Односолодовый ислейский виски, где всё выстроено вокруг мощного торфа при 60% с удивительно интегрированным спиртом. Опытные ставят стабильно высоко, но часть ревьюеров упрекает в одномерности и предсказуемости.

В аромате — сладкий торфяной дым с копчёностями (запечённый окорок, бекон), маслянистость, ваниль, мята, тимьян и травы, грильованный персик и морские ноты сушёных водорослей; профиль воспринимается зазывным и насыщенным. Во вкусе спирт при более чем 60% встроен на удивление гладко, без жжения: сухой травянистый дым, ваниль, ирис, орех и марципан, кофе с молоком, солёность, местами горькая аптечная (йодистая) нотка и лёгкая пластмасса. Тело плотное, обволакивающее, с сухим финалом; послевкусие долгое, дымно-торфяное, к концу подсушивающее золой, со сладким ячменным сахаром и травяно-цветочными оттенками. Вода делает аромат менее торфяным, а вкус — округлее и слаще, хотя усиливает вяжущую горечь.
Хвалят прежде всего цельность, гладкость высокого градуса и вкусную работу торфа; опытные ревьюеры держат оценки плотно в районе 88–89. Основная критика идёт от части остальных: виски называют одномерным и предсказуемым, «сконструированным» ради торфа, где остальные оттенки прячутся на фоне, в отличие от сбалансированной классики; один автор отмечает столкновение кисло-сладких ячменных и йодистых тонов и уступку более сложным собратьям по линейке (PC6). Разброс оценок узкий (85–91), расхождение не столько в качестве, сколько в отношении к самому стилю тяжёлого торфа.

WITH WATER The nose is a little less peat with notes of baked ham. The palate is basically the same but more mouth filling, as if the liquid has fattened up. Finish is still long and fizzy. This is really good and for 60% abv very smooth with no burn.
8 years, American Oak Casks, PC: nothing can really go wrong here. It's nice to see confirmation in such a tasty way.

[November, 2018] I had another dram during a Jim McEwan tasting in Bonn... ...and this is the typical modern designed whisky that just goes for one dimension: peat. Simple and very predictable, but whoever loves this style - enjoy! I enjoy such a dram from time to time too but not more than one per week, usually...
| Нос | 86 | The colour is pale gold and the nose offers the typical spiked profile of a modern "designed" whisky that goes mainly for the peaty aromas (compare this in a head-to-head to the Traditional Scotch profile of e.g. Lagavulin 08-years old where the peat is perfectly balanced with sweet and malty flavours). No, it is not bad - it is just too ... predictable. |

| Финиш | 85 | The dram arrives bold and quite hot in the mouth with a nice coating effect and a minor drying feeling. The finish is long and guess what? It is peat-dominated but the sweet barley sugars dare to grow a little stronger here what is better. Towards the end it gets drying again (cold ashes) like so many heavily peated whiskies. Water turns the dram sweeter and more approachable but it increases the bitter-astringent mouthfeel too, unfortunately. |

It’s big with an allium floral yeastiness and a smoky-spirit oiliness. T: There’s nothing out of form here but it’s simply not gelling for me, neat or otherwise, There’s a collision of flavours which i find somewhat grating. Given my love for PC6, as much as I embrace this PC8, the sweet/sour barley/TCP profile just isn’t cutting it. It develops with an almost fatty mouthfeel but turns dry and resinous. [It goes back on the shelf for quite a while].Months later: The cloying muddle has lifted. Oily yet spirity but with a thick slick body, it’s now executing well. I like the sweet nature that lies within the allium savoury. My grumble is it doesnt have the complex variations like say the PC6, which i can’t help comparing it against. Then again, there’s something of Clairins here. What is that herb? It’s strong and particular but i can’t quite get it. Overall it’s very cohesive. F: Finishes just fine as a chocolatey barley spirt with a sweet-cereal herbal finish and a little TCP. 8 months later there’s much less chocolate. Now it’s way more dry and malty with a little straw like cocoa powder. Pretty good ending actually, medium length. C: Not the most spectacular ‘PC’ but still a very decent whisky and there’s no denying its calibre. However it just doesn’t hit the mark as far as flavours go, especially on the palate. Rather down to personal preference this one.Scores a B
