My first Laga DE. Found it very different than the 16yo, but very pleasing, especially the long sweet finish.
Lacks a bit of punch but very nice integration of sherry with peat
нос 86 · вкус 87 · финиш 85
The nose is very varied, and the fruity influence of the sherrycask can be found here. In the taste, things en turn more into peat and snokiness, less varied though still very solid and good. Pretty powerful for a 43% Abv whisky.

Still some pepper, licorice, sweet smoke, bitter ashiness. Pretty long. Some saltiness. Some earthy and vegetal notes. Some cigar tobacco remains for a long time now. |
Again a great continuation of this expression. Not as sweet as its predecessor, which had much more red fruit from the sherry finish. This one tasted more integrated though, making it less obvious that this was 'just' a finish.
[December, 2015] Together with friends I emptied a bottle that I bought for 72 Euro in November, 2015. In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 90. I took no notes.

Lagavulin character and PX is simple, but great together.
https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2020/03/30/odds-ends-march-2020/ Last time I tried this I wrote ’Did I get out on the wrong side of the bed?’ [WLP:82 points]. From a long-kept sample from the same bottle, here goes take 2. N: Velvet-soft onion, a drop of white wine vinegar & onion vinegar, hints of french onion soup [with a dash of Sauternes], autumn leaves, hints of rose water, orange oil, matured spit-roast ham,… it goes on,… but I’ll leave the shopping list there. T&F: Very relaxed/easy, soft & salivating delivery with descriptors that include ash=tar, a nice gentle bitter sour, pleasing sweet/savoury cocoa and [more] sweet onion-y/ashy, dry-yet-salivating white wine sweetness. C: It’s good to be aware of when your radar is a little off. Contrary to my previous experience, this is a fine whisky. [Note to self: peated samples seem to keep better than non-peated – discuss].
I think the sample has actually lost a bit of taste over the last 3-4 years, but still very tasty, but maybe it was just harder for him because of all the barrel strengths that I had before ;-)

I've tried several decaf e-liquors, and this one is my least favorite so far. Instead of the sweet, full smokiness I'm expecting, I find herbal notes. Hmm... still 'good', but nothing 'wow'. 71-80 – Fine, like to drink by time

- a very good Islay Single Malt - significantly softer and rounder than the 16 J. - but unfortunately also lost some of its distinctive quality - with formerly 80€ it was not cheap but it was still okay, the quality is clearly there, but for today over 200€ it is clearly too expensive to drink, for the current version 2022 approx. 120€ are set => unfortunately here too extreme increase and at least 30€ too expensive
was one of the last whiskys in the tasting. I have noted down Black Forest cherry and a nice sherry aroma.

Campfire romance pure! Embers, smoke, ashes, bacon, everything is there. The peat is initially integrated harmoniously, but is completely submerged in the taste. Here a real campfire is burning. A Lagavulin is always a gourmet experience, with the Distillers Editions always on top. A great malt, I like it very much!

It's almost unbelievable how intense previous DE's were. Fat smoke, greasy, plus the PX sweetness, a long and fiery finish. Here it actually doesn't need more than the existing 43 vol% to transmit the aroma intensity. At the end there is a surprising strong scent of smoked bacon from the empty glass.

As the 12yo CS, I prefer the 2015 edition to 2014. Less diluted, more tasty.

A Lagavulin makes love with a PX barrel! Ashy-iodine smoke alternates constantly with overripe berries. The smoke changes to bacon smoked ham. Maritime. The fruit becomes intense and sweet over time. Orange comes along. Also some leather, tobacco and wood. Later, cherries and plums come through again. Sun dried seaweed on the beach in salty air. Great. Set. Balanced. |

Quite different to other DEs from Lagavulin. The smoke is dominant and the sherry comes along after a few seconds. Therefore the Lagavulin character is very dominant but fair enough to release the sherry after a while. And of course this is the berry one. Very enjoyable. Concerning price/performance ratio: 8/10 (2015)

It's a little weak, but don't be too harsh on it, you can have another sip or a glass right away. Of course, in detail, I think its final rhyme is still quite good, iodophor, bandage, sea water, mixed with this concentrated honey syrup water, the layer is a little simple, but the moment you swallow it, it is very powerful Hit the taste buds in the mouth |

Are there any bad Lagavulin bottlings ?! This one is definitely not, but personally the sweetness is a bit too dominant and leaves the typical complexity of this distillery too little space. But this is "complaining at a high level".

