В аромате узнаваемый Ben Nevis в хересном обличье: апельсин и цитрусовая цедра, красные и лесные ягоды, тёмный шоколад, орехи, мёд, воск и обилие трав, при этом херес держится сдержанно и чисто, без насыщенной хересной бомбы. Опытные отмечали необычную металлическую ноту холодной меди и кисло-бальзамический профиль (бальзамический уксус, соевый соус, лакрица). Во вкусе — маслянистое, тягучее тело, кисло-сладкие ягоды, сушёные фрукты, тёмный шоколад, лакрица и пряная дубовая острота при хорошем балансе, хотя сложность для столь солидного возраста многие называют умеренной. В послевкусии повторяются древесина, пряности, лёгкая горчинка грецкого ореха и сухость.
Расхождение в оценках выражено: опытные держатся в диапазоне 87–89 и последовательно критикуют качество самого спирта — горячеватую атаку, слабую, водянистую текстуру и короткое, недостаточно насыщенное послевкусие (высказана догадка о поспешной дистилляции или новом перегонном аппарате), рекомендуя разбавление примерно до 46%. Рядовые ревьюеры настроены щедрее — множество оценок 89–94, упор на зрелость, сливочность и питкость, — но и среди них звучат претензии к избыточной, местами горькой и почти вяжущей древесине, нехватке фруктов во вкусе и слабому финалу; крайняя негативная оценка 76 указывает на переизбыток танинов вплоть до серного оттенка. [May, 2022] A quick review of a sample... ...which is some kind of a strange Ben Nevis as it shows unusual metallic notes I never had before with a Ben Nevis. Both nose and taste are pretty fine but the spirit's quality (mouthfeel/finish) is a little weak, maybe this was from one of the first runs of a newly installed (replaced) still - who knows?
| Нос | 89 | The colour is deep copper and the nose offers a slightly metallic (cold copper) profile which is rather unusual and interesting and which often can be found with Port Ellen bottlings (or after new stills were installed at any distillery site). The sherry is subtle and shy and flawless - I like it but sherry monster lovers might be disappointed, I guess. The malt adds fruits and autumn floral notes, the wood is spicy. |

After a round of Dream of Scotlands I'm looking forward to a dram which I'm hoping will be more whisky. And this one definitely offers that. Overall a very nice pleasure whisky with a clean profile that has some weaknesses in the finish and mouthfeel.

Very successful, if perhaps a bit unusual Ben Nevis, whose 25-year maturity is really noticeable, which is by no means always the case. Pleasant mouthfeel - simply delicious with fine notes of honey, a certain waxiness, light fruit and nutty chocolate. Class! Fairly priced at EUR 195 at the Whisky Fair in Limburg 2022.

Great, round sherry malt. So sweet and delicious. Nose and palate are great! Doesn't seem overly complex for its 25 years, which I might have expected differently. But maybe I also lack the experience with such old malts. which are not exactly affordable these days.

Oranges, cloves, bitter dark chocolate, strong menthol, toffee, meringue, wood polish. The sherry cask dominates, with heavy wood spice disturbing the overall balance, but the Ben Nevis distillate character manages to come through enough to make this an enjoyable (but challenging) dram.

It is not particularly complex in terms of the variety of aromas itself, but has a good range and nice depth within the aromas described. Scores especially in the key. Benefits from water and time if you prefer more herbs than syrupy fruit flavors. 90 to 91/100.

Conclusion: Another very good Ben Nevis from the '96 vintage. A real blast on the nose: It has everything I expect from a Ben Nevis, with the cask and distillate complementing each other well. The palate lacks some fruit, and the wood is unfortunately quite present: A little less wood would have been fine for me. The bottom line: A good tipple worth trying, but not a must-have.

Yes, just what I expected from a good Ben Nevis. A bit hidden and indecisive on the nose, but powerful on the palate and on the finish. I can only recommend this one to everyone. Unfortunately, a bit expensive. I paid 275.-€. But thankfully it's worth every single cent.
