Deanston is one of those distilleries that grabbed itself by the boot straps at the exactly right moment, and did almost everything right. And to top it off they don't make too much fuzz of it. The 12YO is good, the 15 even better, so I was really looking forward to this 18YO sample from karloff.
Нос 90 Delicate, unusual, interesting. Sweet, toasted wood vanilla. Strawberries with custard. Juicy melon with a twist of lemon and a pinch of spice. And karloff is spot on with the floor laminate. That's the unusual thing that struck me right away. For anyone that have done home improvement it is a familiar and very pleasing smell.
Вкус 91 Mouthfeel is light, but with a very firm texture. Citric fresh with a good dollop of spice. Not in any way overwhelming, just enough to excite. Orange chocolate. Lightly salt licorice. A sort of controlled transition from a fresh arrival to something bolder at the swallow.
Финиш 88 Fairly long, and just slowly fading. Again calm and very controlled. This whisky had it's course set from the moment it was poured, it knew where it was heading. I just leaned back and enjoyed the scenery.

Golden color. Oily whisky.
Нос 88 Volatile, pleasant and quite rich. Typical bourbon notes dominate. A lot of sweets. Caramel and vanilla. Sweet, light cream. A pinch of spices. White pepper. Very intense and full. Citrus underneath. Oranges, quite sweet. Honey.
Вкус 87 Sweetness. Lots of vanilla and caramel. Citrus underneath. Orchard fruit. Apples in caramel. A bit of oak, but literally poured with caramel. A pinch of spices. White pepper. Green apple. oily. Pleasant. A bit of barrel. Cocoa.
Финиш 85 Sweetness. Vanilla. Caramel. Traces of orchard fruit. Maybe some citrus. Spices. White pepper. Spice on the finish, but not in a disturbing way. Long finish.

Good, decent whisky from Deanston, yet not very exciting or adventurous. Fairly priced for its age though.

A great and light fruitiness. Very good to drink. But nothing more. A slight sharpness on the finish, better on the 2nd dram. 71-80 – Fine, like to drink by time

This is another great whisky from Deanston and again reasonably priced. This will stick in my mind for some time because when I got back home from having my dog put down I opened this and drank half of it. It helped with the grief and the sleep, plus it tasted damn good. Not a bad send off for the big lad. X
Нос 88 Lovely nice fresh oak ,banana, white sugar, Dolly mixture sweets. This really is a treat to the senses. After nosing powerful peat all day this would be a spar treatment for the nose. Honey Dew Mellon, laminated flooring and a new book.
Вкус 90 It says a few things on the label, some i disagree with and some i don't like barley sugar, spiced ginger bread and white pepper. Again the 46.3% is spot on and no water needed. Fresh and spicy on the palate, a real summer treat even when it is cold outside and pissing down. Just close your eyes, dream and sip. Things keep coming like liquorice root, citrus, white chocolate and a herb like oregano.
Финиш 89 From start to finish this is fresh and spicy. A bit dry at the death but that is okay because the flavours are still there and stick around until it almost turns into butterscotch.

Deanston is a distillery that I rarely drink. So it was about time again. I bought this 18 in 2022 for €81.50. In early summer 2024 it will be available for between €115 and €150. That's crazy! Deanston 18 is an honest whisky: matured in 1st fill bourbon, not colored, not chill-filtered and bottled at the 46.3% vol. typical of the former Burn Stewart Distilleries. For 18 years, the color is quite light golden. This is the 18 in the (not quite so) new design. The predecessor in the old design was darker, and it was also finished in 1st fill bourbon casks, which may have contributed to a color boost. glen-efze.de

Initial notes give me an immediate thumbs up. It’s smooth, a tad powdery, and a bit of a palate pleaser. Turnip takes a bow in the tasting, wrapped up in Madagascar vanilla with a hint of marzipan. The finish has a subtle woody vibe, always tag-teaming with talc.

When I first opened the bottle, I got a lot of vegetal sulphur which was off putting. This gradually disappeared over 12-18 months, and left behind what is an absolutely gorgeous whisky. I'd rate the first half of the bottle around 85 but it's an easy 89 now so averaging it down to an 87.

