[October, 2000] I had this dram during a Port Ellen rarities tasting at Rolandsbogen. In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 87,5 points. My notes state it needs a fair share of water to open up. By the way, at this tasting you could buy this excellent Port Ellen bottling for 189 Deutschmark (95 Euro), or this breath-taking Brora https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/2388/brora-1981-tb for just 10 Deutschmark more (99 Euro).
My first and only port Ellen and then just such a dream! One of the best whiskys I have ever tasted.
A fantastic combination. Maybe a tiny touch of too harsh oak. Otherwise a dream fabric.
Re-tasting after approx. 8 years: Strong sherry on the nose. old sherry It looks dirty, with a decent sulfur note. What kind of REFILL(?) barrel was that? Hammer, what the thing gave off for intense aromas. Smoke comes through here, therefore, only minimally. The spicy aromas from the wood overlay everything. deep and complex. Therefore, in my opinion, it has no alcoholic note at all. Instead fermented fruit. Orange marmalade with bitter peels. Glazed ginger. Slightly sour oak. Great! The smoke then comes through more strongly on the tongue. Harmonizes brilliantly with the sherry. Sweet sour. Very fruity. The sulfur note remains and makes it really interesting. Salty maritime notes. The oak strikes properly and contributes a tart, spicy note. It becomes slightly peppery. leathery. The tongue becomes slightly numb. The smoke has degraded over the years into wonderfully complex, spicy notes. Simply brilliant in combination with the sherry cask. Light maritime smoke on the finish. A salty note. The fermented fruit remains for a long time. grape must. Cinnamon, slightly over-roasted. And a little chocolate. What an ingenious bottling. The best whisky I've had in my glass so far. Perhaps the name "Port Ellen" also plays a not insignificant role in the assessment. But regardless of the distillery, it would always score well beyond 90p. Simply world class!
https://www.kaypingers-whiskyblog.de/frontend/fullarticle.php?id=443 Colour: Old gold Nose: Sherry, wood and full flavor! Add leather, malt, coarse pepper, lots of salt and dry orange peel. It continues with vanilla, soft herbs, and tough, sticky honey. The wood is present throughout, but well integrated - very beautiful. Taste: Full speed ahead! Salt, pepper, chilli, paprika, citric acid, oranges, sherry and again tons of wood. In addition, heavy notes of leather soles, bitter herbal brew and fresh, sharp parts of wood - great. Finish: Long - spicy, hot and fresh. Getting a bit more rounded, as every part wants to take over the upper hand here. Getting drier and still covered with a lot of leather. The fruit components disappear completely here, but the combination still works. 92 points N: 92P / G: 93P / F: 92P

The aroma of this rich sherry cask initially has notes reminiscent of gunpowder and saltpeter, but these dissipate after about ten minutes of aeration. It then reveals hints of fresh apricots crushed with sea salt, accompanied by mineral-tinged caramelized almonds. A delicate smoky peat accompanies the notes of dust and wax, while juicy apples and pears, sweet vanilla, and a touch of salty cheese complete the mellow ambiance, culminating in a sophisticated and elegant woody base. |

The wine has an exaggeratedly oily body and an extremely strong coating on the tongue. A rich tapestry of sherry flavors unfolds, accompanied by buttery, peaty smoke, sweet apricot juice, and intense woody notes that hit the palate directly. The moment you swallow, a very pronounced and intense burst of passion fruit, guava, and other notes emerges. This is followed by hints of leathery chocolate and the salty seawater crashing against rocks. |

The finish is long and lingering, with a mouthful of apricot juice flavors accompanied by exotic tropical fruits. A sophisticated woody aroma complements the sea salt chocolate, rich and persistent. |
Very beautiful, relatively "noble" nose, complex and with a well-absorbable, but not too intense smoky note, which leaves room for other aromas and complexity. On the palate comes through the Räucherschinkennote enthusiasm. But the alcohol is a bit too aggressive for me.
Colour: Amber Smell: Peat, sea salts, decayed wet sheepskin, a bit of tar. Sherr accents are a bit lacking, maybe smoked apricots somewhere in the background. Taste: Sweet peat. All the EPs I've had so far have it. Sea salt, broken with lightly smoked forest fruits. Finish: Slightly biting, peppery. There are fruit accents and smoked meats. Rating: 7.5
a not quite typical Port Ellen no roller coaster of flavors consistently from nose to finish a nice seductive line the man always wants yes! That's heavenly whisky

A madness swedish! I do not trust my own impressions, after all I have not tasted blind. Can he really be that good? A whisky like Donnerhall: 96 points
Nice whisky for my taste but a bit too alcoholic. Tolerates water

Even the scent is seductive: peat and sweet sherry in mood. Have you ever been to a coal mine? The start is fulfilling: peat and sherry in an optimal combo. The finish is beautifully oily and eternal like a herbal candy.
