Pleasant enough, but a bit of a trifle where the notes compete for attention, rather than working together. Well worth trying.
Нос 82 The nose reminds me of peanut butter with an earthy note thrown in, quiute hard to pick a predominant aroma.
Вкус 82 The mouthfeel is pleasant, the taste is fruity, but then turns slightly sour with a big hit of spice coming through afterwards.
Финиш 80 The finish has a note of red grapes coming through -there is also a slight sweetness.

Leading Lady I think you can safely say that I am a fan of Nc'nean. I've tasted the first ten batches and it's become a bit of a daily sipper. So accessible and pleasantly priced that I can drink it daily without any problems. But they recently launched the so-called Quiet Rebels series – an ode to the distillery's employees, each time vatting something special – and start with the distillery’s leading lady: Annabel Thomas. In addition to the classic bourbon and STR casks, she now also chose Tokaji and sherry casks. Tokaji is the oldest type of wine made in Hungary. Very excited to try this. Nice nose! Sweet on red fruit and melon, but also some peach and apricot come peeking around the corner. That's followed by some herbal notes that give it real depth: camphor, candied ginger and some sage. Patience! It's not done yet. Some sweet sandwich dough appears, along with a touch of mustard seeds and a leaf of mint. Amusing and tasty. It starts off friendly and sweet, just like the 'regular' batches, but that is soon drowned out by the wood's spicy notes. Pepper, ginger, tannin... but in a good dose so that the malt tastes spicy without becoming oaky. Fine piece of craftsmanship. Some jam of quince and dried apricots appear, supplemented with a late touch of cloves. Gets nice and warm, mind you. The finish is softly drying and nicely spicy. Ginger and black pepper. Red fruit on the deathbed, along with a hint of origin chocolate and even some pale rum. The picture is perfect once again. Revolutionary packaging, fair price, good story and excellent whisky. Kudos!

Malty and young on the nose, intense fruit notes of pear, lemon and mango, fresh herbs, grape sugar and a light note of wine, muesli with a spoonful of honey. Nice nose but you should like "young" malts - a little sweeter and a little bit more herbaceous than the "standard" batches, but there is a certain similarity. Nc'nean has a very promising and unique character. The taste is even sweeter with a lot of honey and grape sugar. The alcohol tingles a bit but provides intense aromas. Cereal muesli with candied lemon pieces, caramel, vanilla sugar and a little oak. At the back you can feel the herbs again and a subtly spicy oak. Very pleasant and full - unfortunately very young - there is also a slightly alcoholic and metallic youth. This is particularly annoying at the end of the medium-long finish. Stronger and more aromatic than the standard bottling, but somehow the "batches" appear more mature and have a stronger character of their own. Hence a pure collector's bottle for fans of the distillery. If you really want to get to know Nc'nean, you should take the standard. The high ratings can be explained by secondary market sellers and unfortunately the base is powerless against it. It only helps to educate people through reviews.

It's good, sure... for a three-year-old. It's actually not worth the issue price. But the flavor profile is definitely an asset in the whisky world. For the full review, go here: https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2022/01/23/oefter-mal-was-neues/

A very unusual young whisky, where, in addition to the classic notes of a rough diamond (Duchess and lollipops), you can also hear interesting notes of floral-woody perfumery, vanilla. What is also unusual is that I did not feel the beer notes of bread and yeast in the aroma, but I felt the notes of beer in the taste. The main conclusion: young and requires additional languishing in barrels. 19 20 19 19

This is the first Nc'nean I've tasted and I'm already looking forward to what's to come in the years to come. A very promising bottling in an extremely beautiful bottle and with a very pleasingly high drinking strength.
Нос 85 The first impression is very fruity and malty. Summer flower meadow, honey, toffee, vanilla, ripe pears, a pleasant hint of mint, lemon zest, red grapes.
Вкус 85 Nice strong start, tingling, peppery. Salty caramel, citrus notes, beeswax, pears, apples, garden herbs, fine oak spice.
Финиш 83 Medium length finish, very slightly oily, also slightly dry. Cornflakes, espresso, pear.

