A sample courtesy of karloff. I'm raising this in honor of the recently passed comedian Sean Lock, and I think it was quite suitable for the occasion. It is just as "in your face" unapologetic as he was.

Right off the bat you get the alc fumes telling you to go slow with this one. I think the peat has a slight overhand on the nose. Maybe because there are plenty of other things that normally follow, smoked ham and rubber. Although the rubber is not the tire tube type, it's more Wellingtons. But the dark fruits of sherry are also present, and it's quite sweet. I gave it a dab of water, maybe a few drops more than karloff recommend, and the peat resides a little and there is more wood, dark berries and espresso. |

Oily thick arrival. Not as spicy as I would have thought, in small sips this is fully drinkable as is. Unlike the nose I think the sherry is in front on the palate. The peat arrives late as the spice builds a little. After adding water the spice cooled down rapidly and I feel there's more balance in the peat/sherry mix. |

Fairly long, it sticks well. At first spice and peat, then a little dry sherry. Dies on a bed of sweet raspberries. One of few drams where I feel water extends the finish. It's all toned down a little, but sits around longer. Unfortunately the raspberries drowned. |

Tasted at Whisky in Leiden 2019. I quite like Benromach, and had already quite a few (15+) of their expressions and so far never had a bad one. Till now that is. Looking at the scores of others I really wonder if we had the same dram. But still on a second occasion it still was just not good at all in my book. too heavy on the sherry cask, with lots of burned and rubber notes. This with just an unpleasant smoke and citric acidity... it finished also too dry and bitter.

As good, or maybe even better than I hoped. Peat and sherry is a proven combination, although not always executed well. That is not the case here. Once word gets out, I've no doubt that this'll fly of the shelves.

marmelade on the nose. the peat combined with the sherry sweetness is just amazing. this is the exact type of dram i love most.

a nice whisky, where surprisingly not only the sherry is in charge. The fire is still very noticeable. I like that. Ansonten but it is rather a more direct malt, yummy, but today at least he does not tempt me to taste flavor.

Blind mystery tasting. Decent value for money but I found it a little brash myself.

I've had the normal version of this and for that little extra I would go for this one because if you experiment with water it opens up in different ways. I didn't take it over six drops of water but each to their own.

This is rather meaty and fruity at the same time, like you have walked past the cooked meat counter then straight past the desserts. Ginger beer and herbs. With four drops of water I get more ginger and coffee. Six drops, plus two from the four, you get old leather and wood. |

At 59.9% it is drinkable but only to the seasoned drinker. Looking at how dark this is it is obviously first fill. Quite thick and chewy. As far as the balance is concerned it's not bad for such a strength. With four drops of water it gives the spice a kick up the arse. With six drops the peat is more dominant. |

The finish is long and the peat is more dominant than the sherry notes and they both fade out quite nicely. With four drops of water the spice chases them off. With six drops it's a three horse finish. |

COLOUR: amber (without dye) - since Benromach is a bit smoky anyway, this one falls especially "smoky" not sooo smoky - yes smoke is definitely present but not much more than with the normal (at least older) Benromach - better than the Cask Strength Batch 1 and 2

Based on some of the comments here I expected a terrible whisky, but it's sort of ok. On the other hand it isn't very spectacular either. It's also still around €70, which is a ridiculous amount of money for such an average whisky. Edit april '21: this bottle has been open for 1.5 years with still one third left, but it's going down hill fast right now (and it wasn't much to begin with). Taste and finish are sulphury, very sharp and extremely dry at this point. Initially I scored it 80, currently it's struggling for 75 (77 as an average).

Sherry sweetness, dried fruits, quite meaty and nutty with salted peanut and macadamia. Also some smoke and spiciness, but way less than expected. In the background there's something rubbery, though nothing too extreme. |

The peat smoke becomes a bit more pronounced, which is a good thing. However, the weird rubber note also starts shifting to the front, almost like chewing a bicycle tube. A high abv, so very spicy and tasting a bit too rough and young; it needs (lots of) water. Still, the sherry notes remain somewhat vague and the peppery spiciness very dominant. To me this clearly is the weakest part of this whisky. |

Long and incredibly drying with an alcoholic feel to it: a swift syrupy sweetness, chili peppers and some rubbery liquorice, espresso and toasted wood notes. |
