very nice, benefits from the higher ABV

Young, strong, smoky. Not comparable to the 16yo or the DE, which have much more sherry influence. But the 12yo is still successful and fun.

Sweet smoky, wet tar. Salt, pepper and iodine give a fresh sea flavor. The alcohol stings a bit in the nose.

Very smoky beginning, which moves in waves over the tongue. Yeast cookies are added, next to an apple-fruity sweetness. Some wood.

Long and dry, at the end of a just smoldering campfire with fine smoke.

Very nice one, good combination of smoke and sweetness, with a remarkably smoother finish than body. Did this one H2H with the 2018 variant, this 2018 being stronger in alcohol in the nose, and fruitier. Also fruitier in taste, just a little lighter and smooth and attractive. Both are great whisky’s by the way.

Some smoke, sweet, caramel, fake leather, some earthy notes, autumn forest. Salty as well, and the smell of a motorboat at sea.

Sal ammoniac and licorice. Lots of pepper, strong and full-bodied. Bonfiresmoke, ash. Also some sweet, peach and honey.

Remarkably softer and smoother now, less pepper, some smoke and sweet notes remain, pretty long finish.

It's good, but definitely not among my favourite batches of this expression. Just as the previous batch, it has a strong salty note that goes at the expense of the fruity notes.

N: Colin Dunn describes this one as 'Lagavulin undressed'. For me it's supercharged. T: Water management is key. To say it’s racey, zingy, and punchy is an understatement. I brought it down to 50/50. It's peaty power is awesome. More arresting then Octomore. F: Smoky, clean, spirit. Massive finish. C: it's a brute that appears to have its own agenda. So engaging that it made me chuckle. Super stuff, but can the Feis Ile better it? WB Scores a B+ [89] Further reading: WF92

For all my love for a wine in sherry casks, I have to say that this Lagavulin really gets me, precisely because it brings out the best in ex-bourbon casks, great whisky

Michelangelo Did you know that until 1987 the Lagavulin 12 was actually their standard bottling? Some thirty years ago the 16 Year Old came in its stead and should be present in every bar. This is truly the quintessential Lagavulin, no doubt. But still the 12 Year Old is released on a yearly basis as Special Release at cask strength. I have tried two of those before, but today I have the pleasure of trying the 2014 release. It was bottled at 54,4% ABV. Smoky toffee! That is the nose in a nutshell. Creamy, sweet on toffee and vanilla, immediately followed by a grand smokiness of sweet peat, some stable scents and a good pinch of kitchen salt. Young apples kick in. Liquorice. Wet wood. Butane gas. Complex and very outspoken. I love it already. What a body! On the palate it is nicely balanced between sweet and salt. Butter and toffee on the left of me, brackish sea water on the right, stuck in the middle with lemon juice and a drop of olive oil. Nice smokiness. Some oak and pepper join in. Most lovely indeed. The finish lingers very long, warm and smoky with again a fierce fight between sweet and salt. Ah, this Lagavulin has a grand chiseled body. Michelangelo would be jealous.
