Молодой Ben Nevis из олоросских хересных бочек: насыщенный херес, сушёные фрукты, чёрная лакрица и «грязноватый» характер винокурни, пряная сухость. Опытные ценят фруктовость и питкость (85–93), скептики винят молодость, резкий спирт и перебор хереса.

В аромате — плотные хересные ноты (сушёные абрикосы, инжир, финики, тёмные ягоды, вишня), карамель и ваниль, кожа, табак, жареный солод и характерная для винокурни «грязца» с минеральными, серными и мясными оттенками; у части образцов проскакивает лёгкий дым и имбирная пряность. Вкус пряно-сладкий с быстрым переходом в сухость: перец, гвоздика, чёрная лакрица, дубовая пряность, тёмный шоколад и кофе, солёные и травяные ноты, красные фрукты и мёд; спирт при 46% нередко бьёт резко и не всегда интегрирован, вода отчасти смягчает. Послевкусие среднее, суховатое, вяжущее — обугленный дуб, зола, перец, кожа, красные фрукты. Опытные ревьюеры в целом благосклоннее (85–87, отдельные восторги до 93 за «фруктовый парад» и питкость как «вечернюю терапию»), но и среди них есть строгие оценки (74, 84) за пряную резкость и переизбыток бочки. Остальные расходятся сильнее: одни хвалят соотношение цены и качества и «хересную бомбу», другие снижают за молодость, громкий херес, заглушающий характер винокурни, резкий спирт, перечную остроту и клеевые/травянистые ноты (73–76, 80). Общий разброс широк, но медиана держится около 85–86, и сходятся почти все на том, что дистиллят добротный, а бочке недостало ещё нескольких лет, чтобы уравновесить херес и удлинить послевкусие.

There may not be a lot of Ben Nevis here, but a noticeable amount of Oloroso Sherry Butt, but this whisky is really tasty to drink, you can and should! A good medicine for therapy at the end of the day!) 22 22 20 21 85

Very solid dram. Round and earthy. Very light marzipan and nougat. It gets spicy in the mouth, at 46%. But very good PLV. 71-80 – Fine, like to drink by time

Нос 86 A bit dirty, but luckily without any sulfur. Overpowering notes of Dutch black liquorice, salty, anise, herbal, coriander, slight menthol, mint, juicy red berries, dried apricots and figs, leathery with a hint of coal gas.
Вкус 84 More black spicy liquorice, salt, herbs, mint, anise, sweet on juicy red fruits and a little honey, some cherries as well here and the berries and dried fruits from the nose. Some dark chocolate and a spiciness of clove and black pepper with some ginger in the background
Финиш 82 Medium to long: more salty black liquorice, some sweet honey notes, red fruit syrup, spice and minty herbs, drying on clove, black pepper and charred oak notes.

A bottling from Signatory, which is bottled in a slightly higher quality decanter. It is an 8-year-old Ben Nevis that matured in Oloroso Sherry Butts. For the 8 years, the whisky has a beautiful dark amber color, but it is not overly dark. It is likely to be a batch bottling from several butts, there is no information on the number of bottles. In spring 2024, the whisky will be available for just under €55. glen-efze.de

Ben Nevis seems to be a distillate that tastes solid even when young, but you'll feel the age in the finish. Grading this bottle, I'd like to give it a higher score but the youthfulness does get to me a little and the sherry is just a bit too loud, so I decided to compare it to another slightly older whisky that has louder cask tastes today than before: Glendronach 15 bottled 2022. I gave that GD 85 points and I think its longer maturation helps even out the sherry and prolong the finish, so this Ben Nevis earns a solid 84. A fairly priced bottle.

Fortunately, the fear that it would be dominated by sherry does not come true, for me it is still Ben Nevis with the typical aromas of coriander, banana, lightly roasted and a dirty touch. The alcohol doesn't seem to be well integrated at first, especially on the palate, but it catches on. You can always add a little water. Reminds me a bit of the Ben Nevis 8J 2013-2022 bottled by Elixier Distillers (WID 224165) - February 15, 2024

Вкус 84 Malt sweetness, orange peel, dates, brown sugar, spicy, seems very mild at first but the alcohol flashes sharply for a moment, which seems a bit impetuous to me

Нос 87 Very intense sherry nose. Dirty BN character. Mineral and sulfurous. Musty. Roasted malt. Light vanilla. Caramel. Hints of tobacco and leather. Slightly meaty. Herbal and spicy notes. The BN character later takes over, followed by the Olorosso.
Вкус 89 Starts off bland and very mild. But it builds up pretty quickly! Lots of spicy wood. Dirty and musty (tart, herbal), but accompanied by intense fruit notes. Vanilla and caramel. Slightly meaty smoke from beech charcoal. Ash. Leather. Light sweetness accompanies (honey).
Финиш 84 Medium length. Wood with bitterness and a slight peppery aftertaste. Ashy smoke. Still a strong fruit body. But now also a hint of metallic youth.