"A well-aged, light-bodied bourbon cask whisky" The nuances unique to first-fill bourbon casks are alive and well, with strong sweetness, apples, tropical fruits, and vanilla. It's a whisky that I can drink whenever I want to drink sweet bourbon cask whisky without any off-notes that are too jarring. I was worried that it would feel thin because it's not CS, but the spice in the finish helps to organize the sweetness in the aroma and taste and finish it cleanly. If I buy a bottle, I think I can drink it whenever I want to drink sweet and light whisky.
Нос 87 Toffee / Honey / Flower / Green Apple / Ripe Apple / Lemon / Jackfruit / Pineapple / Vanilla / Ginger / Cinnamon / A hint of Oak / Milk Chocolate / Lactic Acid / Bread - It has a slight buzz, but is very soft. - The apple scent, which seems to be a combination of ripe apple and fresh green apple, approaches strongly from the beginning. The sweet scent mixed with a soft feeling like toffee sometimes approaches as a honey sweet scent mixed with a light floral scent, giving it a colorful feel. Also, the sweet scent blends with the apple scent to create a feeling of ripe apple. Also, the light and freshness of green apple is added, making the apple scent very prominent. There is also a soft, nutty taste of grain, like a bit of bread, mixed in. The citrus of lemon is mixed in here and there. - The nuances of tropical fruits are also quite rich, with the sweet scent of jackfruit being the strongest. The slightly tangy scent of pineapple is added to add depth to the layers, and the rich vanilla is felt together, making it fun to smell various scents. - Although it is not perfectly balanced, there is a hint of ginger and cinnamon spice. The soft bitterness is reminiscent of milk chocolate, and a slight yogurt-like lactic acid flavor is often felt. There is also a slight woodiness like raw oak, and a savory aroma like bread.
Вкус 89 Ripe apple / green apple / bread / honey / flower / jackfruit / pineapple / coconut / quince / vanilla / ginger / cinnamon / milk chocolate / hint of lemon / woody - As it enters your mouth, ripe apples like honey spread throughout your mouth. The floral notes of the flowers are mixed in to a certain degree, so it feels vivid, but the freshness of the green apple is also mixed in, so the nuances of apple and honey feel colorful and strong. - The soft, grain-like nutty flavor of bread is spread throughout the entire taste. Once you get used to the apple, the tropical fruit nuances are also diversely displayed. The sweetness of jackfruit, the tangy tropical fruit nuance of pineapple, and the soft sweetness of coconut all come together to create a fun drink. There is a slight nuance of raw apple mixed in. - While vanilla is richly felt, the spiciness of ginger makes the tongue feel slightly tingly, trying to balance the sweetness. The nuance of cinnamon is not strong, but comes up gently in the nose. - The soft bitterness of milk chocolate spreads slightly, and the refreshing citrus of lemon is also felt slightly. Even among ex-bourbons, there is a faint oakiness that is not dark.
Финиш 87 Honey / Milk chocolate / Cacao nibs / Tannin / Ripe apple / Green apple / Jackfruit / Pineapple / Vanilla / Cinnamon / Pepper - The finish is medium to long. - The sweetness of honey is strongly felt along with a slight floral note. The soft bitterness of milk chocolate begins to be felt, but the tannins are gradually felt and a bitter feeling like cacao nibs is also felt. - As you pass through the first half of the finish, the sweetness of ripe apples and the freshness of green apples become stronger. As the nuance of apples passes, the nuances of tropical fruits come in. The sweetness of jackfruit is felt, but the tangy feeling of pineapple is quite strong. - Vanilla is richly felt, and cinnamon blends in with it. A slight peppery tingle remains on the tongue.

One of my best ever whisky experiences was with the Deanston 18. I was travelling in Scotland, staying by Loch Morar, Scotland’s deepest lake. I had two bottles of whisky with me for the trip - a small bottle of Clynelish 14, and an even smaller 5cl sample from my first ever bottle of Deanston 18. I was sitting in a warm room, looking out onto the lake being battered by a deluge of rain coming in from the Atlantic. It felt like an appropriate moment to pour a dram of the Deanston. Mind blown. Something about the singular, honest character of that whisky, at that place and that time just resonated with me. It has never tasted as good since, but I’m happy to get close. The headline is: if you enjoy a classic malty highland whisky, the Deanston 18 is amazing value at below 60 GBP. Buy some, and then buy some more. Tasting notes: This one shows it’s age in the initial woodiness - if you don’t let it breathe for at least 20 minutes, you’ll have a bad time. While the 18 retains Deanston’s malty character, it is a completely different beast from the 12. The 12 is open, a bit spiky, with a variety of easily identifiable notes flying about. In the 18 everything has melded into a dense, cohesive whole. Many may prefer the 12, but the 18 going for a completely different experience worth seeking out for its own sake. A very candied nose. Caramel, gingerbread, dry earthy wood (with slight tinges of green, reminding me of bark and moss - dry forest notes). Rich, spiced honey, pretty hints of floral rosewater, honeyed oat biscuits. All of these delicious notes balance the earthy wood in a brilliant way, keeping the overall experience light and enjoyable. Some dry ginger and soft citrus (orange and lemon peels). In the mouth, the Deanston is lighter than expected from the notes, light to medium bodied. Incredibly malty in the arrival, it’s like drinking oat biscuits, so good! A surge of honeyed fruit is followed by a balanced build-up of spice. Finish, is mostly woody notes.

