Woody and spicy - quite drinkable

Mighty Since the acquisition of the Tamdhu Distillery by Ian Macleod Distillers in 2011 (they bought it from the Edrington Group, which had closed it the year before), they have worked hard to restore this Speysideer to a malt of prestige. And in the glass today is their 21-year-old, bottled in 2025. It matured in a combination of American and European oloroso sherry casks. The nose bursts with blueberries, but also plums and figs and a very pleasant slightly sweet and sour earthy note. Remarkable. Snuff, cola candies, cinnamon, gingerbread. There is a lot going on here and it is all exceptionally good. This continues beautifully on the tongue, where the whole is further embellished with rubber (the good kind), leather, nuts, and dark sweet notes like preserved raisins and fermented cherries. The wood also makes its presence felt, providing a lovely spiciness in the form of cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, and black pepper. A mighty flavor bomb! The finish is a trump card, believe me. Long, warm, spicy, and dark sweet. A liquid dessert. A mighty Tamdhu, but unfortunately very expensive with its price tag of around 300 EUR.

A modern sherry malt, but with noticeably more wood compared to other representatives on the current market. It's well made, but at around 300 euros it's far too expensive for what it offers. I (unfortunately) tasted it in direct comparison to a Glengoyne 25-year-old (old design in a wooden box), and it noticeably falls short. Yes, the Glengoyne costs around €150 more on the secondary market. If I were spending that much, I'd accept the extra cost; the Glengoyne is in a completely different league.

Der Tamdhu 21 Jahre zeigt sich von Anfang an sehr zugänglich und gleichzeitig erstaunlich tief. In der Nase wirkt er ruhig und ausgereift, ohne dabei schwer oder überladen zu sein. Dunkle Pflaumen und Blaubeeren geben direkt eine fruchtige Richtung vor, begleitet von einem angenehmen Eindruck von altem Holz – wie ein polierter Eichenschrank. Dazu kommen warme Gewürze, etwas Zimt und Tabak, die dem Ganzen eine leicht herbe, erwachsene Seite geben. Ein Hauch Pfeffer und etwas Schokolade runden das Bild ab. Am Gaumen startet er spürbar würzig, fast schon mit etwas Druck, wird dann aber schnell weicher und cremiger. Die Süße ist präsent, aber gut eingebunden. Rote Früchte und Kirschen treffen auf kandierte Orangen, dazu kommt eine deutliche Eiche, die Struktur gibt, aber nicht bitter wirkt. Noten von Keksteig bringen eine angenehme, leicht verspielte Süße hinein, während Leder und Nüsse für Tiefe sorgen. Der Pfeffer bleibt im Hintergrund erhalten und gibt dem Whisky eine konstante Würze. Der Abgang ist lang und bleibt vor allem würzig und süß. Dunkle Trockenfrüchte sind weiterhin präsent, dazu kommen etwas Kakao und nussige Noten. Die Gewürze ziehen sich durch und sorgen dafür, dass der Whisky langsam und angenehm ausklingt. Insgesamt ist das ein sehr ausgewogener und stimmiger Sherry-Whisky mit klaren, nachvollziehbaren Aromen. Die Kombination aus amerikanischen und europäischen Oloroso-Sherryfässern bringt sowohl Süße als auch Würze ins Glas, ohne dass eine Seite zu dominant wird. Er wirkt reif, rund und durchdacht. Kein lauter Whisky, sondern einer, der mit Ruhe, Tiefe und Balance überzeugt. Ein Dram, den man am besten in Ruhe genießt und der mit jeder Minute etwas mehr von sich zeigt.

Nase: Süß, Gewürze, dunkle Kirsche, Eiche, dunkle Trockenfrüchte, dunkle Vollmilch Schokolade | Geschmack: Süß, würzig, Eiche, dunkle Kirsche, dunkle Schokolade, Gewürze, dunkle Trockenfrüchte | Abgang: Mittellang bis lang; süße Noten, dunkle Trockenfrüchte, etwas dunkle Schokolade und Eiche bleiben. | Fazit: Die Nase beginnt süß mit vielen Gewürzen. Dunkle Kirsche und Eiche kommen dazu. Dunkle Trockenfrüchte und dunkle Vollmilch Schokolade folgen dann noch. Der Geschmack beginnt süß und würzig. Eiche und dunkle Kirsche kommen zusammen mit dunkler Schokolade. Gewürze und dunkle Trockenfrüchte sind außerdem noch da. Ein sehr leckerer und intensiver Whisky. Ein voller Körper. Fehlnoten habe ich keine. Der Alkohol passt sehr gut. Einfach toll zu genießen. | 89 Punkte

Tamdhu stands proud among them, and the 21 years old is no exception. An excellent and subtle sherried beast."

Medium deep fruity, woody. So spicy, but nice filled in mouth. Long fruity finish.