A wonderful documentary ran on Arte, which focuses on the founder of the distillery, Annabel Thomas (here on Youtube). The distillery focuses on sustainability, organic farming, renewable energy and recycling in packaging and bottles. That sets standards. And the distillery is not only managed by a woman and bears the name of a Gaelic goddess - it is also important to have a high proportion of women among the employees and managers of the distillery. A series of bottlings will be dedicated to the silent rebels, starting with a bottling selected by Annabel Thomas. Whiskys from ex-Tokaj sweet wine casks and ex-Bourbon casks are combined. www.glen-efze.de

I poured this as dram #2 on a blind “Holiday Mystery Whisky Advent Calendar.” Although Wales was not even an option for a potential source region, I plowed ahead with my wrongness. I guessed this was a no-age-statement Penderyn. I felt that no matter what it was, it would be something I had never tried before. I was correct on that last count; I have never tried anything from NcʻNean! The distillery began production in 2017, joining the generation of scotch whisky distilleries that opened during the long boom. While this particular release was not really to my taste— it definitely came off as a bit young and unpolished— I cannot wait to see what this spirit is like with a lengthier maturation. There were some promising elements between the fruit, cream, and herbal layers here. Mental Image: Movie Theater Candy Display

the typical Nc'Nean profile from the previous batches somehow resonates (fruitiness), but you can clearly see the influence of the other barrels (sherry and tokaji). On the nose it is emphasized fruity and gradually sweeter; significantly more complex than the "normal" batches. The taste is then quite malty, sweet, peppery and spicy, ending with dark chocolate. Yes, the aftertaste isn't forever, but you can't expect that with 3-4 years of a non-smoky malt. They did that really well. In my opinion, the additional barrels are really good for the malt, especially those who like sweet malts. [91 - 87 = extremely tasty] - yes, I like Nc'Nean, but apart from the pink and red glasses, this is a remarkable work by a three to four year old malt. And no, I am not selling my two bottles ... it fits my taste profile exactly. What the base sellers / bottle flippers pull off, however, is unfortunately a knockout. Unfortunately there are far too many and I'm also upset about their reviews. The prices that are called do not match the malt; the RRP of 70/80 euros was fair to ambitious, and it is not worth more! Please do not buy this malt overpriced at these fancy prices. A little tip for those who haven't got a bottle: take a normal batch (e.g. the 6), add about 3 ml of Moscatel Sherry (= 6%) to 5 cl, leave the whole thing to harmonize, then you have about this one paints here.
Нос 90 initially malty, then immediately very fruity: yellow / red apples, partly floury; Plums and raisins. A certain (fruit) sweetness resonates, but is not extreme; The sweetness is becoming more and more present and the Tokaji barrels put their stamp on it. Caramel, vanilla (vanilla croissants), forest and blossom honey come with a bit of a delay. I also have associations with chocolate (40/50% cocoa chocolate, not dust-dry, but not milk chocolate either). If you have enough time to breathe, you also have a slight acidity (grape acidity) in the background, but this is really very minimal.
Вкус 89 malty, peppery flavor, but subsides again; then the fruity component opens up immediately. Then it looks quite sticky and sweet in the mouth. Slight, tart notes of dark chocolate appear. Second sip: even sweeter, stickier, the peppery flavor is no longer so strong. Again, fruity, like in the nose.
Финиш 86 the oak tannins are there, tart notes of dark chocolate also stick to the tongue. Overall medium to long-lasting (with the second / third sip).

Overall I like it, but the batches are better in hiding it's age with a stronger cask influence. Update: A few drops water are doing wonders, it sharp alcohol and its younger side gets less aggressive and overall it is much fruitier. two points extra in finish, one point extra for the taste
Нос 85 This is unmistakably a Nc´Nean, Compared to the ´regular´ batches, it is less sweet and more spirit-driven. There is barley, bread, cookie-dough and some grassy notes. The alcohol can't hide it's actual age.
Вкус 87 Oh this is a surprise, much fruitier than expected. At first, a brief moment of alcohol, afterwards pears, apricots, candied ginger, chicory.
Финиш 84 Spicy, the alcohol gets stronger, some bitter notes, white pepper, hints of ripe exotic fruits.