love the beautiful, reddish colour… loads of Dutch, black licorice, old leather, musty notes of fermented grapes like it’s coming from a manzanilla cask… sour cherries and all sorts of red berries… more bitter-sweet than sweet and the spices are not too loud - nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper … not a good swimmer imo, loses the tartness and turns quickly flat.. burnt caramel where you can almost taste the char and medium dryness in the finish…

Нос 88 Sweet and sour fruit compote, earthy and spicy oak, pastries with butter and raisins. Caramel. A little water makes it sweeter and creamier. There is also a meaty and leathery note. Blackberries.
Вкус 86 Spicy-sweet start. Acid only in the background. Then quickly becomes quite dry with a little ash. Root infusion. Coffee with milk.
Финиш 84 Oak spice, raisins, cocoa. Short to medium length.

Výrazně suchá, kořenitá whisky. Kůže, dřevo, korek, lehká hořkost. V dozvuku taky dost suchá, dřevitá. Taková slušná old school whisky.

A quite interesting whisky, the taste doesn't live up to what the smell promises.
Нос 75 The whisky rises intensively in the nose, it starts sweet with sherry and banana, later becomes a bit dry.
Вкус 70 Campfire spreads surprisingly in the mouth, it continues sweet and fruity.
Финиш 75 The finish is medium-long, fluctuates between sweet and dry and is still somewhat smoky.

Sampled blind It has some distinctive character that isn’t completely obscured by the sherry. The beery flavor should have tipped me off, I suppose; it’s just so different from the older Ben Nevis that I’m more used to. It’s a little uneven, but pretty decent overall.

Вкус 85 Ginger, dark chocolate, cherries, dried plum, charred wood, orange peel.
Финиш 85 Medium length. Leathery, wet soil, slightly peppery, cranberry, berry acidity.

Decent malt with intense sherry cask influence. Distillery character is somewhat swamped by the casks and the whisky itself would benefit from spending a few more years in the casks, but still not bad. Ok-ish value for money considering current state of the market.
Нос 86 Intense sherry casks notes: nuts, dried fruits, balsamic vinegar, Worchester sauce, spices, wood. Significant alcohol prickling.
Вкус 84 Sherry cask domination. Palate mirrors the nose almost exactly. Rich sherried taste. Quite nippy and hot on the tongue and the throat. Fairly short development, moderately dense, slightly on the drier side. Water mellows it a bit.
Финиш 84 Medium in length. Well restrained tannins, nuts, leather, very subtle smoky notes.

I like Ben Nevis alot! It often has some mineralic touch. It pairs good with sherrywood-maturation. And this one is an good example for all this! Comes really close to the old 10-y-o

Lovely nose, light flavour in the mouth, nice but short finish. Color: Amber. Nose: A gentle, pleasant funk lingers with fresh fruits and vanilla. Mouth: Typical - a little warmth / spice, mild sweetness, gentle bitterness of chocolate. Finish: Short but yummy, with notes of sherry

Round, subtle smoke, great nutty aromas, dark fruits, earthy "dirty". Seems older than it actually is. Very good for the price of around 60 euros.

My current favorite whisky. Every time I try it I discover something new. Nose: Dirty, tobacco, dark sherry, coffee, dark pineapple (?) Taste: dirty, somewhat peaty, dark fruit, dirty sherry Finish: dates, oak, dark chocolate

I tried this Ben Nevis bottled by Signatory right after Ben Nevis 10 (OB from 2016). And it was quite a contrast. Where the Ben Nevis 10 had complexity and was well balanced from the nose to the taste and finish, this SV Ben Nevis missed the complexity and balance. Also the typical Ben Nevis funky dirty character was missing. The nose was sherried-ness foremost and the quintessential Ben Nevis character was secondary and subdued by the sherry (cask) aroma notes. The taste follows up what the nose suggested, yet quite one-dimensionally. Where the OB Ben Nevis 10 was multi layered and characterfull. Then when the sherried character fades, the drying bitter spiciness comes in strongly. And in my taste, too strong. This is exactly why I find this whisky unbalanced. On its own, this SV Ben Nevis isn’t bad and can be enjoyed if one is in the mood for a casual young-ish sherry cask matured whisky. But when compared to the OB Ben Nevis 10, it is nowhere near it.

Smokey smooth. An absolute delight. Depth from the Oloroso cask gives this whisky a decent kick but measured with a long after-taste
