Quite herbal and leathery, interesting profile but not necessarily my favority

An exceptionally good Benromach with extremely interesting aromas. Great clan soda.

Wilted autumn leaves, tobacco left behind in a packed pipe, a dried lemon slice, and reduced, spicy grape juice. Already quite appealing. Then, from the next table, a whiff of smoked trout, and the mouth waters. |

Hey there, what are those delicious red gummy candies with white pepper and ginger in them? What? No, we're tasting the finest olive oil, sitting comfortably by the wood-burning stove. What are you all talking about? I'm making elderflower jelly with tonka bean. Calm down, all three of you are right – that's just the diverse range of flavors this special Benromach offers. |

Quite a pleasant cask strength whisky! Everything is well put together and decent, but it didn't grab me. I'd much rather drink some Kilkerran 8. 21 22 22 21
An intriguing Benromach that, in the blind tasting, was more accurately described as being from Campbeltown. A bit earthy, but very tasty.

Benromach 2003-2025, 22 years old, 55% ABV. Original bottling for Wu Dram Clan. Maturation: Batch of two bourbon and two sherry casks. Nose: A very ripe first impression with banana, mango, and coconut. Also raisins and grape seeds, an old smokehouse, damp leaves, and citrus fruits. Now the smoke intensifies, it smells of a coal cellar, peat, and a mixture of gasoline and a workshop. I need to get used to the many impressions, but then it becomes a bit sweeter again. Now I detect orange marmalade and hazelnut spread. Intriguing. Palate: It gets even more complex. Oranges and tangerines, dried mango, freshly crushed pepper, a touch of chili and ginger, spiced olives, sloe berries, and wood ash. Here, a really nice dose of spice was added. Finish: Very long, with the peat smoke lingering endlessly at the end, along with ash and soot. Also present are notes of olive pits, oyster shell, lime with sea salt, and tobacco. Conclusion: A whisky just the way I like them, but also a real heavyweight. Diverse, wild, a little unruly, and therefore incredibly fun. This bottling isn't about harmony; it's about pure whisky enjoyment. 90/100 points (2025)
Nose Banana bread, oat cakes, herbal sherry, Palate Oat cakes, vanilla, orange linseed cupcakes, dry sherry, banana Finish Rather short, slightly tannic, slightly drying, dried fruits but orange dried fruits rather than rich red. My palate could be shot… not picking up a great deal of peat or tobacco Compared with WB262068 - 90pts Nose Initially TERRE D'HERMÈS Eu de toilette following pour… but slightly watered down and a little dirtier… earthy unwashed oranges. Citrus, mandarins, mineral Palate Hint of smoke, oranges, citrus, salt, mineral, good viscosity, slightest hint of sulfur but pleasant Finish Dry, sweet and savoury combination Truly excellent- I don’t even really like Benromach, it’s not my kind of malt, but this is complex and classy.

A superbly matured 2003 Benromach. The sherry casks clearly dominate, with notes of tobacco, dried fruit, and orange. Add to that the light Benromach smokiness. Beautifully composed and interwoven. However, I miss the tropical fruits like grilled pineapple, which were so fantastic in the pure 1st Fill Bourbon barrels from 2003. And the issue price of 250 EUR is quite steep.
Smaller review for a small sample (4cl). Good whisky, but somewhat uneventful: not boring, but not too memorable as well. I would not go for a full bottle, yet I am glad I tried it, since I like Benromach quite a bit.

I would not have guessed 22 years, but I wouldn't say any number under 17 either. The peat has matured and become more toned down and aromatic, less damp-earthy and more dry (cigar box). Clear alcohol note, honey, fresh herbs, soft leather, the Benromach spicy-sherry character is still there (smoked paprika). There is a fresh malt note pervading the whole affair, something I do not get as clearly in their other sherried releases, but find quite harmonizing and appealing here. Quite good, water turns the nose way less sweet, more herbal, more grain-forward, more farmy (manure?): I like both the neat and the reduced version here, 2 completely different experiences. |

More expressive here. More peat, more sherry, more everything. More dark-red fruits and leather-dust (sherry), the peat is more in sync with the Benromach profile (earthy and herbal). Resinous, honey, black pepper, a fascinating mature barley note. Water kills the richness here, IMO. |

Medium-short to medium in length, lacks oomph IMO. Very soft without being suggestive or unique, semi-dry with little aromatics, some spices, some common sherry sweetness. Herbaceous, light earthy peat, menthol, a bit alcoholic, feels way younger here. Water does not harm the finish. |

A 5cl sample was tasted, both with and without added water. Overall, a solid whisky that, in my opinion, doesn't handle water well and is best enjoyed neat.

Without water: strong, lots of oak, coffee, grape sweetness, dark fruits, tobacco, plum jam, citrus fruits. After adding 2 teaspoons of water, the taste is basically retained, however, an unpleasant spiciness is added. |

Neat: smoky, very bitter, mocha, oak spice. Water intensifies the bitter notes. |
What a cask combination! We were told at the fair that this Benromach 2003 comes from two creamy sherry casks and two bourbon barrels – with one of the bourbon casks apparently being peated. And you can really tell right from the start – blind, you’d almost mistake it for a dirty Springbank. Wow. Then there’s the 55%, giving the whole batch a serious punch. Creamy, spicy, smoky, earthy, and mineral – absolutely my kind of dram. Apparently around €250 a bottle. If that’s true, it’s almost laughably low. Cracking whisky! Well done, lads – keep it up!
