Quite OK but a bit disappointing with regards to my expectations...

Quick hit review. Some call it hype, but I would argue that it is consensus: people don't queue up without reason. A classic Springbank nose awaits, think mineral peat smoke, orange zest and sea spray, mixed with guava, tobacco and savory notes. This single malt deserves time. Initially sweet and fruity, the palate evolves with spicy, briny and zesty flavors, while the peatiness is perfectly integrated. Citrus fruits, pears and fresh herbs accompany the prolonged finish. A wonderful Local Barley, I know you can't get it... but that's supply and demand. RATING: 4.4/5.0 stars ≙ 90 pts → SUPERB [-]

A Springbank that hits the nail on the head, there's really nothing to complain about.

A paradox in a bottle: based on the taste, it deserves to be supped as it's a dram that evolves in the glass and was clearly made by drinkers - yet the price on the secondary market means it's almost daft to open a bottle. I'd rather sup it whilst I'm still above ground rather than someone necking it at my wake. A decent dram.

The nose is quite unusual - it reminds me a little of a pair of sweaty trainers or perhaps a cheese sandwich - I suppose yeast would probably be the best descriptor. |

The mouthfeel is pleasant with a slight oiliness to it. In terms of taste there is some funk, a slight hint of smoke in the background and plenty of malt. There is a slight burn from the alcohol, but overall a well put together dram. |

The finish is quite long, although the dram seems to evaporate as it disappears from the glass almost as if by magic. |
When reviewing a Local Barley, one needs to blend out the ridiculous aftermarket prices of these bottles. It's a very tasty Springbank and certainly worth the RRP.

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2024/05/15/you-must-believe-in-spring-bank/ N: The richest densest nose [so far], all seemingly coming from the barley with next to no unwanted previous cask meddling. This is indeed a celebration of local barley and the spirit of – savoury, oily, a little ‘green’ note with a Bruichladdich-esque sour touch [without the lactic note], becoming sweeter later. T: Appearing less peated than the previous 10yo’s, we’ve more a dry charred lemon-sourness to taste with a savoury almost herbaceous unctuous barley-derived quality. Again, savoury, oily, and a touch green,… give it time and the profile evolves. Where the sweet & sour of the casks and spirit ignite is where the sweet spot lies. F: More burnt sticks than peat, that lemon sour comes through, this one remaining centred around the savoury aspect yet there’s a sour sweetness later. The age is enough to give a softening aspect to the whole event whilst maintaining a just-so fortitude. C: You just can’t argue with these wonderfully made and presented whiskies from the world’s best distillery. Another whisky true to form.

Glencraigs Farm Springbank Local Barley… to score bottles like this you either have to be in the business or get up very, very early. Once launched, they are sold out in the blink of an eye. And not much later you'll be paying an arm and a leg on the second-hand market. Fortunately, there is Care for Craft Spirits, which simply opens its bottle and offers it in a tasting. Hurrah! We taste last year's release. In this case it is Belgravia Barley from Glencraigs Farm, a farm where barley has been grown by the same family since 1904. It is located just 4 kilometers from the Springbank distillery. On the nose it immediately lives up to its cult status. First very fruity on mango and nectarines with a hint of unripe pineapple, followed by quite a few mineral notes such as jute bags, the earthen floor in many warehouses and a subtle hint of woodsmoke. For a moment I even think of the hairspray that grandma used back then. Wow, I'm just catapulted back 40 years in time! And in addition to quite a few sweet scents, there is also a nice salty edge to it. This is a complex malt from the start! Nice oiliness and even a bit waxy, but surprisingly spicy. Salty, especially. And smoky! The fruit takes a while to arrive, because the mineral and earthy notes demand a lot of the attention of your taste buds. Even some coffee grounds and lime juice. The peat is subtle, yet unmistakable. Only then do white and yellow fruit, both fresh and candied, follow. Man, man, man this is old school and absolutely amazing! The finish is long, smoky and mineral with a deathbed sprig of mint. Phenomenal stuff, so I get the hype. It's just a shame that I can't get a bottle of what is ultimately a 13-year-old malt. Thanks to Jeroen for the generous sample!

The thought immediately hits the nose: like many whiskies costing around 50 euros, nothing special and quite unspectacular. It has a very nice mouthfeel on the palate, but the aromas aren't anything that blows me away. I see this in the range of 50-75 euros. So nothing that has to drive you crazy. That's why the many >90 point ratings leave me speechless. Man, Springbank, you can count yourself lucky to be riding such a wave of hype. They snatch standard material like this out of your hands for well over 100 euros RRP (yes, even 200-300 euros in the usual suspect shops) and celebrate it in the >90 point range...

Buttered bread and hay, sunflower oil, honey candies. A fairly powerful creamy lemon, tempered by evanescent vanilla, some mineral notes, a pinch of salt, and a light, elegant smoke. Luscious yellow plums, ripe banana. Welcome floral hues. On the palate, it's once again quite lemony, but also beeswax, runny honey, green apples, fairly powerful spices, cumin, and cloves. Grainy, toasted cereals. It's all rather rustic. Nice, long finish with restrained explosiveness, charcoal, muddy, earthy notes, grape seeds, in-shell almonds, wild herbs. Marzipan. This one didn't seem as good to me as the others, a little less balanced on the nose, less tasty on the palate. On the other hand, the finish is very good. It has a mineral, evanescent and floral side that I liked. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2024/12/springbank-2010-local-barley-13-yo.html

A true gem, incredibly complex, old school and tasty for such a relatively young whisky. Sprinbank seems to be capable to blend to perfection time after time. Expect moderate, mineral earthy peat smoke, a green mentholated side, but also fresh fruit, boiled sweets, gentle spice and earthy notes.

Very intense, yet great nose. Full on Springbank mineral peat smoke, quite mentholated, but also with an earthy quality on liquorice root. There is even a bit of soot. Then, crisp green apple, lemon balm, underripe banana, slightly dusty, husky barley, and a drop of honey. |

Long and salivating. Increasingly spicy from the wood, but gently so. More on cinnamon and liquorice root than on ginger and pepper. Still, a lovely maltiness to this dram, along with cherry topping, fruit drenched in rum, dunnage floor, gentlye peat smoke. |

Fourth day of the Campbeltown Malts Festival, Springbank Open Day. What could be better than a real Campbeltown whisky. The hype surrounding the normal Springbank bottlings increases exponentially when it comes to the Local Barley bottlings. I have no idea how you would ever get hold of such a bottling unless you are the best friend of a local dealer and get the bottle for close to the RRP or pledge your kidney. The 2023 bottling consists of 60% ex-bourbon and 40% ex-sherry casks. Belgravia barley from Glencraigs Farm, which is located just north of Campbeltown, was used. If we really should discuss terroir in whisky - it doesn't get any better than in the Local Barley bottlings. The barley grows right near the distillery, is malted there and processed into whisky, which is also bottled on site. glen-efze.de
