Unlike his brother from the sherry cask, which appeared at the same time, he knows how to flatter himself on the tongue and leave a dazzling impression there. The fact that the exit is then a bit tight is easily forgiven.

First of all: the color (rusty brown) shows its cask origin very nicely. Raspberry chewing gum, Fritt chewing strips, fruit drops, cherries: the sweetness may seem artificial, but it is nevertheless very digestible and pleasant on the nose. Muff and mustiness can often be found at Kilkerran, but the maturation in Port Cask seems to completely cover this up. Milk coffee, espresso beans, caramel, block malt, nougat chocolate, almonds. |

Amazingly soft attack, very creamy and mouth-filling. The tongue is immediately occupied by cherries, grapes, blueberries and plums, which then quickly have to make way for dry wood, cocoa and dark chocolate. There is a hint of menthol, initially, because it disappears again after a while. It's amazing how quickly the initial creaminess disappears without losing its softness. |

Obviously completely exhausted on the tongue, it says goodbye faster than necessary, but without giving up shining again with delicious fruit and chocolate notes. |
Even though it's obviously quite different from the sherry version released simultaneously, that maltiness is a prominent common characteristic that I haven't experienced in earlier batches.

A beautiful, slightly reddish colour. The aroma is initially characterized by a subtle smoky note, not the typical Islay ashtray smoke, more of a spicy, greasy smoke. In between always peaks of sweetness, who flashed bashfully through. Is this the port? I guess… Extremely strong! But it remains very aromatic. Yes, he looks young and impetuous, but very expressive. I feel something of grass and meadow, tart, spicy, woody. I associate wild berries, old, smoky wood. He can do anything!

Ok, but not great. My suspicions are confirmed; port matured whisky just rarely works for me. This is too spicy and resembling a cheap red wine with a significant amount of drying sourness. If I want to experience these types of flavours I'll keep it to the wine or port itself. Glad I didn't take the effort of hunting down an entire bottle.

Edit 6/27/23 compared to the August 22 rating of 82-76-76 Unlike the sister batch 6 "Sherry", this Kilkerran was not able to improve even after prolonged oxidation. The barrel is too dominant, the tart European oak and the over-seasoned overall impression. The nose and the last part of the exit are okay, but there is a lot of shadow in between. Disappointing and another point deduction.

S 7.5 Kilkerran seems to work well with Port maturation. Especially their port casks are all used ones from Cadenhead if my memory serves right, so the jammy/syrupy notes are mostly stripped away before Kilkerran makes its way in. 81-85 - Nice, I can drink more of this

As the saying goes: Other mothers also have beautiful daughters - and yet I was also willing to pay €140 for a bottle (for a bottle sharing) and I'm crazy about Campbeltown bottlings in 2022. In the last few years we have never been disappointed. The port barrel is unmistakable on the nose, slightly fermented dark fruits, here and there I imagine a slight cheesy-sour note. No sulphur. Apple compote, strawberry jam. Very very fruity. Plus grain notes. Light, fruity and fresh. Strong in the mouth but not pungent, maybe not perfectly integrated with the alcohol but absolutely drinkable. Wonderful symbiosis of fruitiness, freshness, an earthy dirtiness and the wonderful lightness of the Kilkerrand distillate. Slightly spicy tingling on the palate on the finish, a bit metallic and a lot of grandma's strawberry jam. I like it very much again, a wonderful drinking whisky for balmy summer evenings. 70€? At any time! But for the current prices I will probably do without in the future. 87 points

Kilkerran 8 years Port Cask Matured Batch 7, 57.9% alc. Original bottling (2022). Matured in port wine casks Nose: Moss, damp forest floor and a pleasant smoke. Then a strong sweetness emerges, including currants, blackberry jam and a little liquorice. Then it turns into sweetened peppermint tea. Palate: Intense and tasty, the smoke is now much stronger. At the same time, the Kilkerran also retains its sweetness. Here again the redcurrants, but also gooseberries and salmiak, a little pepper, pipe tobacco and cocoa powder. Finish: Medium to long, mountain pine, fir green, menthol and sweet milky coffee. Conclusion: Kilkerran and port wine casks simply go very well together. 88/100 points (2024)

Beautiful, clean (no sulfur) Campbeltown port matured whisky. Opens up nicely in the glass and with the addition of a few drops of water. Highly recommended, of course getting a bottle is the tricky part - I was able to get a bottle for a very decent price (less than €60) from a retailer who wanted to make sure the bottles he had ended up with people who actually drank them; so I opened the bottle together with him. Unfortunately these type of retailers are few and far between these days.