Orchard and tropical fruits, salt, herbal tea, honey, ginger, pepper, sugared dougnut, maybe even some berries. Youthful but also quite characterful. Improves significantly with time and air in the bottle.

Nc'nean Quiet Rebels Annabel 48.5%. 30ml sample at home, Nov 2021. Pale golden orange. Aroma has some 'tired' oak initially, maybe even a little vegetal, faintly chocolatey, fruit 'n' nut chocolate and Turkish Delight, a little white wine-like peachiness. Maybe slight strawberry (covered in chocolate). Can’t say I was expecting that chocolate note. Mostly chocolate buttons with hints of fruit and tired oak. Taste is clean and easy, sort of ‘milky’ and vaguely minerally like limestone (not that I've ever eaten limestone), the spirit really doesn’t have a rough edge up-front although the heat does show up as a big salty crescendo on the swallow. Some vague fruity esters towards the finish but always quite basic, minerally and salty. I have been very impressed by my first experiences of Nc'Nean ... but this one not so much. The lovely Nc'Nean spirit isn’t shining through, the cask influence isn’t that appealing, and the flavours aren’t that cohesive. A bit of a shame, but it’s not a bad whisky really. Below average though, in my book. 3.125/75 Despite the abv already being low, I added a drop of water out of interest. With water and a wait the aroma becomes more crystalline and less chocolatey. More of the white wine note appears. Also pork with apple sauce. Taste is now super soft. The depth of flavour has dropped out but the soft flavours are suited to the lower abv. I didn’t save much of my dram for water adulteration – not enough to dissect and describe the flavours adequately - but I feel as though I would have enjoyed this more if it were bottled at a slightly lower strength. Benefit of the doubt score : 3.4/81

Нос 87 Very nice nose for a young age The alcohol is very well integrated for a young age group. Peanuts with tropical fruits in the background Pleasant, fresh citrus notes Slightly earthy and vanilla Minimal wine notes After some time in the glass, fresh herbs or tea herbs are taken out of the glass. The whisky is very complex, with no single note being immediately prominent; instead, everything blends together seamlessly.
Вкус 88 Very nice here too. Initially, the tropical fruits really come through beautifully. Vanilla is added along with a lovely apricot. Then the youthful character comes through somewhat, but by no means as one would imagine in a 3-year-old whisky (pepper and ginger). Finally, the peanuts are served with a lovely fresh calendula ointment. Slightly charcoal-like notes accompany the ending.
Финиш 87 Medium Slightly peppery with hints of tropical fruits Vanilla and the subtle oak

