At the first glance at the barrel composition, the thought briefly came up, what this fuss - as with the current 12 CS - is actually supposed to be, Springbank has always been quite good with a mix of bourbon and sherry barrels or with another 2- Barrel combination (including finish) driven. But if the end result is right, the way there doesn't really matter. And here the end result fits, it is not too thin despite its only 47.8%, it delivers a great play of flavors in the nose and on the tongue. The finish could have been a little longer, but that's a complaint on a high level.

.... and there it is immediately, the Springbank nose: spicy, slightly fruity, mineral, slightly bulky in a positive sense. The initially only slight fruitiness increases over time, you can find freshly sliced peaches and apricots, a little lemon juice, a few pieces of pineapple. A well-seasoned spice mixture of grated ginger, marjoram and chervil on top. Constant companions are the pebbles bathed in sea water, whose aroma offers a good counterbalance to the fruitiness. |

Mild and almost creamy start. Lays incredibly creamy on the tongue, at first you might think that you have spiced liquid cream in your mouth. But then dry wood is added, the creamy impression evaporates. The fruits from the nose appear more reserved on the tongue, appear more dried than freshly sliced. Marjoram, chervil, some parsley. Nougat pralines, marzipan bread, crème brûlée. As a counterpoint, chain fat, warm lubricating oil, damp pebble, salty sea spray. |

Medium-long finish in which the fruit flavors have withdrawn and leave the field to nougat, coffee beans, dry wood and a little chain fat. Is pleasantly dry at the back. |
This one needs some time, at first quite modest. Later on more powerful, a lot of red fruits and whiffs of smoke. Pleasant dram, but certainly not worth its current price of >200 in my honest opinion.

I kind of haven't bothered much with Springbank recently due to the insane prices and limited availability, but this is truly excellent and makes me wish I'd gotten around to hunting for a bottle. Still, I wouldn't have wanted to pay much more than, say, 130 €, which is probably an instant disqualifier.

The Springbank character has no trouble asserting itself against this eclectic mix of cask types. Sour-phenolic-metallic-grimy-mineral edginess all over. Pretty refill-oriented, which is good news. Even without water, it already looks pretty murky in the glass, exuding a thick, viscous quality. After a while, I get ripe tangerine, a honeyed barley sweetness, and assorted stone fruits. Really good, reminds me of better batches of the 18-year-old. |

Sweet and juicy attack, with an incredibly well-judged ABV that highlights the texture of the spirit without distracting you with any alcoholic burn whatsoever. Grunting noises of approval... Smoked bacon and apricot jam, raspberry tarte and elderflower cordial, all atop a foundation of slightly industrial/metallic-seeming griminess: old copper coins, dirty workshop rags and tools... I'm really reminded of Ben Nevis. This is excellent, with the casks providing additional fruitiness while never pushing themselves too much into the foreground. |

Good, but just a bit too much of the wine sweetness (a little artificial). It might be just worth its release price. Rip-off flipper pricing of well over €200 (this b.t.w. equaled first hand pricing at some Dutch webshops) is just ridiculous. For complexity you might just as well buy a 12 yo CS or a 15 yo.

A classic Springbank profile, with its farmhouse and vanilla notes, the mellowness of Madeira wine, and a hint of smoke. Lemon and grapefruit, white plums, Mirabelle plums, and Reine-Claude plums. Meringue and pastry cream, but the barnyard aromas remain in the background: earthy hay, sheepskin, dry soil. Beautifully balanced. Slightly ethereal and briny. On the palate, vanilla and citrus emerge, a sparkling twist, a melting cake, vibrant spices, pepper, and cloves. Bites of orange chocolate. A long, cereal-like finish, powerful, with notes of cola, wheat, barley, millet, and straw, still with vanilla undertones. To be honest, I tasted the rum more than the Madeira wine, which I only really noticed in the finish. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2023/06/springbank-2002-madeira-wood-17-yo.html

The whisky was initially matured for 14 years in a combination of ex-rum and ex-bourbon casks and was then further matured for 3 years in fresh Madeira hogsheads. The result is a strong, dark whisky that is only available on the secondary market at corresponding prices. The funky Springbank style combined with the elegance of Madeira promises an interesting whisky. glen-efze.de

The anticipation for this rehearsal was subdued and I wasn't expecting anything. But now I am very annoyed that the whole bottle is not on my shelf now. The worst part about it ... now I would like to have one. (but unfortunately already well over 200 €) Where exactly such bottlings are the reason why I am always looking for the unicorns in the whisky forest;))

