[November 2022] A quick review of a small sample... which is both sulphur-spoiled (burned matches) and rather simple in its profile. This is just a mere shadow of what the mighty Macallan distillery produced during its glory times (before 1989) and to be honest: I would not spend any money on a dram of such rather disappointing drinking quality, not kidding folks! There is just one great thing about the modern Macallan only - and that thing is called marketing.

A bit disappointing for the big name. Still stimulating on the nose, it is surprisingly sharp in the mouth and too flat on the finish. 81-85 – Wow, really good one

Be careful, sulfur plays a role here. Not absolutely dominant, but noticeable.

Initially dirty and musty, these notes give way to a fruity and aromatic profile. Very fresh notes, tropical fruits, freshly squeezed orange juice, and dried fruit, are found there. The alcohol is well integrated. |

Very sweet with figs, but also quite sulfurous. Air and time help here. Eventually, the typical aromas of oranges, raisins, and dried apricots emerge. |

Sounds fruity, but only with medium intensity and length |
An average rating of over 90 points is either well-intentioned, delusional or profit-driven. I'm not a sulfur hater and I still like this note - like here - but here too it's just too present for me to assume a clean sherry malt. With a lot of good will and a 20-year-old cask strength and a good distillate, I can see a maximum of 89 points here. I have friends who find 14 points less here. You can see how far the range is... :-)

The first nose is spicy sherry and a good dose of matches. The sherry flavors are good and balanced, but that doesn't help much when the dominant flavor part is the match. I can live with sulfur if it's still well embedded in the overall aroma profile, as it is here. |

The sulfur only becomes more subtle after 30 minutes, but it's always there. But because there are also sweetish-spicy sherry aromas and I find the distillate quite good, I can honestly award 89 points here, because 20 years and a good distillate are still a stable combo for me, even with dominant sulfur notes. |

The mouthfeel is good and the finish is medium. A solid 89 points for a 20 year old cask strength. Not more but also not less. Here the sulfur is least present after 20 minutes. |
The latest releases from the Speymalt series tie in with times long past and bring to light the long-missed character of a distillery, which unfortunately had to make way for marketing in the last 15 years. Chapeau to Gordon MacPhail! There could be a deduction for the price, but that has nothing to do with the taste.

If the distillery name weren't on it, it would probably have at least 5 points less on average. To be honest, I'm a little surprised how he currently gets almost 90 points, even from many "established" users. In my eyes a harsh, younger-looking malt. Sure, it's floral, fresh and also has a slight sweetness to offer. But it fits seamlessly into many other Speyside single casks. I find neither an outstanding maturation nor an exuberant complexity here. Name aside, a rather average Speysider. If you included the price, you'd be back at a catastrophic PLV. No, other people are welcome to hype it. Had a 22 Ben Nevis in my glass yesterday (182109), which beats this one by far. Despite the absurd push reviews from some shop owners.

... an incredible floral variety such as yellow Buddleja lilac and jasmine takes center stage here with delicious freshly sliced lemon. Then vanilla, fine passive sherry aromas with blackcurrant sorbet garnished with orange peel and fresh peppermint and passion fruit that turn into cinnamon and ginger. |

... very complex and lush, lively and powerful, just very elegant, delicious because of the spicy, leathery, warm custard aromas. Also direct fruit compote with dark chocolate, roasted hazelnuts and caramelized apple pancakes. |

very long, very sweet, with cherry, fine nutmeg spice, pipe tobacco, balsamic vinegar and hints of roasted oak. In addition clearly with caramelized popcorn and lightly salted walnuts. |

classic Macallan taste, sweet, fruity, light oak and nut aromas. The cask strength suits him well, great whisky.

The scent is quite exciting and complex: caramel fudge, butter biscuit, lukewarm yeast and apple cake, rather subtle sherry with a delicate note of sulphur Taste? First of all, almost everything is killed by alcohol. The good 57% hit it hard, apart from a sherry sweetness there is hardly anything to be perceived. With water, which it definitely needs, a spicy, oaky note is added, but the alcohol remains present, halving the perceived age. Overall just the shadow of a whisky that Macallen was no longer when this bottling was distilled. Just disappointing for the distillery's claim to self.
Had this one in a local smokers lounge, the price for a 2cl pour was reasonable, regarding the fact of the bottle price so I tried this one. It's a good whisky, but not spectacular, especially for the price, I was not impressed...short: overhyped. Especially the nose was not impressing at all. Every Springbank, even the 10year beats the s*** out of this. Don't believe the hype.

Very closed, little brown sugar and licorice, oak was very much hidden and the sherry cask not too present. A few drops of water did not really open up this dram in the nose. Air did a little. |

Quite rich sweetness, hints of caramell, slightly on the dry side, but the alkohol very well integrated. Maybe hidden. Almost no spice or fruityness, which changed a lot with some drops of water. This one opens up then, the oak comes through better, the spices are just delicious, still lacking the sherry influence, could be fruitier and more complex. The alcohol opens up as well and the mouthfeel develops more to the creamy side by adding water. |

The Finish was the best part of it and here as well, you need to add water for that nice rich spicy finish which is max. medium long, but rich. sweetness, some licorice, caramell, ginger and malt spices...very pleasant, but not overwhelming. |
