This cost me £24 with free postage, bargain. Vanilla by the bucket load on the nose mixed with resin & polish, this is mixed with custard, mango and some green apple. Initial mouthfeel is decent but unexciting at first, very one dimensional. So a simple profile but some nice spice and sugared fruity sweetness on show with a little peat. The finish is really mellow, not too much effect but it lingers for a while. Lets cut to the chase, this is a straight shooter in as much it will not set your world alight but it would be a great session malt. Compared to older OP 12 this is tame, I remember older versions from say 5 years ago had much more fire in them. A good entry level malt, not bad.

The Old Pulteney 12 Years is serious whisky. It's coastal, fruity and well-balanced with enough depth to warrant buying an entire bottle. No frills, just good single malt from Wick.
A perfectly fine entry-level malt, but enthusiasts will likely crave more depth.

Easy drinking. Malty, orange notes. A bit maritime. Unfortunately, the 40% is not enough. A bit wet cardboard on the nose. Good, inexpensive standard.

I didn't pay much for a bottle and one should bear in mind that. The scores are as they are but it was good value. I have certainly tried more interesting Pultney's but I was curious to see if that creamy character was present in the entry-level: it is, but only just.

03/03/2024 - 30 ml Although I really liked it, I was disappointed when I revealed the label in the blind test and was mistaken with a sherry, as I was expecting the infamous salty profusion. After it was developed, I tried to find the salt, but for me it is confused with condiments. But, in fact, it does, because despite all the fruits present, it is not sweet like sherry; cooked fruit? Since it has a trace of saline on its pallet, it must be that mixture of salt and sweet hahaha. Anyway, I really liked it and would like to invest in a bottle.

Really good, very underrated, interesting malt whisky from (almost) the northernmost distillery. Great value for money. I adore this typical bourbon cask style, but this whisky is quite unique. I really enjoy the mixture of vanilla sweetness, sea saltiness and malty cereal. Well done Old Pulteney!
I bought this bottle at a UK supermarket for 25 pounds, as a drinking whisky while on holiday. I’m torn between two ways of looking at it. Part of me says ‘wow, I can’t believe they manage to sell this for 25 pounds.’ But then I can’t help but wonder what this would be like if the distiller scrapped the bottom 20% of casks, added the same amount of good casks on top and bottled it at 46%. As a fan of Pulteney, I would not mind paying close to double for that. However, it's great that the supermarket whisky buyer on a limited budget has access to this - a proper single malt by any measure.

Soft, no prickle. Distillery character at display. Sweet and sour, salty. Initially there’s initially a slightly ‘off’ sourness to it but that lifts with time . Evidence of both really good and some inferior bourbon casks in the mix. Orange and Apricot marmalade, honey, sea salt. Lots of fudge and a bit of caramel. Some rather youthful oak spice. Fresh apples and citruses with floral honeysuckle. Beautiful honeyed malt. I think you’ll have a hard time finding better quality for the little you’re paying for this. |

Sweet, spicy and salty. The texture is rather light but round, and not without oiliness, good stuff. Classic Pultney sea salt throughout the palate, with soft malt, lots of honey and fresh citrus fruit. Super soft cinnamon and orange marmalade with peel. The wood spice increases in the development and has a youthful free to it, which makes me wonder if the distiller has used virgin oak to make up for some tired casks. |

Old early favourite, a budget easy sipper for summer holidays. A gentle citrusy sea brine salty, cut grass, vanilla, apple pears biscuits and malty. Side by side with Flotilla at 46 %, the difference is really noticeable. The extra 6 % provides the old time sea saltiness I seem to remember in the 12. The modern version appears more muted and toned down on the famous sea saltiness. Unfortunately I won’t be replacing this one until the 12 comes out with at least 46%. Still it’s a good beginner whisky.

Basic whisky. Old Pulteney is not exactly a top whisky, but I was happy to add to my education. Basically the same as the 10 si that I'm trying in the next glass. Light vanilla whisky. Classic. Honey, some flowers, biscuit. For my taste, watery and a little more bitter than I would like. I won't buy a bottle and if I don't come across it again, I won't miss it.
My first experience with Old Pulteney, nice whisky. I expected her to be somewhat simpler, lighter, with no great expression. I was pleasantly surprised by the density and sweet tones. For easy drinking, why not?

