0483-CAIESTEAL CHAMUIS BOURBON BARRELLED BLENDED MALT HEAVILY PEATED SCOYCH WHISKEY (MOSSBURN) 46% ... Some time ago, I had the pleasure of experiencing its older sister (because whisky is a WOMAN) or older brother (because Mossburn is a HE), namely 0431 BL-Caisteal Chamuis 12-Yo Sherry Barrelled (Mossburn). Well, this version of the US doesn't even come close to the 12-Yo. It's simple, seemingly light, somewhat smoky (on the nose), and you can feel the young distillate laced with Islay liquid? Its medicinal character would suggest Laphroaig, or maybe not. The taste isn't interesting; the bitter medicinal peat completely distorts my perception of flavors. Furthermore, the bitterness and the considerable woodiness make it taste like a cheap, hastily mixed blend. I don't like it. I love all things smoke and peat, but I wouldn't count CAIESTEAL CHAMUIS BOURBON BARRELLED BLENDED MALT among my favorites. This is just my opinion, and of course, you don't have to agree. For the same price, you can get other, more complex blended malts from the peated variety. The potential is there, but it's all "taken out of the oven" too early.

Caisteal Chamuis Island, Blended Malt, 46% alc. Maturation: Virgin Oak, Oloroso sherry casks, bourbon casks. Nose: Peat fire and seaweed with pleasant sweetness and a slight smell of the farm. Sourdough, lemon drops and ash, some smoked fish. I can also find a sweet vanilla note. Palate: A creamy mouthfeel, the taste is carried by strong peat smoke. Again, some sourdough, perhaps rye bread. Plus sea salt, vanilla and lemon zest. Finish: Long and warming, continuing the previous impressions in a relaxed manner. Peat smoke, ash, the smell of the ocean, vanilla cream with a splash of lemon juice. Conclusion: A perfect blended malt, lots of smoke, very finely balanced. 85/100 points (2024)

Very positive surprise. Clear taste of peat with mossy/grassy notes. For the price, it's a really good whisky.

Nose is yeasty, malty, lots of lemon and underlying peat. Peat is more up front on the palate, with sea salt, vanilla and lingering white pepper finish.

The release is named after the ancient 13th-century castle Caisteal Chamuis (known as Knock Castle), the ruins of which are located on the Isle of Skye. The name hints to us that spirits from the Torabhaig distillery, which is located on the island and owned by the bottler company Mossburn Distillers, are the basis of the composition. The blend consists of malt spirits from various island distilleries in the Orkney archipelago. The whiskey was initially matured in refilled bourbon casks, then further matured in first fill bourbon casks. Nose: the aroma is young, pungent, fresh, sweet and sour, smoked.
