If you like winey, musty whiskies and don't mind sulphur, this may not be too bad. But for my taste, it's a failed experiment.

Winey, sweet, and softly yeasty, with a musty note from the wine casks. White pineapple gummy bears. Sulphur in the background, with more than a touch of rubber. |

Sweet and juicy initially, becoming then quickly peppery and sulphuric. Pretty oaky, with a scruffy, damp/moldy cask impression. Not my jam. |

I'm usually always up for a Moscatel finish. This bottling surprised me quite a bit, but not in a positive way. If there had been an "8" on the label instead of the "16", I would have believed it immediately. At around €80, the value for money is absolutely terrible.

Very closed at first. Needs time and warmth to open up. Unfortunately, not much happens. Vanilla, citrus notes, green twigs, honey, baked apple, cake, oranges, apricots, modeling clay. The alcohol brings a slight sharpness. |

Blind tasting Nose: Immediately a slight sulfur note of a clear sherry influence, although the color is quite light. Very spicy. The alcohol stings your nose a bit at first. Fermented grape must. Light sweetness. Some marzipan. But the bottom line is that sulfur is already dominant here. Mouth: Sweet start. Very sweet. Spicy wood. Slight bitterness. The sulfur is a little less dominant, but still very present. Now has a nice apple fruitiness. Sweet and sour. Much more present than in the nose. The alcohol is much better integrated than it was in the nose. Nevertheless, the bottom line is that the whisky seems a bit stormy. In my mind, I'm more likely to think of Sauternes or Madeira maturation on the tongue than Sherry. Finish: Sweetish. Quite long. Warming. Clear oak aromas. But only slight bitter aromas. This sweet and sour note remains until the end. Very interesting bottling. No easy sipping. You have to be in the mood for it. Very varied whisky. That's rather special.
I actually like tomatin and you usually score points with the PLV, but the whisky is a rather unpleasant experience for me and I find it difficult to find good words. Nose maeh, taste iiih, finish bearable, no purchase recommendation and the price is correspondingly utopian. When do you ever award U80 points....

sour, honey sweetness, a bit musty/musty, needs time, vinous, tender fruits in the direction of yellow apple or apricot, has the impression that the wine has tilted, a bit nutty, after the first sip it is a bit more caramel and the mustyness goes away, now i have sulphur, |

After the taste chaos, there is not much more, slightly sweet, something grape-fruity, tolerable, but not tasty either |
seems younger than he is I can't determine the Moscatel finish a bit musty, too bitter, similar to the 14y port, just strange the nose is the best here too....

Okay price for todays market if we look just at age cask type etc... overall pleasantly surprised but wee bit more of cask influence (moscatel one) will probably make me like it little bit more! Air helps to this whisky, but it's pretty fragile with water

This drink can be very brandy-like, but I didn't feel it, once again the wine character is very strong, it is not for everyone. It doesn't feel like it's 16 y. because it's scratchy

The Tomatin 16 Year Old with Moscatel wine finish presents itself as an exceptionally harmonious and well-balanced Highland single malt, in which the sweet, fruity wine finish and the mature oak structure are clearly discernible. On the nose, a pronounced, elegant fruit sweetness emerges, strongly reminiscent of orange marmalade and raisins, typical of the Moscatel cask. This is supported by vanilla and dark honey, which lend the bouquet depth and warmth. Spicy notes develop behind this, along with a distinct yet well-integrated oak spice and toasted almonds, which add a nutty, slightly dry component to the aroma. Overall, the nose is mature, complex, and inviting, with a clear structure and no alcoholic harshness. On the palate, the impression from the nose is confirmed. The whisky starts sweet and creamy, with a smooth texture that integrates the 46% alcohol content very well. Dried apricots, oranges, and caramel provide a juicy, fruity sweetness, while ginger and subtle roasted aromas add excitement and spice. The slightly sulphurous hint of capers remains discreet and blends well into the overall profile without being intrusive. Notes of wood and dark chocolate lend the whisky additional depth and maturity. The overall impression is well-rounded, balanced, and clearly designed for enjoyment. The finish is long, sweet, and creamy, with lingering vanilla and honey notes, accompanied by a subtle oak spice that gives the finish structure. The warmth remains pleasant and controlled, without becoming dry or bitter, and rounds off the whisky very harmoniously. In summary, this 16-year-old Tomatin demonstrates a successful interplay of fruity Moscatel sweetness, mature oak, and creamy texture. It is neither overloaded nor one-dimensional, but rather impresses with its balance, depth, and drinkability. An elegant, approachable, yet sophisticated single malt.

When I smell and drink I have two different products. The fragrance has flowers, sulphur, ozone and sweet dough. The taste is spicy, interwoven with notes of sherry with just the right amount of sweetness. The aftertaste is woody sweet bitter. Sometimes I thought of rum. It's disjointed but fun.

For me, a very out-of-round tomato that doesn't fit into the line of bottlings of the distillery at all. You don't need to talk about the price/performance ratio here.

The sweet wine only shows up at the very beginning, then comes a decent sharpness, significantly more than the 46% would suggest. The spiciness then transports more and more tart-bitter wood notes. |

Nase: Süß, etwas helle Kirsche, etwas Orange, etwas Rotwein, etwas Hefeteig | Geschmack: Süß, würzig, Eiche, etwas Marzipan, helle Kirsche, Trauben | Abgang: Mittellang; süße Noten, etwas Kirsche, etwas Kirschenschale und etwas Malz bleiben. | 85 Punkte

The price is a bit too high for me for this quality. I'd rather have Tomatin Cask Strength, which also has 'my' sulfur taste and even costs a third less. My criteria: Up to 30 points to give away, Up to 60 points for good whisky, up to 90 points above average, Over 90 points, top class.

A typical Tomatin from the start with all its elegance and soft basic character. After a certain time, the Moscatel cask comes through well and gives this whisky its special touch. Taken from the barrel at exactly the right time at the age of 16 and therefore a very round, balanced and easy-to-drink whisky, in which you can taste the harmonious interplay of the different barrel types.

Though it just has 46% Vol you may guess it’s a 50+. After a while my tongue got used to the medical & chemical dominance and shows some influence of the wine cask. Unfortunately not enough to earn a quality seal on moscatel influence. This is accompanied by some heavily roasted toast. |