For under £60 on offer, it would have been rude not to buy a bottle ;-) Classic, muted Deanston nose, that takes a drop of water and a good time to air in the glass in order to release its full treasures. Then you get a very well-aged, bourbon cask dram. Malty honey, creamy vanilla and well-integrated oak dominate the nose, with some floral notes, alongside cinnamon and nutmeg lingering in the background. Classic, nutty Deanston prolife on the palate, with the bourbon oak supporting, rather than dominating. Must be a good blender’s nose to integrate the chosen casks so well. A wave of rich toffee cream leads you into a long, sweet and oaky finish, with malty notes reminding you of the source. Great whisky, prepared as it should be (ncf, no colour etc), sold for a very reasonable price. Deanston is knocking it out of the park of late (the distillery only 23-25yo, Chronicles 1st edition, fino cask release, and Oloroso cask release all spring to mind).

Deanston 18 year old 46.3% HSMSW. NCF and aged in first fill ex bourbon casks. 30ml sample at home. Mid tone yellow, natural looking. Aroma is caramel biscuit, from a distance I get Tunnock's caramel wafer but with my nose in the glass it’s more toffee apple, green apple crumble is dominant, maybe something like guava, caramelised fruit sugars, someone put too much green jelly in the trifle. Impressions of deep sweetness yet also tangy. Faint musty wood behind all the fruity dessert vibes. Potent. Pleasant. Not particularly complex but it’s nice. Body is watery to maybe very lightly oily. Taste has the prickliness of salt, some musty wood, the fruitiness is much more subtle on the palate than in the aroma. It takes a while for the buttery or fudgey sweetness to show itself properly, but then it shows up in every sip (behind the resinous salty hit). It’s warming on the swallow but not too hot at the ABV. There’s a second wave of the sweet and fruity flavours on the finish. The linger has a fair bit of what I’d call alcohol thinning (becomes dry, hot, ethanol takes over the flavours a bit). A good whisky. I can see why it attracted a lot of positive attention. 3.5/84

I think the Deanston 18 has helped me crystallise the difference between a complex whisky and a challenging one. A challenging whisky will make me think "Huh. That's different. Do I like it?" Whereas the experience of drinking this, was me going "Mmmmm." and then silently nodding in agreement for 20 minutes. I got along with this very well and found lots to appreciate. Everything makes sense here, and the components are carefully curated to deliver a very particular experience of of a well aged, unsherried, unpeated, Highland whisky. Trying this for the first time was a bit like meeting someone you have instant chemistry with and then organically recreating the Step Brothers, *Did We Just Become Best Friends?* Meme. To nitpick, straight out of the bottle, it might be a little over-eager to share that ex-bourbon oak lineage, but letting it rest turns a very good whisky into a great one.
Нос 90 Ripe chunks of banana and nectarine, liberally drizzled with honey (identical in colour to the burnished gold whisky) and garnished with tiny lemon thyme leaves. A happy baking accident involving malt biscuits and buttery vanilla shortbread. Sanded oak saturated with wood polish made of 4 parts orange oil to 1 part resin.
Вкус 90 Electrically charged pepper that gets progressively tamer on repeat sips, with rounded, honeyed malt looming over. A layer of golden stone fruit that's temporally untethered, managing to simultaneously reflect its most ripe and also driest moments, later sprouting a well-cooked tropical accent and a viscous ginger glaze reduction.
Финиш 89 A gentle but pervasive dusting of nutmeg, mace and white pepper over double stuffed caramel oozing Stroopwafel. Tonic infused with sweet, candied lemon and pink grapefruit peel, fresh spearmint and oregano. Just the right amount of oak bite and earthy tobacco tannin.