Quietly does it It’s been hard to ignore the Nc’nean distillery output over the last few years. Bottle aside, which is a work of art and should be applauded for taking whisky branding and packaging in a brave and exciting new direction, I think the product is some of the best and most worthwhile young scotch out there from the slew of new, home grown distilleries. Their Batch One was solidly put together and tasted better than it’s youthfulness would suggest and with each successive batch, they just got better; Batch Five was a belter imo. And it has a recognisable house style too. The Dr.Swan DNA is there, the wine casks and STR staves techniques marries well with the fruity new make and the result is a scotch which is delicious, rich for its age, vibrant and, if not complex, then full of interesting flavours and odours and all wrapped up in a pleasantly oily texture. It’s a bloody good start in my book. So, as the distillery ages and grows and the halo of batch one fades, it’s important to keep the interest in the brand going, great core expressions only go so far these days. The collector/speculator is always on the hunt for the next great white whale. And so, like Bruichladdich’s valinch series, Nc’nean have launched their Quiet Rebels. Enough waffle. Get in my glass. Nose it and it’s a pungent affair. There’s a lot going on and it’s one of those inviting noses that keeps you whacking your beak back into the glass time and time again to work out what is going on. Initially I got a fist full of doughy, bready notes mingles with pickled ginger and some sage. Hot sawn oak, mustard seed, then pungent wine notes, that flush of a red wine like heat and red fruits, sweet, syrupy melons and other yellow fruits, some camphor and a sauterne-like wine note in the mix. Strangely it sounds from the description it should be a sweet nose but, the whole is far more spicy and dry and edges towards a neutral, bitter wood aspect with dry peppermint far in the background. It’s quite a complicate affair to be sure and over half an hour in the glass it really does jump about. It’s worth spending time with the nose on this one. (EDIT: As another also pointed out - there is a Tonka bean thing to this whisky, very interesting). In the mouth and it’s a surprisingly like the nose. The sweetness arrives up front and then is joined very quickly by wood and ginger and pepper and red wine like soaked wood note, candied ginger syrup, toasted oak is like the backbone in the mix, sitting behind every flavour. Sweet, hot peppery, oaky, lovely amounts of ginger, red apples, greengages arrive. The Tokaji barrels also become more noticeable on the palate as you have a few more drams, it’s very enjoyable feeling as this this presence grows, it feels like a perfect pairing to the distillate’s fruity character. Going back to the nose after a good few sips and you think there is a sulphur note to it (like Higland Park), quince jam on burnt toast and some feint bbq meatiness, there’s also a rum agricole thing going on. And clove oil. Mmmm. It’s very warming and, if not perfectly composed, it is complex and interesting and certainly perfect for cold winter days. It makes me think this is the kind of whisky that begs to be added to a cup of mulled wine - it just seems a natural fit. Finish is big and spicy and drying and rich with flavours. The ginger and oak and red fruit all flap about amusingly, there’s a certain chocolate and raspberry bush note that appears more at the end than is obvious at any other point and a little black pepper. It’s young and fighty but not to its detriment. If anything it tastes like a a dram of possibilities. It’s daring and interesting and equally one worth sharing as one worthy of sitting and chewing over for a few hours when the family has gone to sleep and your after an hour of sanity. So. Quiet Rebels. Obviously a flippers delight as is anything that is first in a series but from a drinkers perspective this is an exciting whisky from a ‘new’ distillery. It’s not easy by most standards but also not forgettable either. It’s well worth tracking down if you can get it for under £100 as I think it shows the intention of a new distillery to take risks and play the game their way. ‘The squeaky wheel gets the oil’, as they say. Sometimes deservedly so.

A whisky that honestly surprised me in a positive way and that is very easy to drink. It is of course too expensive - even for the introductory price - and unfortunately hardly offers any outlet. The youth of the whisky is already well covered by apparently decent casks.
Нос 87 Bright fruit basket, but also with older red apples and ripe pears. kitchen herbs. Hay. Light berry notes with some acidity in the background.
Вкус 88 Young strawberries and currants with some acidity. A wonderful malt note. A light but good sherry note. Very light spice and some (little) sharpness.
Финиш 85 Unfortunately hardly available. Some young oak, herbs and spices. Actually not worth mentioning and hardly a rating, but less than 85 points here would discredit the very decent whisky too much.

This whisky from an independent distillery opened in 2017 by Annabel, who moved to the west coast of Scotland from London, spent four years raising funds to produce an organic whisky that would exist in harmony with the planet. Only organic barley and renewable energy are used in production, and the whisky is bottled in 100% recycled glass. The 17-person team is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint. This release was released in 2021 as part of the Quiet Rebels Annabel series. The spirits were matured in ex-bourbon, Tokaj, STR, and sherry casks. Bottled at a respectable 48.5% abv, it has a natural presentation. Nose: Slightly tart, tart, caramel-fruity aromas. Burnt sugar, vanilla, tart chokeberry, elderberry, varnish, red apple peel, apple jam, dark chocolate, herbaceous notes, black pepper, cloves, ginger, and plenty of young tannins. Palate: The initial taste is quite tart, spicy, and peppery. Fruity sweetness, apple jam, burnt caramel, grapefruit peel, black pepper, menthol, coffee bitterness, cracked apple pit, fruit tree resin, and lots of oak. Finish: Warming, astringent, tart, sweet-fruity, spicy and very tannic Balance: a young, slightly over-tanned, spicy, fruity-caramel whisky. For now, it's nothing more than a curious experiment with an unusual blend of casks. Best of luck to this young, innovative distillery, which is pursuing its own unique path without regard for its competitors. N21, P21, F20, B19