Kilkerran 8 year old, port cask, 2022 release, 57.9%. 25ml sample Aug 2022. Bold orange brown. Aroma is mostly salted caramel, caramac bar, raspberry white chocolate, powdered mint. Body is moderately oily. Taste is pretty easy for the abv, some tangy underripe red berry, becoming resinous and waxy, finishing with breathy smoke, rusted metal, lingering tangy wine. The port cask and smoky spirit are discordant. Solid enough but the port cask is overdone in my book. Still, solid. 3.525/84 With a drop of water, the colour is more of a blush-pink-hued orange. The aroma is similar to how it was neat, but perhaps has more chocolate and black tea. Taste is waxy, spiced black tea, some rum, the breathy smoke opens up even more. Good. Solid, and better with a drop of water. 3.6/86

Sample courtey of a friend. Kilkerran was never my favourite malt - I find it too dirty, among many things - and this bottling unfortunately showed all the wrong things that I find unattractive. It's bitey, ashy, acrid, metallic, and most of all it's all over the place. Adding water and letting it breathe accentuate more of menthol cigarette and mushroom notes, which I found not really working in this case. The nose was surprisingly okay, but it was all downhill from that. Some will inevitably like this malt more than I did (hence the score), but I'm glad I don't have a whole bottle of it. I did not like the Sherry cask bottling that much although I have a bottle of that, but this scores much lower than that.
The smell is very smoky and ash-like, with some cheese and some strange preserved fruit flavors that I don't like (more like the smell of pickles). It is very sweet at first, but the alcohol is a bit strong. It has a strong consistency with a long aftertaste, simple and pure, and delicious.

The rather active port casks mask the raw youth of this full strength Kilkerran. Rather enjoyable for the extra layers that this brings, but all in all you miss the beauty of the Kilkerran spirit. In such a way, the output from the Glengyle distillery is much like the neighbours at Springbank: it withstands active casks quite well, but at a cost of loosing nuance.

A very special Kilkerran, fragrant, tasteful and light smoke with a clear influence of the port cask. Lasts tingly for a long time. Excellent in a word! And that for Euro 62.50. Okay, this little dram may not have that typical Kilkerran outspokenness, but I don't think that's a reason to undervalue it. Therefore a fair 89 points!
88/100. It doesn't seem as round and complex to me as the one from the bourbon barrel, but it's convincing. A completely different side of Kilkerran.
Definitely better than the kilkerran 8 from the Sherry cask with 58,8%. Better integration from the port cask, much cleaner nose and nicely sweet and harmonious in the mouth, though the finish is rather short. Benefits from a bit of water, I like this expression.

Too much alcohol noticeable. The pure alcoholic taste dominates. Absolutely too expensive for a schnaps taste.
Nose 88: the fresh walnut is bright, then come the almonds, caramel, vanilla, then the red fruits and finally the notes of rancio, cherries with the brandy of old ports. Evolved, clean and complex. Taste 87: powerful, tasty and creamy with spices, notes of red and black fruits and crushed cherries. Coats the mouth with softness and suavity then evolves towards drier notes of chocolate and wood without any astringency. Finish 87: long, balanced and sweet. Always nuts, chocolate and macerated cherries. Bright. Beautiful, complete and delicious whisky. Go for it!
not worth to purchase. This whisky would need another 8 years at least to loose its strong alcohol smell.

For some reason I was expecting a bit more peat. With that said, you get the smoke, the caramel, and a bit of sulfur on the nose. You definitely feel the heat going down but doesn't feel like a 57.1%. Picking up the sweet taste from port cask, as well as some nutty caramel. A few drops of water made it open up nicely and got a little bit of the waxy taste. Drank it side by side with SB10, and IMO, I preferred the SB10 over this.
Except for a little rawness and tannin, there are basically no obvious defects, and it is quite a good wine.