Full and vibrant. Bourbon fans rejoice, this is the malt for you! Peanuts, nut oils, vanilla, caramel, some mild smoked chilli peppers, lemon skins, spritz of oranges, white pepper, and a hint of green apples. Typically, for these basic flavours I'd only score up to an 86 if done well, but this one's so vibrant and flavourful, it gets a +1. Well done, Deanston!

Before that I tried only 12 and Virgin Oak, the latter by the way is very cool. Here, 18 years old! The aroma is very good, classic bourbon extract, the aroma goes in the fruity-herbal direction. As for me, the reference fragrance for this type of exposure. The taste is good, light, field herbs and wax, very drinkable, light bitterness. In conclusion, we have a beautiful classic malt, which lacks nothing, with a good degree and endurance. I'm more of a fan of double helmets and endurance, but if you take a purely ex-bourbon helmets, then everything went well.

Нос 87 N: Apple, Pear, Honey, Pepper, Herbs, Mint, 46–50% ABV A pleasant bourbon-cask fruit sweetness greets from the start. Apple, pear, and honey — bright yet not light sweetness. A kick of pepper balances the sweetness. Mint and herbs give a refreshing finish. The notes are strong but not highly complex. It feels like a neat, official-style bottling. Bourbon cask comes to mind, though the herbal note stands out enough to suggest there may be some sherry influence. Taking another sip while writing, I notice a red apple character and a touch of nuttiness, which makes the guess harder. Bottles that come to mind: Glen Grant 15, Balvenie Single Barrel 12, Singleton?
Вкус 87 P: Apple, Orange Jam, Honey, Herbs, Vanilla, Pepper, Tea Leaves Sweetness of apple, honey, and vanilla. Orange jam brings a sticky, dense citrus note rather than sharpness. The herbal character emphasized on the nose comes through even more clearly on the palate. A pleasant bitterness of tea leaves lingers in the back. On the palate, the alcohol strength barely shows, so I’d guess this is an official bottling and abv 43–48%. It tastes above average, and without the shortcomings of a young whisky — I’d say 15 years or older.
Финиш 86 F: Honey, Herbs, Oak The finish carries on to a medium length. Rather than fruit notes, a straightforward honey sweetness remains, together with herbal tones and a slight oak bitterness.

Deanston 18 Year delivers a well-crafted malt experience with a balanced palate that emphasizes both maltiness and fruitiness. It may not have the "wow" factor, but it excels in its execution, offering a smooth and enjoyable drinking experience. The subtle complexity and harmonious flavors make it a solid choice for bourbon cask enthusiasts, providing a pleasurable sip with each taste. The whisky improves with each sip, making it a delightful dram to explore.

Solid balance and easy enjoyment
Нос 89 Opens with slightly dry apple flesh. Oak shows early, with some herbal tones and an apple-chewy-candy note. With time, tropical fruit grows stronger and pineapple becomes clearer. Ginger spice tickles the nose, and a faint lactic note appears alongside a malty, cereal/nutty warmth. Peach follows in the background.
Вкус 88 A very “classic bourbon-cask” profile. Quite oily and malty up front. The fruit reads more like red-apple flesh, and there’s a pleasant nutty flavour. Oak gradually builds, and with saliva, tropical fruit notes start to show more clearly.
Финиш 86 The oily/malty sweetness carries through with caramel and oak. A small bitter edge appears toward the end, but it stays easy-going. Short to short–medium.

Just to state that this banger won 1st place on a four person blind against Springbank 18yo, Bruichladdich 18yo, Springbank 12 Cask Strength, Craigellachie 17yo and Glen Scotia 15yo (OSWAs 2025 finalists for Scotch Whisky of the Year line up).

Best nose of the core range, in my opinion. Falls a bit short on the palate and finish, but overall really good. Rather spend my money on a virgin oak or 15 organic, though.
Нос 86 Eucalyptus, vanilla, banana, toast. Also getting some dried fig, even though this is exB only. Minerality. Tutti frutti fruitiness beneath the surface.
Вкус 83 In the mouth it turns to the undefinable mush more commonly known as balance. Put differently, the elements that were easy to pick out on the nose are more difficult to rediscover on the palate. Slight let-down. Medium mouthfeel. But still, toasty vanilla, some citrus and maltiness are present.
Финиш 80 Slightly sweet, medium-low vanilla length. No lasting fruitiness that I can detect.

