So, what have we got here? The smallest distillery of Diageo's portfolio, a royal warrant dating back to 1848, and one of the key contributors to JW Blue Label. The nose starts off with cloudy apple juice, fruit salad and maltiness before hints of caramel and sawdust creep in. More apples follow on the palate (apple puree and pie), and there is a delicate touch of oak, ginger and cloves. Easy, short but without any off-notes, the finish does not leave much of an impression. With that being said, I would still prefer Royal Lochnagar 12 over JW Blue Label at any time. He smells a bit weak. Although different in taste than mainstream, but he does not sting me from the stool. Spicy, cloves, all right.

Gold color. Light oily.
Нос 82 Feel the influence of Sherry Oloroso barrels. Dried fruit, but not sweet, dry. A bit of a cellar aroma, but quite pleasant. Maybe light tea notes, dry and astringent. A pinch of spices. Cinnamon. Maybe some citrus underneath.
Вкус 81 Quite dry, bitter, but in a pleasant way. Not on tap. Dried fruits. Spices. White pepper. A pinch of cinnamon. Light barrel notes. Slight bitterness from Sherry Oloroso. Traces of cocoa. Traces of fresh fruit underneath.
Финиш 83 Bitterness from Sherry Oloroso. Cocoa. Dried fruits. Deep underneath notes of fresh fruit. Medium-long finish. Spices. White pepper and cinnamon. Maybe nutmeg.

The ‘Science of whisky’ masterclass [TWE Show Oct ’15] saw Ian Buxton and Professor Paul Hughes explore how whisky is made, how differences between distilleries affect the spirit and the science behind those changes. Focusing on entry level whisky from Dalwhinnie WB, Mortlach WB and Royal Lochnagar WB, we had a rare chance to try the distillate, a young/maturing malt and the final product to be packaged and sold as NAS whiskies, for Dalwhinnie and Mortlach at least. Royal Lochnagar [new make spirit] N: Beer/aldehyde notes, [but less than the Dalwhinnie new make WB] T: Big F: Not yet C: Neutral Royal Lochnagar 4-5yo [abv unknown] N: Well rounded and 'searchable' - something between onion rings and bacon frazzles. T: Same as on the nose. Aside from the smoke its a neutral profile, awaiting info F: Fine C: Just fine Royal Lochnagar 12yo 43% N: Good age T: Soft and rounded F: Relaxed and soft C: Perfect in its class but very little interest to anyone looking for more than an easy gulper. Water kills it and Winter’s Gold WB has the edge. Scores a D

2nd Tried:- Jan 2017 N- Shy and soft, but much too soft and mellow at this age. Still pleasant, nutty and biscuity with buttery notes, quite peppery, but can't stop thinking of a dried hollow barrel. P- Much better on the palate, milky, balance with upfront wild notes of peppercorn, heat-y, medium sweet, nice and warm. F- Medium, sour fruits coating. Enjoy the warm heat of peppery notes that lasts. — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur. *** First Tried:- Sept 2015 / Weighted Rate:- 77pt Nose:- Fresh and leafy, attractive floral paired with moist wood. Nutty and buttery with tobacco and soft smoke. Palate:- Creamy, underlay with some citrus elements, peels, lightly bitter and raw. Touch of sweetness. Finish:- Medium - long, clean, smooth and dry. Attractive floral lingers. Good entry level dram. — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur.

Here, a pleasing light whisky was deliberately produced. He does not do anything, but unfortunately did not like too much.

Easy Drinking. Cooked apples, malt, some toffee and a distinctive oak note that tastes like 12 years. No one to mind, but consistent and with good PLV.

This was one of those malts that gets better as you make your way down the bottle. I am trying to have as many different types of malts as possible so this was always on my list. I was pleasantly suprised at how good it was, not top draw but second draw down.

