautiful, pungent nose.
Вкус 92 Warm sherry, leather, oak and smoke. Cherry and red fruit ooze into the complex favor profile effortlessly. This second wave of flavors across the pallet adds sweetness and complexity. Delicious. The peat is very present throughout but does not dominate. So balanced. Oily with a great mouthfeel. Top notch.
Финиш 91 Great finish. Peat, smoke, more cherry and warm bread. Good length. very smooth and savory.

Hello dear whisky lovers - I'm back... I continue the cycle of my reviews, so far from previously tested "archived" samples ))) Some time ago, "a few drops" of an adult (18 years old) Ledaig Olorosso Wood Finish fell to the bottom of my GlenCairn, and now I am sharing my impressions with you))) ???? Color: rich copper ???? Aroma: juicy smoke, which is surrounded by the sweetness of molasses... the traditional "burnt rubber" for Ledaig has not disappeared anywhere with age, but it feels very delicate... minerality, a drop of camphor oil and such a concentrated apple-plum jam, sprinkled with sweet-spicy spices... ???? Taste: assertive and oily in taste... again molasses, spices and jam in taste echo aromatics... the astringency and bitterness of bird cherry berries are also noticeable... dark berries and spicy spices inherent in sherry aging right there... but in my opinion they are slightly concentrated-artificial, not delicate... ???? Finish: A little more than average, hot chili pepper, a little dark chocolate and astringency of oak... ???? Conclusion: the release is quite worthy, but among the few Ledaigs I tasted, there were releases that were more delicate... although the release is quite mature, but for my taste it lacks just this very maturity and delicacy... ???? Points: 87

The 18-year-old ledaig has a very good price/performance ratio. I like the flavor of this whisky very much, and it can bring a new experience to many spirits lovers.

Was he worth it? Absolutely had my nose in the glass when I woke up this morning. The nose; Peated certain, sweet to very sweet peat, burnt black coals, slightly smoky, really earthy, wet clay, peat, sour cheese (cream cheese), mineral, wet hay, maritime salty, shavings of wood, the musty of opening a old cupboard, in addition of course Sherry, chocolate, citrus fruits, strawberry, lots of cherries, grapefruit, light sulfur and medicinal notes, something of a leather smell. Taste; Salty licorice, and also present laurel licorice, hazelnut, anise, black pepper, licorice, chocolate, very spicy, honey, lots of red fruit mixed with lemon, again that sour cream cheese, bitterness, anise-like. In terms of strength, he certainly has nothing to be ashamed of! There is a lot to discover, and I certainly haven't tasted and sniffed it yet!

a uniquely-peated dram.. bringing pervasive earthiness to the otherwise overflowing dark red fruit deep sweetness of the malt distillate with a late touch of the sea’s wind wrapping the whole with an evanescent North Atlantic island bow