BLIND PROVEN Brief : Firm and rich, but not with a variety of flavours, but in development very fragrant, fresh and aromatic, yet keeps a very understandable profile Aroma: Apple juice without sugar - base Cinnamon, basilico, a drop of lemon juice, lily, almost unnoticable cloudy backstage, after a taste peach comes in, mint candies Taste: Arrival : fresh and clean lemonade with apples in it, no sugar added Development: 1st stage : moderate spices come up, cinnamon, peach, apple and lemon sour juice is crawling in 2nd stage : ends with an apple-juice puree and a speaking sour note

Sweet, spicy, gingery, creamy mouthfeel, slightly dusty. Decent complexity, lots of stone fruits. Malty.

i was so wrong about this whisky. At the opening in 2022, there was a strong sulfury note floating on the malty sweetness, making the whisky stands between the line of nasty and clean. However, after resting in the bottle for 3 years, the sulfery note has almost gone, leaving only a few PPM of complexity in the adoring vanilla sweet. Deandton 18 white-labeled has become my favourite bourbon cask-matured whisky this year. It was a huge shock to me that I nearly dumped this mild shining gem.
Нос 88 Very light, pineapple, cooling mint, malty sweetness, and vanilla, some DEANSTON typical [sulfury] note floating on the surface, came along with the warm cooling note. After a few years of oxidation, the off-notes are gone, leaving complexity within the juice. NIce sweet, fine oaky aroma, and a hint of smoky notes.
Вкус 86 During the opening, Light sweetness turns into sulfury solid soap and wax candle flavor, very much like peat with sulfur, similar to the Deanston 12. Complex, but weird. After a few years of bottling oxidation, sweetness and oak flavour stay, weird flavour has disappeared.
Финиш 86 Medium long.

Very vanilla and honey prominent; extremely subtle citrus/grassy notes do eventually develop in the background, but are then too overshadowed. The extreme smoothness in the finish does give it an edge, but it's by no means extraordinary.

Decent, and an integrity bottle, but just a bit too sweet for my taste. Too high a percentage of first fill bourbon?

Old bourbon whisky. The age gives good integration. A bit sweet, but not too sweet. On the cheap side for the age, but that's fair. You will find cleaner, more complex 18yo's, but probably not for this price.
Нос 87 American oak vanilla, malt, honey, ginger.
Вкус 88 Arrival: sweet vanilla citrus. Then rich honey, vanilla oak, Gros Michel bananas and ginger.
Финиш 87 Medium. Vanilla, caramel, banana cinnamon. Axe deodorant note in the back, might not be your thing but that's Deanston.

Vanilla, apple, lemon oil and pears. Pencil shavings and a creamy soapy note. Juicy barley and honey prominent. Also a lovely lactic note.Long lingering finish. excellent whisky

A significant improvement on the 12- the extra time in wood smooths out the edges beautifully. It's exactly what you expect from solid whisky- no surprises, no mishaps. Well worth it to have a bottle on hand, particularly when you can find it for under £100.
Нос 85 Extremely clean and bright. Lots of honey with a little vanilla. Touch of white grape: sweet, sour, and a little wine-like, a dry white. Malty in the literal sense, malted milk, a bit of grainy porridge.
Вкус 87 Powerful, creamy honey and vanilla. There's absolutely a waxy note in the mouthfeel- it's quite smooth and coating. Definitely sweet, in the fashion of a well-made dessert- sweet enough, never cloying. Quickly moves into mild wood notes mingling with malt: a touch of charred bread, Crème Pâtissière, crème brûlée after a vigorous blowtorching- all these taken with a white (dessert) wine.
Финиш 85 Medium to long. The wood notes move towards bitter, tannic oak, a little drying. Fundamentally differs, but refreshes the palate entirely. Lingers on to a sultana-tinged wood after a while.

This is very good staff. Let it stand a month to oxidize well, it will show its full face. Just amazing and one of whisky that still provides such quality for reasonable price for 18 year scoth. One thing that I didnt like its bottle, it reminds me more of burbon. Kind of american type of bottle.
Нос 87 Sweet, honey, citrus, sherbet, floral, fruits, flowers.
Вкус 85 Oily, sweet, salty, honey, fruits. Have some parfume residue on finish.
Финиш 84 Finish medium short, warming.
