Not really typical for a Talisker as it is a bit lacking the maritime notes but it is a very good one on its own.

WITH WATER Nose - Much more floral now with hints of cinnamon mixed in with the fruit. I am also getting faint notes of tobacco. Palate - Much smoother and more drinkable, slightly creamy om marshmallow but peat still there. Finish - Long I liked it but I think a little water is needed to tame it. I found this one packed a sting when neat.

Coastal smoke, lemon, stone fruits, pepper, herbs, quite complex, had I tasted it blind, I wouldn’t have guessed it was talisker

Old tasting notes with old score. Rated 96, as my no 1 best scotch. Tried it in 2017. I will only be giving the rating but not the exact notes. A new review will be put up when I open my bottle.

[September, 2017]  Does age matter?  Surely if we talk about underaged (immature) whisky that is so often sold these days as the warehouses are empty of older stuff.  But does a longer maturation really improve a dram further even after it got adult?  Not so sure, so I do this head-to-head of three great Talisker - aged 20-years (vintage 1982, WB id 122), 25-years (bottled 2006, WB id 123) and 35-years (vintage 1977, WB id 35066), all original bottlings by Diageo. And the result is quite interesting:  Overall I like the youngest 20-years old Talisker best closely followed by the 35-years old and with somewhat distance the 25-years old.  So coming back to my initial question:  Older does not necessarily mean better like this set of high quality Talisker proved.  Nevertheless all three are really great drams...
Нос 90 Colour is irrelevant as Diageo usually uses caramel to fix it - but for the records: The 20y is at old gold, the 25y is at old gold and the 35y is one shade paler at jonquiripe corn. The texture of the 20y shows a fat sticky ring at the top of the glass that very, very slowly transforms into fat sticky tears and extremely slow legs (great oiliness!), the 25y shows many small sticky tears first that slowly consolidate and form slow legs (another good oiliness) and the 35y shows early bigger tears and slightly faster legs as well as late fat sticky tears (not too bad either). The nose of the 20y offers a complex profile of grassy, herbal, spicy and slightly peaty aromas with hints of salt all nicely balanced. The 25y has a comparable profile with stronger herbal and less peaty aromas and is a little unbalanced compared to the 20y. The nosing profile of the 35y is again grassy-herbal and is much stronger than the other two with no peaty aromas at all (but again hints of salt and other spices). I like the 20y best followed by the 35y and the 25y.
Вкус 91 A truly multi-layered barley-sweet, peaty and herbal flavours profile is unveiled by the 20y that later adds spices, salt and hints of ripe fruits to the party, really delicious. The 25y shows more wooden and less peaty flavours than the 20y and no salt at all. The 35y owns a more complex flavours profile on the palate (of course) with sugary, herbal, spicy and hints of peaty aromas. It is nicely layered and one to investigate for hours (if you have enough time and whisky). On this dimension I prefer the 35y over the 20y followed by the 25y. Some water opens the nose of the 20y very nicely and adds significant more (sweeter) aromas, I like it that way better. But do not add too much as the dram turns flat quite quickly. The reduced 25y gets smoother both in the nose and on the palate but does not add many new aromas, again I like it better a little reduced. Adding some water reveils more aromas with the 35y both in the nose and on the palate (especially some delicious peaty flavours).
Финиш 92 The 20y instantly coats the whole of the mouth with a nice warming feeling and just minor peppery moments (despite 58,8% abv) - the great texture kept its promise. The 25y arrives less coating and somewhat hotter on the palate (56,9% abv) with no bitter or astringent moments either. The mouthfeel of the 35y is again less coating than the 20y and slightly bitter (tannins, no wonder after 35 years in the cask). The 20y owns a very long finish (what else, given the great texture) that sticks to the palate even minutes after I swallowed the dram. It nicely vanishes in waves and has no bitter nor drying nor astringent moments, just great! The finish of the 25y is significantly shorter with more sweeter and less herbal flavours than the taste and again no distracting feelings. The 35y has a longer finish than the 25y but shorter than the 20y that vanishes in waves again but shows some minor bitter wooden notes (that are not unpleasant at all). It adds some sweeter flavours too that are very welcomed.

N- Lots of dark fruit, ginger and young pickle mango. Distant smokes, flinty notes. P- Intensely sweet, woody and peppery spices. Mineral, herby with a touch of bitterness, whiff of leather. F- Medium-long, smooth. Oak dry with refine spicy at the tail with curious honey emerge. - Thanks whiskyCon — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur.

Not many of us can live to 35 years and keep such freshness. Very good balance, delicate, complementing the taste of smoke.

86-90 – Wow, really good one, need a bottle
Нос 91 If I have to describe it in one word, it's 'maritime', which is the most important word for a talisker. It's quite sharp and intense. Not round in any way, which is what I would have expected. Harbor, coast, lemon, fish.
Вкус 87 The alcohol is noticeable even though this is my 3 dram of the evening. If we ignore the price and age, phew... it's pretty good.
Финиш 90 The maritime comes out again. Oysters. Quite long.

Fantastically elegant Talisker, as is common with Tali in the OA, they are getting set and supple with age, but so also develop fine new spice notes, etc. and this is also here in perfection. The price is of course ridiculous.
Tom na Gruagaich 95 20 oct 2024 6:15 pm
What a piece of cake, especially the typical Talisker is really extremely well worked out here. At 35 years old, it still has power, but shows its age in all its breadth. A fantastic malt. Compared to the 25, it is certainly more mature in all aromas and therefore has a touch more points, but this is a whisky that you have to chew on, the 25 is more accessible without being noticeably less complex and in the now naturally absurd price structures, the 25 at cask strength is probably the more logical choice. But whatever, this Talisker 35 is simply a force to be reckoned with.