- a 12-year-old single malt, which unfortunately is far below is my expectations - if I have "only" one single standard bottling the market, then it should be more than be below average.... - compared to many other 10 and 12 standards therefore rather disappointing

A favourite of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, being conveniently situated close by Balmoral Castle. Royal Lochnagar was originally a key ingredient in VAT 69, but most production is now for single malts.

S 6 Very smooth on the nose with no alcohol spikes. An entry-level whisky with limited complexity and layers. Final try after 6 months to empty the last two drams. [78-82] Good buy when I've extra money to spend, most whisky stays within this band. N 25 Vanilla. Pear. Creamy butterscotch. Milk toffee. Very mild citrusy behind. Final try: Sour apple juice. Vanilla. Mildly spirity. P 24 Smooth mouthfeel. Gummy bear sweetness. Some delicate oak spices behind the sweet. Very mild peat behind. Final try: Smooth vanilla & pear. Mildly peated oak spices (black pepper, nutmeg) lingering. F 23 Short, woody finish. Maltiness lingering. Subtle peat underpins the finish. Final try: Short, woody dry finish. Nothing else.

An unusual aroma and the nose can also be convincing. Unfortunately, this doesn't apply to the taste. Very narrow-chested and almost watered down. 46% would help a lot here. Just an all-day dram. Quite tasty but not very complex. But that's his only problem.

Sweet with a little linseed oil on the nose, gently nutty tones in the palate, with a medium long finish. With its heather-like smoke slightly bitter aftertaste, a typical Highlander.

Nose: Woody, herbal, light fruity, hint of sherry. Quite some wood influence, which I find rather pleasing, but not much dept. Taste: Sweet, middle of the road. Sweet toffee. Fruit infused fudge. Green apple. Body: light-medium. Finish: short and light Caramel, vanilla, wood. Price: middle of the road. For an entry level whisky not bad, but there must be very good nice and mature ones out there. Presentation: Classic and decent. Comments: This is a whisky who doesn't have enemies. Everyone will love it, no body will dislike it. So good introduction whisky.

similar to monkey shoulder, could have been great if not for the overall watered down quality

For a standard (supermarket) whisky amazingly good. No high flyer, but beats me the other candidates from this category loose. For example, a Glenlivet / -fiddich 12, Balvenie 12, HP 12 and others can not quite keep up. Am surprised and did not really expect that. Too bad that here for cooling filtering and the dye is used, the 40% Alk. But no watery feeling arise.

I think I picked it up while traveling to Japan a long time ago. You can drink it comfortably for the price, but the finish feels quite sharp, so I can't recommend it.
Нос 81 N: Flowers, honey, tangerine, pear, caramel, a hint of oak. Overall, a fairly bright scent. I can feel the scent of flowers and the bittersweet taste of honey. Afterwards, the scent of sour tangerines is felt. A slight pear coolness mixed with a sweet caramel-like scent. There is also a slight oak scent.
Вкус 84 P: Caramel, oil/mineral, orange, pepper, raw material, dark chocolate, oak At first, it feels like a combination of sweetness and a bit of oil/mineral coating that seems to coat the tongue. Afterwards, citrus notes such as tangerine/orange appear, and a bit of pepper spiciness is also mixed in. A taste like a mixture of dark chocolate with a biological nuance. I can feel the oak here and there
Финиш 80 F: Floral, caramel, nutmeg/pepper, malt, oak The finish is quite short and sharp. The scent of flowers and caramel comes up slightly, and then the spicy and spicy taste, like a mixture of nutmeg and pepper, rises and becomes dominant. Slight malt sweetness, hints of oak
mothers_finest 84 26 jul 2018 10:46 pm
And again such a whisky where the low price is the fatal. All those experts who, given the price, can not attribute a fair rating to the whisky, but can not really explain why. Certainly not the most complex whisky on earth, a slightly sweet nose, vanilla, some malt on the palate and a touch of oak spice on the finish are just not extravagant; but a malt that does not hurt at the price and is certainly better than his reputation! Deductions are due to the coloring and the chillfiltration.