No hype, just a great whisky. EYE/NOSE Strong golden tone. At first I notice the very subtle scent of a distant wood fire. In general, the Madeira has a lot to offer on the nose. Apple aromas and fresh wood notes, for example, which over time give way to spices such as allspice and freshly ground black pepper as well as green olives and coconut. In the background I notice a slightly leathery honey sweetness that seems to weave everything into it. PALATE A little ginger spiciness introduces the enjoyment. Then the typical sweetness of rum raisins, which together with the creaminess of the whisky is reminiscent of Malaga ice cream, although not to the same extent as is the case with the Bushmills 28yo 'Causeway'. The sweetness finds its congenial counterpart in a fine acidity that reminds me of fresh, white grape juice. And then - typically Springbank - it gets a little dirty. The distillate leaves its unmistakable mark on the whisky. Wonderful! A really intense malt. The splendid mouthfeel remains, while the restrained Springbank smoke slowly but inexorably fights its way to a place in the front row. FINISH/CONCLUSION Loooooong and warming. Oaky, a little peppery, leathery again, and yet the fruity sweetness is present here too. Reminds me of pineapple that spent a little too long on the smoker. Great interaction between the rum and bourbon barrels from the basic maturation and the Madeira finish, impeccably crafted. What can I say? From the Springbank 'funk' to the popular sweet fruits, the creamy consistency and the long and powerful aftertaste. The Madeira offers almost everything you could want in a malt today, without revealing any real weaknesses or even failing due to off-notes. Thumbs up! Springbank is and remains 'The Malt Drinker's Dream'. >> Maltkanzlei FB Review #353. >> More notes and reviews on Facebook at: #Maltkanzlei

Hey this works! Leave it to Springbank to do some cask magic and come up with a good dram. I don’t think it hurts leaving out their sherry casks that are quite often sulphured... An old style profile, nice sweet fruits, tablet, vitamins, soft herbs and sweet malt. Very drinkable above all, if not overly complex.

with water: no, it is very well adjusted, actually it lacks a few percent. Let's try it anyway ... now the rum sweetness comes better with pineapple, vanilla, tropical fruits, also in the taste, but unfortunately it also flattens the mouthfeel Conclusion: A very modern Springbank with a lot of sweetness from bourbon, rum and Madeira barrels, I would almost describe it as a Black Art of Springbank, because a lot happens here and the modern kind of the sweet barrel types mixes up nicely. Anyone who wants a dark, sweet springbank will love this one. For me a little too much of a good thing, maybe a little too modern

(TASTED BLIND) NOSE: Initially notes of Sherried maturation. Later sweet old wood , baking spices, dried fruits, creamy notes. If it's sherried I suspect refill barrel(s). But I'm not certain we are talking sherry casks here. Nice rancio notes plus something a bit stale (less nice). Comes and goes in quality and liveliness in a way. (swinging between 86 and 88p in my book). TASTE: The arrival comes with dry wood, and a slightly metallic twist on fruit and acidity. The fruit is there but it's not properly alive anymore, like in a dry Rhine Riesling which has passed it's peak but still lives on, now mainly on its acidity, not its fruit. On the mid palate unspecified old liqueur (sans the sugar), a slightly oily mouthfeel, tinned yellow fruits (primarily pineapple). But then, also in the mouth this comes and goes in quality and liveliness, suddenly it's more fruity and fresh again. More metallic on the downs, less when up. Hard to judge. (86p-88p). FINISH: The finish takes its cue from the mid palate, really. When that's up, this is up and alive and vice versa. (..p). OVERALL: Given my notes above I would not be surprised if this is not an older bottling which has spent some decades in glass, now veering inconsistently between full life and semi death. Interesting, for sure. Total score 86-88 points. Yes, really. Post revelation: Well, it just goes to show, doesn't it? Blind tasting can be ruthless but still is the most honest way to taste.

The nose starts immediately with notes of toffee, blood orange, strawberry jam, milk chocolate and a drizzle of peat that accompanies everything and prevents it from becoming too flat on the sweetness. In the mouth it is full-bodied and oily, the spices are felt with notes of pepper and cinnamon, then the scents perceived on the nose return, caramel, chocolate, dates, cane sugar, finally notes of leather, petrichor and tobacco are perceived. the finish is long with hints of spiced oak, dried fruit, citrus marmalade and peat. Magnificent!
Dewy grass and earthy springbank characters Taste like grape jam from behind, various sweet and sour fruits, spices, very complex and good balance
It’s quite nice, maybe a bit short of my expectations though. It’s got a great balance of savoury and sweet notes, and plenty of nice Madeira influence. The nose is rich and lovely, with that great balsamic note I always love to find in Springbank. The mouthfeel is light, but quite full, and the finish started to get quite long as I worked my way through the glass. Is it better than the 15? I’m not really sure. I do know that this whisky was like $300, which seems completely insane. Still, a very tasty whisky. That floor for Springbank bottlings is so high already that it’s disappointing to find one that’s just “good”.