Unfortunately, I have not had a Laga 16 in my glass for a very long time, or my bottle has been empty for some time, hence quite unbiased notes. Nose: Thick smoky, lithe nose, herbal tea, some iodine, medicine cabinet, wild honey, sage-sweet, sour cherry jam, raspberries. A nose where you just relax, so balanced, so tuned without being boring. Smoked bacon, Ahorse syrup, chocolate, caramel, a bit of peppermint, just great. After a while, a decent sweet tar flavor develops, which does not bother me any further. Taste: Oily mouthfeel, there is no burning, swallowing, the smoke, the chocolate, the strong herbs, pine needles, roasted aromas, oranges, baked apple, sherry sweetness, neat oak, light bitterness, hazelnut. Departure: cold campfire smoke, burnt fruit, oak, strong spice, it is becoming increasingly dry. Cocoa holds on, the cherry jam comes again, roasted aromas, dark chocolate. I can understand many opinions about this malt, it could be a bit stronger, with more% I think it would be a lot better. Since the taste is a little bit of the bums, then he would probably be 90+ for me. I put him on the same level as one of my favorite malts the Talisker DE in the reasonably comparable price region.
This is one of my all time favourite expressions and it is great fun to follow its development over the years. I found the previous (1998/2014) release to be sweeter, but slightly lacking in body, compared to previous releases (score of 89). This new edition feels like a nudge back in the right direction, with a better integration of the sherry and sweet-peat Lagavulin spirit. Beautifully rich nose, with the peat smoke and rich fruits in perfect balance. More darker, stewed fruits than the previous edition, with the wall of soft peat smoke underlying it all. The ashy peat comes through much more strongly on the palate (closer to the 16yo), but the rich sherry notes come back through for the finish, again resulting in a perfect balance of the fruit and smoke. Slightly fuller body than the previous edition too. Again...I only wish that they bottled this at a slightly higher strength. Great stuff...back on top form. Very good price:quality ratio.
It doesn't look like a reduced alcohol wine at all, old DE & Lagavulin, double buff, full-bodied, full-bodied. Good to drink, one glass is not enough????

Lagavulin Distiller's Edition PX Finish 1999 (bottled 2015). Consumed July 2018 at home. Aroma is rounded honey, cream sherry, light smoked ham, chorizo, booze and olives. Body is rounded and oily smooth. Taste is more booze-forward than usual Lag, rounded sweetness, less smoke phenols, quite tangy sweet and salty, sweet and sour sauce, touch plasticky. The sherry is nice but it actually dampens some of the balance in the spirit. Still an excellent whisky in its own right. If this were bottled by a different distillery and I wasn't comparing it to other Lagavulin bottlings, I would be singing its praises. 3.7/88

Smoother and even more balanced than the 2014 version. I liked it a tiny bit more. Fabulous.
That was a lovely one, but there are cons. My bottle is almost finished now and the sweet spot for this bottle is somewhere around 40-50% fill level IMO. The first few drams were a little tough and almost made me regret my decision to buy this. The fruitiness was somehow covered up in the beginning and I cringed at the thought of getting roughly two standard 16 year olds for the same amount of money.. But then there was improvement! I'm really glad it changed in a positive way and I'm a little sad it's almost gone now. It's soft as velvet and drinks way too easy (to no surprise, 43% is on the low side). I really wish they would bottle this at a minimum of 46% without colouring/filtering though. Oh and while we're at it, isn't it a little over the top to charge €30-40 extra for a PX finish? This particularly keeps me from buying another bottle and I think many others share the same thought. Being owned by Diageo, we won't see any changes anytime soon unfortunately.

Wow, what a whisky! The already fabulous character of the 16-year-old bottling unites with fruity, sweet sherry tones. None of the facets covers the other, it creates a smoky-sweet Gesamtkunstwerk. Horst Lüning once described this as "the sweet medicine of the sea" - in my opinion it is doing quite well. I always want and will have a bottle of it in my bar - for the dark hours late at night, in which alone I let my thoughts wander into the distance.

First drink after i opened the bottle, not impressed. None of my 2 friends were either. Mostly sigar smoke and tobacco, as we expect from Lagavulin. But not much else. Some sweetness, but still kind of flat and lacking in flavor to balance the smoke out. Very straight forward and incomplex dram. Not what i expect from a "Distiller's edition". Not even close to the way better and cheaper regular 16yo.Maybe it needs some air, will re-rate later.

Smoky, salty, and slightly overripe bananas. The smoke comes after the sweetness. Some ash in the middle, and some sweet orange and cream hidden underneath. The tail is some warmer spices such as cinnamon and ginger. The peat is not very heavy, and it is more like disinfectant and some kind of medicine. The openness is good, the pleasure is also good, and the alcohol control is also good. This one has better layering. |

The sweetness is much more restrained at first, with wood and smoke at the beginning, and the disinfectant is also quite dominant, followed by some relatively "shrunken" (which can be understood as not so "juicy") citrus fruits, and quickly turns to nuts and cream at the end. The spice in the aroma is more of a background. There is a little bitterness at the bottom, but it is acceptable. The body is a little worse, a little watery, and the alcohol control is average |
