An incredibly round and relaxed nose. ADOS? No. Not a punch, but very harmonious and rather delicate. A light fruitiness. A touch of marzipan. A hint of apple. Even baked apple. Quite elegant. Later, the orange peel, as mentioned by the law firm. |

A surprising sweetness at first... cinnamon? Then the strength becomes noticeable (not the alcohol). Invigorating, and well-balanced. |

A touch of sweetness. A hint of peat? The sweetness lingers. |

Westering home and a song in the air! Independent Bunnahabhain bottlings can be a bit hit or miss, despite the often-repeated claim that 'Bunna always delivers'. In the end, it’s one of those cases where you really have to taste for yourself. Deep amber in colour, with a rich, almost viscous sheen. On the nose, it starts nutty before opening into fine chocolate, salted caramel and pipe tobacco. Then a generous layer of dried fruits, dates and figs, joins in, alongside brown sugar and a faint, coastal hint of peat. Quite dense, very well composed. On the palate, it’s smooth with a nicely oily texture. Notes of aged brandy and spiced oak, cinnamon and clove, set the tone, followed by café au lait and dark cocoa. There’s also a distinct impression of orange liqueur, something along the lines of Grand Marnier over slightly bitter orange zest, which adds a nice element. The finish is long and warming, again driven by dried fruits and gentle oak spice. A subtle cocoa note lingers and everything stays in balance without tipping into bitterness or unpleasant dryness. In many ways, this is the composed 'big brother‘ to the recent 18yo Bunnahabhain for Friendly Mr. Z (WB293220), albeit one with a bit of a smoking habit. The smoky influence is what stands out in particular here. It is very subtle, finely integrated, and more of a quiet undertone than a defining feature. Whether this comes from heavy cask charring or an early 'Margadale-style‘ peaty Bunna distillate is hard to pin down, but after all this time it definitely adds a lovely layer of complexity. Towards the very end, a few subtle, sweet, almost fresh fruity notes appear and round things off nicely. All in all, a very convincing Bunna. Complex, well-balanced, and pretty characterful. Dark, cooked berries Beautiful wood spice Some leather and tobacco I don't know if I'm imagining it, but I think I can taste a hint of smoke. Beautiful long finish