I like this better than the 2020 Longrow 18 but not the July Springbank 18. The higher ABV is nice, but the 07.01.2020 run of the 18 is very good this year and I'm not usually a big port fan. I think the 17 yo Madeira is overrated a little bit due to newbies with cabin fever this year who are getting into Springbanks partly due to the hype. This dram is good but not great (for a Springbank). The July Springbank 18 at cask strength would have totally crushed it. On the other hand, this 17 madeira under consideration is kind of a different animal, so perhaps the comparison is less than apt. This dram is surprisingly industrial. While I really liked the industrial side of the Springbank Local Barley 16, this madeira is not as much of a pleaser in terms of its industrial side. A bit more rough and the complexity doesn't gel nearly so well. Still, it's a really nice bottle. I might have liked the Springbank 17 Sherrywood a tad better, but then again this bottle has not oxygenated enough to really make that comparison accurately yet. It takes the Sherrywood a long time to really shine after being opened.

Peach pit, hay, sealing wax, Lemon Pledge, wet wool jacket, Christmas cake, industrial scents like a machine shop. The only scents I'm not crazy about in this dram are the bitter tannins and the rancid wine (vinegar). I would have thought the madeira would be sweeter. It seems to have turned. For instance, the Madeira wood in the 1998 Longrow 12 was better, as was the Madeira wood that went into the aging of the 1998 Longrow 15 society release. |

Fairly long but a tad uneven with notes of mace, bitter oak, and more citrus. The madeira finally comes through at the very end and saves the day with some creamy, modeling putty (there's that industrial funk), and toffee. |

This I feel combines the different aspects of Springbank (subtle and powerful, all in one) exceptionally well. Extra kuddo’s to them for putting this in first fill Madeira casks for 3 years after already seeing the inside of bourbon and rum casks for a decade and a half. This could just as easily have been about the wood, the wood and nothing but the wood, but it didn’t. simply put: ‘This is what whisky is all about!’

Coffee and bitter chocolate at first, but it swiftly opens up and is followed by honey and floral – candy sweetness. Only then that maritime salinity and the Campbeltown funk signature appear (dirty, wet hay mixed with an industrial oily note), bringing that dirty (durrrty) touch along with some subtle hints of wood. Very inviting, very morish, interesting and complex. Everything you’d expect from a top class whisky, in fact. |

The wood is far more obvious on the arrival, developing into a well matured sensation of wood spice, dried plums and a (more subtle this time) earthy-funky note. Throw in some salinity and a very soft peat note on a viscous yet dry, medium full body to take it next level. Again: very layered and rich, but also subtle. Perhaps slightly less complex than on the nose, but bugger me: this is top notch whisky! |

Nice dram, but nothing special. It misses Springbank "funk". I gave to my friends blind tasting Springbank 15 Madeira 17 12 CS 57.1 and Madeira turn out for everyone on the last place.

sweet-sour-salty, exotic-fruity, pear liqueur, caramel, liquorice, voluminous, tingling, creamy, classic Springbank & Madeira, just as expected top quality, mineral, delicately smoky, bitter-sweet and meaty-fruity! Malaga ice cream! A bit earthy and dirty in the finish with a persistent, vinous sweetness.

Great Springbank - the madeira works well and gives a nice decadent sweetness with lots of xmas flavour. Would be in the 90s if it had a bit more balance and polish. Packs a nice punch. Love it

Aroma: Intense, rich. Lots of citrus fruits, spicy spices, minerality. They stood and breathed ... Canned peaches, strawberry jam, raspberries, leather goods. A sherry story in a duet with light industrial notes, carpentry, sea breeze, tobacco. Taste: Bright, enveloping, buttery. Citrus, peat smoke, red apple, peach, berry theme. Industrial notes, spicy spices, wood. Finish: Long-lasting, enveloping. Apricot pits, smoke, spices, some berries, wood. Conclusion: A wonderful mix of citrus fruits, berries, fruits with a light industrial note. ⚡88⚡
Berries like strawberries and blackberries, and dried apricot, sweet and sour, combined with punky mushrooms and dusty, just like Springbank. Rubber does exist but not in the bad way, cause with peat, it feels like a tropical flavor, such as mango. Sherry influence at the end, thus woody, dried grape and spice.
However welcoming it is to see a madeira cask matured whisky, it certainly makes a change from sherry matured, but they may be spent a bit too much time in the casks, personally. The nose is very enjoyable and I prefer this over the previous 15 year old rum cask edition.

