Торфяной хайлендер в первом наливе хереса — тёплый дым, тёмные фрукты, шоколад. Опытные хвалят баланс дыма и хереса; главное расхождение — послевкусие, у части быстро гаснет в золу.

В аромате тёплый, слегка медицинский дым сочетается со сладостью хересных бочек: тёмные фрукты, красные ягоды, чернослив, кожа, табак, шоколад, марципан, кофе и лёгкая пряность, всё собрано и без спиртуозности при 48,1%. Во вкусе живой, но не резкий: копчёная сладость, тёмные фрукты, шоколад, гвоздика, мята, солодовая сладость и маслянисто-кремовая текстура; вода раскрывает сладость и приглушает дым. Послевкусие среднее-долгое, с сухой пряностью, дубом, золой и остаточными хересными нотами. Хвалят прежде всего сбалансированность дыма и хереса, за которую отвечает сочетание бочек из-под бурбона и хереса, и достойную цену. Опытные ревьюеры держатся высоко и ровно (в основном 83–89) и подчёркивают гармонию и удачный выбор бочки. Среди остальных разброс шире: часть считает это лучшим сбалансированным Ballechin, но повторяется претензия, что великолепный аромат не поддержан вкусом и особенно послевкусием — оно быстро уходит в пепельную сухость, мыльность и горчинку. Отдельные низкие оценки связаны с неприятием копчёно-ветчинного профиля и лёгкими нотами серы или молочной кислоты и картона. В целом мнения согласованны в описании профиля и расходятся в оценке финальной части и того, оправдывает ли она цену.

Today a ballechin from 2010 is waiting to be tasted. The whisky comes from the Small Batch Edition series by Signatory Vintage and was bottled exclusively for Kirsch Import at 48.1% vol. For ten years. The whisky in the glass is dark gold and has a medium viscosity. For me another very successful bottling from the Small Batch Edition. As before with the Edradour, Signatory & Kirsch have once again shown a good hand when choosing a barrel and put an exciting whisky in the bottle.
Нос 89 When you first smell it, a very pleasant and warm smoky note paired with the sweetness of the sherry barrels. On the second breath, the smoke becomes spicier, more like fresh fir green and almost even with a medicinal note. Together with the scent of sandalwood, red berries and a spicy sweetness, the ballechin presents itself very nicely on the nose. There is no alcohol and everything looks round and harmonious. The start was definitely a success!
Вкус 88 On the palate, the 48.1% vol. Are quite lively, but without being disturbing. The smoke is a little dirtier and the sweetness more elegant than expected from the nose. Sherry flavors, dark fruits, chocolate, cloves, mint and marzipan can be tasted. After adding a little water, the sweetness comes out more clearly, while the smoky aroma falls back. The dram becomes softer and fruity and it is definitely worth experimenting with adding water.
Финиш 87 The finish of Dar Ballechin is in the medium to long range. Of course, the smoky note is retained, but there is also a dry spicy note that is quite pleasant, especially towards the back. The mint has a brief invigorating effect before it is replaced by pleasant sherry notes.

Starts strong with a really great nose and then unfortunately goes limp at the back. At first I thought: mandatory purchase for 60-65 €. Only limited now. If the finish is not so important to you, but has a lot of fun smelling, I recommend the drops.
Нос 87 At first very organic peat, then very quickly afterwards sweet and heavy aromas. The sweetness towards marshmallow, a little candied apple. Also some acidity, citrus. Later also something nutty. I feel a little like at the fair between the sausages on the charcoal grill and the candy stand with candy floss and roasted almonds. In the second dram, the sherry influence becomes even more intense, as the smoke tones are barely noticeable. Blackberry and sultana. And if you don't misinterpret it, a "Mü" sulfur. The nose is well balanced. Quite complex and surprising for the price range.
Вкус 82 The first fill barrels give a very spicy start, which can easily compete with the now ashy peatiness. Spice, smoke and a little sweetness are the dominant aromas. Surprisingly little dryness for 1st fill kegs. Well adjusted with around 48%. If it had been diluted further, it would have become too weak.
Финиш 75 Unfortunately, it fades away very quickly, mainly due to the ashiness. A touch of spice still. A little black tea with lemon. Plus a certain soapiness. That’s a little too easy for me.

From the Small Batch Edition by Signatory Vintage for Kirsch Import, a Ballechin from the Edradour Distillery near Pitlochry in the Scottish Highlands. Ballechin is the peat-smoky variant of the Edradour, a smoky Highlander. This makes the whisky interesting and in demand. The Small Batch is a mixture of 1st fill sherry butts and 1st fill bourbon barrels. The color is dark gold, was bottled at 48.1% vol. Okay, 48.1% vol? Sure, is more than 48% vol. ... The whisky was released in 2020 with 2,222 bottles and was still available in a few shops in May 2023 for around €65-75. glen-efze.de

This whisky is not mine, smoked ham is absolutely not my taste in the smoky whiskys.
Нос 70 Medicinal smoke rises sweetly in the nose, leather and citrus scents appear in the background.
Вкус 50 Medicinal smoke is still present, sweet and fruity fills the mouth before drifting towards smoked ham.
Финиш 50 Smoked ham is preserved for a medium length.

A heavily peated Vatting of 2 Ex-Bourbon Casks and 2 Sherry Butts from the Signatory Small Batch Series. Good Value for the 64€ that I paid.

Compared to the standard Ballechin 10, it offers a bit more flavor, but also costs more. If you like Ballechin smoke, you'll be fine with this one.
Нос 84 Reminds me of sweet grapes and then a flower meadow in spring. Slight association of leather, subtle smoke.
Вкус 82 Spices and malty sweetness dominate here, and the smoke is still there too.
Финиш 83 Very spicy and sweet on the finish, becoming slightly dry. A hint of oak is noticeable, rounded off by smoke.

Believe it or not. My very first Ballechin. I like it great balanced Sherry and wonderful Nose full of Sherry on the non Fruit side, and a great Ashy finish. I like those Signatory Small Batches, because they are not Killed by Dark Sherry and the Bourbon Casks always balance them.

The most balanced 'Ballechin' ever. Well, at least that I have tasted, that is. Really nice 'mainland' smoke warmth, bbq notes, and a full, rounded body wrapped in sherry. Ahh. A real winter-warmer in colder countries, and a damn fine dram.

Characteristic Ballechin tones can be found here. Sweetly layered with a nice balance in peat. Surprising combination.
