В аромате — насыщенный фенольный дым с йодом, водорослями, морской солью и медицинскими тонами (камфора, бинт, скипидар), а за ними светлая кисло-сладкая фруктовость: крыжовник, манго, маракуйя, виноград, апельсиновая цедра, трубочный табак и ваниль. Вкус плотный, маслянистый и дымный, с тропическими фруктами, лакрицей, чёрным перцем, эспрессо и копчёными оттенками; спирт у большинства хорошо интегрирован, крепость воспринимается уместной без разбавления. Послевкусие долгое, сухое, дымно-сладкое с цитрусом и пряным дубом, хотя нередко отмечают ощутимую молодость дистиллята. Опытные ревьюеры оценивают образец заметно выше (регулярно 88–91), хваля сочетание фруктовой сладости и торфяного дыма и его бесконечный дымный аромат; один из лучших отзывов — именно за яркий, «дикий» нос, угаданный вслепую как эксперимент с мадерой. Основное расхождение и главная критика связаны с мадерной выдержкой: часть считает её слишком доминирующей или чуждой Laphroaig, предпочитая классические бурбонные и хересные бочки, отмечают несбалансированность, «сконструированность» и слабость относительно релиза 2014 года. Оценки в целом согласованы и держатся в диапазоне 81–94, концентрируясь около 86–88.

This is a wonderful whisky. An eternally long smoky nose. This great combination of strong peat smoke on the one hand and fruit notes on the other hand on the tongue. The alcohol perfectly integrated. Great.

[June, 2016]  I had this dram during a "Feis Ile 2016" tasting at Bonn. In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 85.  My notes state it demands significant time to breathe before opening up.

For me instead of ex-bourbon notes comes out like Madeira. But I don't think that the finish was "wrong", but rather too dominant in the base distillate. Springbank and Balvenie Madeira finishes was expressive for me ... but of course I'm enjoyed this too.

‘Blind Islay fury’ was a blind tasting organised by Whiskylounge. We started here: WB N: An initial hit of melted vanilla ice-cream with a topping of tutti-fruity sauce & skittles followed by a particular smokiness - Madeira, PX? I also detect lentil [gram] flour, smoked candy=chocolate, fruity plasticine, fruity erasers, rehydrated kale, yeast flakes, figs and large char notes. What a nose! T:  Big on meats and heavy charred vegetal smoke. Is this a Bruichladdich experiment, Octomore territory perhaps? F: Eventually moves on to conclude with light minerals and a long sustained vegetal-sweet smokiness. C: Scoring wise i have to be careful here, the weird and wacky ones often leave a good first impression before the novelty wears thin. but i have to be careful here [i got caught out with that bizarre BenRiach Heredotus peated PX number before WB]. I’m not really sure about it overall, but what a nose. I'll go with this being a wacky Bruichladdich experiment or maybe a Madeira finished Laphroaig. On to number 6 WB. Scores a B[-]

Not super complex, but a really great whisky to enjoy. For my personal taste the perfect combination of fruity sweetness and smoke.

COLOUR: rosé / amber (without coloring !) - a very good special single malt - great special bottling, really successful - but at the current prices much too expensive

A nice dram which is fully worth its release price (85€) but also not much more! I love Madeira finishes and this one is a good try of Laphroaig but I like the standard Bourbon or Sherry Casks more.

I miss the enriching effect of the finish. I find it most exciting undiluted because that's when it has the most power. However, not a dram that undergoes development over time; so more of a sideline. For the full review go here: https://halbendrinks.de/2022/05/22/cairdeas/

Whisky is not bad, but compared to the 2014 release, it is significantly weaker, simpler, and the nose did not shine in 2014, but it is completely absent here, one can say.

Guter Laphroaig!
Нос 88 Wet, greasy cardboard, strong fruit soup with sea water.
Вкус 89 Powerful and smoky, yet pleasant. The lovely sweetness of the Madeira comes out at the end.
Финиш 86 You can definitely feel the youth, but it remains pleasant.

Нос 83 Dominant alcohol, only after prolonged aeration does the typical phenolic smoke come to the fore, sawdust and wood varnish, some orange, red currant
Вкус 84 Sugary sweetness with iodized smoke, still alcoholic, strawberry and raspberry
Финиш 84 relatively long with lots of smoke

Very good Laphroaig, very medicinal, with its own DNA. We don't really smell the barrel though.
Нос 88 A nose of licorice, camphor, medicinal, turpentine. Orange peel, tangerine, black and white pepper, and a large dose of iodine. It's salty, peaty and ashy.
Вкус 90 In the mouth, the medicinal is also at the forefront. Turpentine, camphor, bandage. It's the hospital corridor. We have ash, peat, black pepper. Still salty, we also have a little bacon and smoked bacon.
Финиш 86 Finishes on ash, camphor, black pepper. It's peaty and smoky, but less complex than the palate.

Great bottling with a grandiose drinking strength and an exceptionally orange colour. Pipe tobacco and gooseberries are my signature flavors, alongside the Laphroaig-typical powerful smoke.
Нос 89 Powerful phenolic smoke with plenty of iodine, gauze, seaweed and sea spray. Behind this lies a wonderfully light, sweet and sour fruitiness. Ripe gooseberries, mango, passion fruit, light grapes, moisturizing cream, vanilla, delicate oak spice, pipe tobacco. The alcohol is wonderfully integrated.
Вкус 89 Smoky, strong, oily. Red Pepper, Gooseberries, Cranberries, Pipe Tobacco, Vanilla, Grapefruit, Espresso. The drinking strength is just right and no dilution is necessary.
Финиш 88 Medium finish. Dusty, dry, smoky. Oak spice, espresso, moist tobacco and vanillin.

A wonderful and unusual Laphroaig. The sweetness and the peat harmonize perfectly. This Cairdeas goes in my opinion already in the direction of Octomore. After the 2013er the best Cairdeas for me!
