[September, 2018] Burnside is a Balvenie single malt with an added teaspoon of Glenfiddich - but I am pretty sure this is by definition only and the folks at Balvenie do not take the effort to open the Balvenie casks and add the teaspoon of Glenfiddich, actually. If they just state it the acquirer of the cask has to market this as a blended malt (and not as a single malt Balvenie) anyhow to comply with the laws and that is all they want to achieve at Balvenie… ...so Burnside drams are a much cheaper way to enjoy the fine Balvenie single malt than to buy the mostly overpriced original bottlings. And this is a good example: A 26-years old Balvenie OB would easily trade for 400+ Eurobucks while I bought this one for 115 Euro - you see what I mean? It delivers what you might expect from an old Balvenie release - a complex, balanced and impressive dram that is very, very quaffable...
Нос 90 The colour is pale gold and the nose offers an interesting and complex profile of fine oils, nuts, honeys, summer floral and herbal aromas that I found with Balvenie drams only - so far. Quite unique and I like it for that! I am not sure if it is to everyone's liking because it is very old-stylish (or in other words: completely distillate-driven with very little wood influences).
Вкус 89 The taste is layered on fresh fruity, sugary and honey flavours first with floral and nutty notes following before the spicy woods kick in (without any bitter tannins). After some chewing a creamy delicious vanilla-toffee flavour pops up (like a créme brûlée without the caramelised sugar). No flaw that I can find (there are hardly any flaws in Balvenie drams, compared to other distilleries).
Финиш 89 The whisky arrives very charming on the palate with no distracting feeling but a fine coating effect. The finish is medium to long and adds some more spices and oils (I am not an oils expert but these I really like). At the very end the sugars try to dominate but they fail - the dram stays balanced until it fades, finally. Water releases more aromas in the nose and turns the dram more bubble gum-ish (like old Glencadam from the seventies) - depending on whether you like this or not you should reduce it or enjoy it neat (I enjoy it both ways, actually).

Wonderful, natural and yet elegant bottling. I would have loved to have a few bottles of this in my cellar.
Нос 91 Beautifully dense and waxy texture, wonderfully delicate floral-fruity aromas. Restrained barrel influence, lots of distillate character. Not overly complex, but extremely round, well-matured and delicious.
Вкус 88 Tart and sweet at the same time, if that makes sense. On the one hand limestone, grapefruit and a little quinine, on the other hand meadow flowers, orchard fruit and malt. Quite peppery though despite the low alcohol content - even with water!
Финиш 89 Oily and dense, with orange honey and candied citrus fruits.

Direct comparison with sister barrel no. 7378 which was also distilled on October 30, 1991. The two bourbon barrels thus spent a good 26 years side by side in the same warehouse: This bottling is the clear winner because it is fuller, rounder, fruity and not a bit dry. Ingenious bottling !!

A nice, but above all exciting sample exactly to my liking and from a sample exchange with Wummy - thank you very much! This is supposed to be a Teaspoon Balvenie. Given the slightly salty flavors I sometimes find in Glenfiddich, I wouldn't be surprised if this is actually a blend of Balvenie and even a little more than a teaspoon of Glenfiddich. It was only last year that I really, really appreciated Balvenie for this neat craftsmanship and I've actually never come across a really wet or over-finished barrel. (To be honest, I only tried a few standard bottlings from Balvenie). Nevertheless, I can now at least understand why Balvenie is located in the upper price segment. But I haven't had such an old bourbon maturation from Balvenie either. Relatively unspectacular, but a lot of quality, cleanliness and structure - just the kind of whiskey I like. The price of currently around 250 euros is just about justified in 2023. Gets more exciting with time in the glass and is one of those "sloppy whiskeys" that get better with every dram.
Нос 91 In the blender glass, a beautifully balanced nose with powdered sugar, some vanilla, hardly any wood for the age, fruity Granny Smith apple and also a very light fruity note in the background that smells of candied ginger and pineapple. Everything so harmonious and round - how can you not find that fantastic and at the same time even exciting?
Вкус 89 89.5 The palate starts out a bit lighter and woodier and with a slight bitterness of grapefruit (pomelo). Then the maturity of a 26-year-old bourbon maturation spreads and this is where the strength of Balvenie comes into play again: those clean, harmonious aromas. Slightly slopes down to the nose and also shows a slight difference to the nose, but is still exciting and unconventional.
Финиш 90 The mouthfeel is slightly salty, tingling, then lots of fructose and everything just slightly oily. Nevertheless, the finish - without being heavy - is long and full-bodied.

I expected a bit more. It´s not a bad dram at all but I really prefer a good cask of the 12y single barrel Balvenie! Wait,...yeah just took a sip of the 12er. More to my liking, indeed!
Нос 86 Almost a little shy in the beginning, slightly sharp, still not aggressive. Smells younger than 26. To be honest it smells totally young. Must have been almost dead casks. Spirity. Fruity on apricot and yellow apples. Some honey, vanilla. Sunflower seeds. Well that´s it I am afraid. It´s nice but lacks complexity on the nose.
Вкус 88 Much better on the palate with a good punch, orchard fruits, again the apricots. Nice honey, grassy, slightly malty.
Финиш 88 Medium, clean, grassy. a little ginger.

Had hoped for more, which does not mean that I have here a bad whiskey in front of me. The barrel was probably already quite exhausted, despite 26 years of maturity no barrel-typical flavors / bitter substances. Positively worded: here you get a genuine, well-matured Balvenie at a fair price!
Нос 87 Ripe bright fruits, hay flowers, nuts, nutmeg, licorice
Вкус 87 a bit spicy at first, then very sweet very quickly, flowery-nutty, lots of vanilla, caramel
Финиш 86 medium; the sweetness becomes increasingly dry, nutty-spicy aromas accompany the finish

Color: pale straw Tasted with "The Huntly" 1997 DT and Burnside 1999 AD Old and mature, has already lost a little character, yet great and dangerously tasty.

Tasted from a Glencairn glass. Tasted neat! What a lovely Burnside. I think more than a teaspoon of Glenfiddich was added, as I already detected that Glenfiddich note on the nose. On the palate, however, a beautiful array of fruits and vanilla sugar emerged. Truly delightful.
Нос 87 On the nose, I initially get a light Glenfiddich note, immediately followed by honey, vanilla, sugared peach, and a hint of old, dusty, slightly damp forest floor. The alcohol is superbly integrated.
Вкус 88 On the palate, that Glenfiddich note from the nose lingers. Then come notes of honey, pineapple, peach, lots of vanilla and vanilla sugar, light roasted aromas, and again a hint of damp forest floor or mushroom soil. The alcohol is well integrated.
Финиш 87 The finish is medium to long. Towards the end, there are lovely roasted aromas and a lingering hint of vanilla sugar.

Dense apple on the nose, with vanilla and caramel. Tingling on the tongue, some cinnamon and ginger. In addition citrus. A little tropic with coconut and pineapple. Pulsating. Slightly tart finish, lemon preserved in sugar. Insane PLV for today.
