Quite OK but surely not my preferred Laga profile

Dried fruits, chocolate, smoke, oak, tobacco, raisins, honey, bit of coffee, quite a simple sherried profile, easy everyday whisky

To access as completely without hesitation as before, you can no longer with the Distillers Edition. The nose is still promising, but the promise is not honored on the tongue and certainly not on the finish. Compared to its predecessors, the 2000er DE is pale and frankly a bit arbitrary. Lagavulin could do that better.

In the nose quite some fruitiness, in taste it is much more into peatiness. Quite powerful for only 43% Abv, nice and pleasant dram.

A decent dram with a decent taste. The price ain't silly - decent amount of flavour for your money.

[May, 2017]  I had this dram during the Manager's Masterclass tasting at the Feis Ile.As usual this is a nice and easy-to-sip Islay dram with a bold profile.  The yearly batches vary a little but still all are on a high quality level.  This dram proves:  Excellent whisky need not to be very expensive!

Arbroath Smokies I have already had the pleasure of tasting quite a few expressions of the Lagavulin Distillers Edition – the annual, festive, double-matured release – namely 1981, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005… So it was been a while anyway. And my buddy Benoit had an open bottle of the DE 2000, bottled in 2016. I would like to add that to my list, making it the tenth edition of this PX-matured Lagavulin that I have already had the pleasure of tasting. Excellent nose, as expected. Overripe banana, toffee, stockfish, smoked ham, plasticine, leather, olive oil, rotten wood, sea breeze and raisins. Arbroath Smokies squared. Delicious! On the tongue it is nice and oily and immediately a lot sweeter than the nose suggested, the peat becomes a touch bitter and a beautiful, surprisingly subtle smokiness develops. Nice and spicy, without being spicy. Chewing tobacco, leather and dark chocolate appear. Turkish coffee, roast beef, and nice sweet notes of sherry that do not dominate. Hint of anise Very tasty. The aftertaste is particularly good! Long, warm, smoky and sweet with a nice, albeit dry, deathbed pepper. These Distillers Editions from Lagavulin never, ever disappoint. Except at the cash register. Meanwhile, about 125 EUR. Thanks, Benoit!

Quite good, but for me one of the weaker bottlings of the DE's. 81-85 – Wow, really good one

2016 DE to see the difference !! On the nose, it's sweet and intense on soaked wood, sherry and creamy peat, refined the color is also darker. In the mouth, it is very pleasant, on this peat associated with sherry impregnated one in the other. the fruits are cooked, macerated, on the candied orange peels, a little moldy wood, a little nut, the characteristic smoky is sweet, there is a little seaweed, a little dry smoke too, the spices are sweet, amplifying just the flavors, that's especially a relative softness with the 16 "basic" that I like too! the finish is quite long, on the same scents, a little more intense woody and the softness of wood and cold ashes at the bottom of the glass!

Itasted it compared with his old brother DE 1991 and it is indeed few steps behind. Solid dram but smell and taste weak, as it is too much w  watered down.

Whiskyfun: Lagavulin 2000/2016 'Distillers Edition' (43%, OB, lgv 4/505) One of the few bottlings that I should hate (finishing some Lagavulin?) and that I usually like a lot. Even if, in my opinion, the tremendous quality of the first one, that 1979, isn’t totally here anymore. But the DEs are still singing loud… Colour: dark gold. Nose: bwah bwah bwah (did you take your potion S.?) Did anyone ever tried to use pencil shavings for smoking ‘stuff’? Cedar wood, burning fir wood, Vicks VapoRub, huge piles of dried kelp, and prunes. And dried mushrooms. And black olive brine. And bitter oranges. My it wouldn’t keep quiet! Did they find the old recipe again, perhaps in an old drawer? Mouth: well, perhaps not quite, it’s a tad too oak-forward for me. Caramelised wood and caraway liqueur, burnt honey sauce, rum… The whole’s really thick and even heavy, we’ve lost a part of the complexity that was obvious in the nose. Chocolate and salt, and a chipsy feeling, as we say in wine (that would be oak chips). Finish: long, a little fat, and even a little liqueury. That must be the PX – oh, forgot to say that it was finished in PX. PX kills many whiskies if you ask me; but of course this one isn’t quite dead. And it doesn’t even smell funny. Comments: I completely adored the nose, while I was a little less fond of the palate. Perhaps isn’t it ‘Lagavulin’ enough for me? Did it change? Did I change? We’ll see what happens next year… SGP:556 - 83 points.

Sadly enough, flavour-wise the 2000/2016 version is only a slim shadow of the previously glorious distillers editions. Given the price, I would rather stick with the 16yo or also the 8yo. So the rather weak, thin and even bitter 2000/2016 edition does not yield more than 84 points in my book of single malts.

Another beautiful Lagavulin standard at a fair price. I had a 4cl sample and could play with water. The 4cl again confirmed my opinion that the Lagavulins, which are released as standard and under 100 euros, are all worth their money. This reminds me a bit of Glenfarclas for another type of malt that also has very clean and great malts for cheap money.

Rather disappointing and unfortunately from lgv.4 / 502 decidedly lost in depth and complexity. The Sherrynachreifung not harmonious and almost forced. Light spicy dried fruit, but as I said everything very "light". I feel the price increase is not justified here qualitatively. Let's hope that with the coming version again draws a little more width!

87.00 Buttery, tart citrus, sea, salt, iodine, charred wood, cocoa powder, cinnamon spices, cured meat, black tea, bitter caramel, herbs, choking smoke, lots of smoked paprika (spice).

Tasty, seems older due to the herbal note, the smoke is well integrated and very much in the background, sherry always comes through. Basically a good whisky, but as the fill level decreases it becomes a bit boring and a few aromas start to get annoying

Since there are so many different batches and this whisky is not part of my construction sites anyway, I'll make it brief here. Because I always have the same problem with such bottles. But I have the necessary respect for it.

take the edges off the normal 16yo add some fine sherry influence and if you like that combination you have just a wonderful dram with the distillers edition. Smoke, peat, some ham, salt, sea, dark sherry, sweetness, some orange, just wonderful. Don't change anything