A great springbank with nice aromas, which is a bit too "bulky" for me and unfortunately doesn't offer much in the finish. For the issue price just about reasonable, not even worth a thought for the ones called up. I feel better served with the 15.

Right at the beginning a very sweet, voluminous fruity nose comes towards you. A little alcohol resonates but hardly worth mentioning. The smell becomes even sweeter and more intense over time. Vineyard peaches, white grapes, nectarines, sweet red apples and something exotic that is difficult to grasp. No smoke - but degraded phenols. Very seldom have that so clearly in my nose. Nothing can be felt from the alcohol. |

The start is stronger than the 47.8% suggest. The distillate is very spicy and peppery on the tongue. Where is the sweetness and the fruit of the nose? .... Ahhhh. That comes after the second sip. But not nearly as pronounced as the nose. Pity! Very spicy again. Some smoke can be seen in the taste. In addition, an earthiness and minerality as you know it from Springbank. Sea air with a certain amount of sea salt comes at the very end. A bit more phenolic remains in the transition to the finish |

The bitterness stays on the palate for a long time. But for me it's the only thing that stays long. The vineyard peaches come through again very violently and clearly. But only for a brief moment. Then there is ... nothing left! Too bad! |
The part I love the most is on the nose, with a soft creamy, fruity but slightly smoky side, in which you can see a spicy part that, in the mouth, takes over on the fruity side. I find a continuous evolution in the glass, quite satisfying, especially if you chew the whisky a little. Discreetly long and spicy finish. Bottle opened for more than 3 months, at first it was sweeter and less complex.
Nose: Freshly mowed lawn, raisins, dried apricots, dried peaches, crackers, mint. Did not catch any smoky taste, lemon juice, berry juice, smell very complicated. Drink: Not high alcohol content, but the oily feel is very good, it is as smooth as it is about to melt in the mouth, better than smelling, citrus jam, honey, the changes in the mouth are very complex, smoky , Umami, long lasting rhyme. Overall: Although not so much like springbank in my impression. But it does not prevent it from becoming a good bottle of whisky. Cup: blended 1920 bottle: 30ml

Nose: Sweet and fresh at the beginning, then the malt becomes maritime with a little smoke. Now there is a clear fruit note with apricot and red apple. I also smell something dirty, which I cannot identify exactly but which is not annoying. Vanilla, delicate leather notes and a little oak follow. • Taste: In the mouth, the Springbank is a bit reserved and comes across as sweet and quite spicy. The first sip tingles on the tongue and has a mineral effect, then I find clear herbal aromas that remind me of a bitter green tea. Now the oak comes with all its spiciness, I finally taste a hint of tobacco and a pinch of salt. • Departure: Elegantly creamy, spicy and dry finish on the back.

I can imagine that it meets the taste of some whisky drinkers exactly. He can definitely do something - but doesn't really mean a booty scheme. I can understand the 90+ points of some of the notes here, but of course I have to judge according to my own taste and there are few situations where I would crave a sip of it, although I can respect that it is of high quality.

It's an exciting bottling. For me personally, however, not really a revelation. The issue price was already too high for me, but the current consumer price of over € 300 is very, very far beyond what this whisky is worth to me. The content can hardly justify this.

Absolutely overloaded at first and I don't particularly like it. After a while in the glass, he relaxes a bit and so do I. Now, on the whole, more mildly and slowly, individual aromas can be recognized differently for me. Forest fruits and caramel. Pastry by adding a few drops of water in the second round. |

Excessive ginger heat for me, without water too much too hot. I am amazed at this sharpness at less than 50% alcohol by volume. With a few drops of water it becomes more pleasant, wine comes to the fore. The caramel looks slightly burnt to me, I don't like that. On the other hand, there are beautiful notes of forest fruits such as currants, blackberries and blueberries. |

Vinous and musty, but creamy, sour sweetness. The forest fruits are slowly fading away. Overall rather long with a nice, mild smoky note. Good, but accompanied by an inappropriately bitter note. |
Slightly sour, peach, springbank dirty. Good balance of sour and peat. Long rounded peach finish.
Due to the unique taste of Madeira cask, it is characterized by a heavy and juicy Springbank-like light finish that combines sweetness and saltiness. Personally, this is a wonderful bottle that combines the unique taste of Madeira Cask with the goodness of Springbank.