Royal Lochnagar 12 years, 40% alc. original bottling Region: Highlands, Scotland Nose: apple juice, slightly sweet apple juice. After a few minutes he gets drunk, alcohol comes along, it smells like cider. In addition, light tones of caramel and toffee, malt, summer meadow and vanilla. Somehow also charred wood. Overall, however, very light, a little sweet and flowery. Palate: Apples and grassy aromas, almonds and Brazil nuts. A little honey, vanilla and oats. Quite away bitter caramel, which has been heated too long. Again, rather light, only a little oak. Finish: Medium length, drier than the palate. They are stronger than before, and the malt sugar is stronger. Conclusion: To wegschlabbern, simple and beautiful, definitely underestimated. 84/100 points (tasted 2015, approx. 30 €) Thanks to the distillery for the sample! This bottling far exceeded my expectations. The 40% ABV exhibits more character than one would expect from an entry-level Diageo bottling. Its closeness to older production styles is a quirk rarely seen these days. I definitely want to try both the Distillers Edition and a independently bottled version! Price-performance ratio: Good, Medium-good Would I buy it again?: A bottle I'd want to keep!
Нос 83 A nice, fresh nose. The weight of the worm tubs is almost palpable even here. A crisp undertone. Caramel malt. Green plum and jasmine. Maybe green tea. Peaches that become more pronounced over time. Much more intense than I expected. Like muesli with honey and dried red apple. Lime zest. A creamy base note. Vanilla unfolds over time, a nice custard-like quality. Fresh green apple. A touch of almond. Quite enjoyable. More than enough for what it is.
Вкус 84 On the palate, a delicate peat and worm tubs! Beautiful ash. Delightful custard and plenty of vanilla. Green apple and red apple continue. A hint of honey. Almost reminiscent of an old distillery in some aspects. Nice medium-bodied green plums, playdough, lightly roasted almonds and a hint of florals. Subtle supporting stone fruit aromas like red plum and peach. Delightful maltiness. Oatmeal. A hint of saltiness. A hint of bitterness. A little anise, perhaps with a little cayenne pepper underneath. A little clove and perhaps a very light hint of whole black peppercorns in the background.
Финиш 81 Unfortunately, it's a bit underpowered here. The stone fruit opens with a slightly ash-like and much milder cheesy peat. Good olive oil and peach. A little juicy. Medium-low intensity. A finish that's on the shorter-than-medium side of length. Apple peel. Very light floral honey and husk. Ah, a slightly "more powerful" bottling could have changed things.

Royal Lochnagar 12yo, 40%. Dull golden orange. Aroma is orangey, orange blossom, fragrant and citrussy, petals. Good aroma for sure. Very cohesive. A touch muted but what's there is pleasant. ‘Delicate’ is probably the best word. Taste is very easy, quite light and subtle on the palate, well-rounded. Fresh and citrussy, delicate floral and fruity esters. It doesn't come across as underpowered at 40%. This would be an amazing beginner's whisky. Lovely - and just the easiest spirit you could drink. Perfect for the beginning of an evening, or a summer's day whisky. 3.65/87
Louisvandermeer 83 14 jul 2025 11:37 am
A lovely soft summer whisky, unfortunately a little too simple and a bit underpowered, but otherwise nothing to complain about.
Нос 85 Soft and sweet. Think Elstar apples, honey, and peach. There are also notes of pineapple, lemon, and blood orange. Deliciously fresh and summery.
Вкус 83 Quite faint and a bit distant, but not distracting. There are flavors of honey, grain, and caramel. There's also a slightly saltier undertone with a soft oaky bitterness. Right in the background are flavors of almonds and marzipan.
Финиш 80 Quite short and simple, with mainly honey, caramel, and oak flavors. Not bad, but it fades a bit too quickly.