Vanilla consistently, malt, sweet, slightly coastal with a hint of caramel. Classic and unchanged over a decade.
First time trying OP, and... what a weird whisky... For 44 euros in my pricey location totally acceptable these days, but this would rank considerably higher if it was in the 30-euro range. For 44 euros, I'd rather buy CB Orchard House or pay a little bit more for a 1L bottle of Glen Grant Cask Haven. I actually prefer this a little bit reduced to about 37%, the nose is a bit more well structured and the palate gets a little less alcoholic, fitting in with the mass market presentation.

Fairly fruity-sweet, but «maritime» is indeed the best word. Not phenolic or overly smoky, just a very peculiar maritime nose: damp wood, fishing nets and sea breeze, boiled fish skins, lightly sooty as well. Other than that pretty normal and sanitized: juicy, fruity, creamy, also a bit citrus fresh (and metallic). Barley sugars, honey and vanilla, apricots and juicy apples with a lime tang. Some tropical fruit and chocolate hints, definitely rubbery (new tires). After a good hour and at the tail end of the glass, a slightly disgusting plasticine note. Definitely a unique nose, I'm eager to try a better presented and older official bottling (15 or 16 year-old @46%). |

Considerably mouth-coating for the meek 40/37% (and chill-filtered). Not as maritime as the nose, even though it is considerably saltier here. Again honey and fruity sweetness, a bit sour as well with more varied citrus notes (fresh tangerine), spicier too. Still some softer fish-like notes following the nose and a damp wood aroma pervading the whole thing. Quite decent. |

Short to medium-short, a bit boring but still okay. Very simple and forgettable, especially after the uniqueness of the nose and palate (for a mass product). Considerably alcoholic here. A bit of industrial caramel, toasted malt and honey, soft spices and a faint chocolate note. The maritime character does not show up here, unfortunately. This would be better, I think, as a 30-euro 10 year-old, or as a more expensive cask strength 12-year old. |

2nd review after finishing the bottle. This review is an average after 9 drams since december 2023. I really enjoyed this bottle, interestingly different this distillery it seems. My first impression was Talisker but without the peat. The bottle is now empty and I liked it enough to put it on my buy again list. I am also looking forward to other expressions of the distillery. Old Pulteney 12YO Category: Single Malt Producer and bottler: Old Pulteney Distillery (Inver House Distillers) Region: Highlands Fortress: 40% Volume: 700 ml Bottling date: 03/11/2021 Barrel type: ex-Bourbon Min. age: 12 years old Filtration: done Dye: yes Nose. Subtle, delicate, fresh, medium intensity sea breeze aroma with hints of flower honey, salted butter, lemon-orange peel, fresh pineapples, bananas, apples and pears, cigarette ash, perfume, vanilla and ginger. Taste. Very light, slightly watery, but well-balanced taste with a silky creamy texture, in which there was a place for honey-fruity sweetness, citrus sourness, salty sea and sulphurous character, and a slight drying ginger-pepper, hoppy bitterness. Aftertaste. Dry. A short. Ginger, hops, sulfur, salt. Conclusion. The sea wave washed a plate left by someone on the northern island with cuts of various tropical fruits. An interesting combination. An interesting, memorable, complex malt with its own style, but all the wonderful flavor and aroma indicators, unfortunately, for the sake of commercial gain, are at a rudimentary, superficial level and are not fully disclosed. Pulteney 12 was a game-changer for me in the early part of the malt journey. VERY zesty citrus fruits, green apples, hint of smoke, ocean, and vanilla create an almost pineapple-like aroma combination that takes me to the sunny shores of Hawaii. All of this continues lightly in the pallet with an oaky note. The aftertaste is dry salty, slightly smoky, and VERY bitter, making it very much a maritime malt. A great appealing scent is inviting but the bitterness of the finish is challenging for sure. Interesting combination. 80 points.
