[September, 2018] After a short visit at Glenfiddich distillery to check the progress they made with their new still house (that is almost completed) I try one of their latest experiments: an icewine finish named "Winter Storm" (just a sample as I am cautious because of its high price)… ...and that caution was well exercised! This dram offers a fine nose but falls apart in both taste and finish completely. A true disappointment on the palate and way too excessive priced for a "nosing only" whisky. Not recommended unless you do not drink alcohol anyhow...

The nose is a little punchy first but this vanishes quickly. After that it offers a subtle and delicate profile of winey, fruity and honeyed flavours with shy spices. All very balanced and great to sniff, actually I could nose this dram for hours... |

The taste is neither layered nor impressive, I would call this dull and flat with just hints of the wonderful aromas of the nose. This really is disappointing. Water is not needed (how could reduction improve a flat dram?). Maybe this dram fell victim to oxydation in an almost empty bottle (I had this one at a bar) but I can judge it just the way it is, finally... |

The initial mouthfeel is a little warming but not coating at all with no distracting moments either. Actually there is not much of a mouthfeel at all. The finish is very short and adds no new impressions except a minor drying end (papers). This dram is almost non-existent on the palate - how come they named it "Winter Storm" (could be a Monty Python joke)... |
On the nose, sweet fruit, fine spices, some grapes, and exotic fruits. On the palate, grapes still, a vine side, sensation of vat, cinnamon, caramel a little burnt, and dry wood, with dry herbs too, then fruity more green with apple, then vanilla . In the final, simple but tenacious average on the same perfumes! A dram a little oriented with an icy grape, with more depth level mouth and final!

I would say: experiment failed. When many here praise the nose of the bottling, then I ask myself whether everything works for me today. The acidity of a corked Riesling is not my favorite flavor now. Also some sweetness. Oh well... Then drinkable on the palate, but completely irrelevant. Could have been a delicious NAS from the bourbon cask. exit? He has. Very short. At least without misses. Seriously, you can drink it. By the way. But the price is such a cheek that I would like to give it 10 points. Blind I would give 78-82-70. Estimated for 30-40€. But with the price tag of €200, I have to deduct 10 points for the PLV. isso. Ridiculous.

Well, always the same with the different batches .... in the end, the first one is usually the best. so here too. In the Experimental Series so far this is my favorite, but he still sings along, in the choir of the Glenfiddichs, which are way too soft and filled with too little percentage. Incidentally, I also count the Grand Cru in there.

S 7 At 43% and 21yo this is more pungent than I would expect. Nonetheless a good whisky. But it feels it can agenda a bit longer.

I would imagine a Glenfiddich in white port cask could yield similar result. Very estery. White pepper at the back. Sugary barley at the base. |

The estery fruity notes continues. Peppery oak. Good balance at 43% albeit slightly watery. |

So this version is a tough number. I realize that I can't judge how an ice wine whisky should taste. That's where the catch lies. Because actually I should say: This Batch1 was a disappointment. Was that so? I'm not sure because the Batch2 was even more notchy. Think about buying a bottle often. I should give him another chance. The sample was too small. Plan: waiting for bargains!
Imagine drinking freshly squeezed honeydew while eating a overglazed vanilla danish. It’s sweet. Mission accomplished. Oak for balance doesn’t cut it. Lacking depth for 21yrs old.

I was so looking forward to this whisky, but after the great nose he completely disappoints me. Especially the bitterness in the taste and finish is for me a clear false note. Experiment failed.

I have to admit that this bottling disappointed me. Very irrelevant. I could neither understand 21 years of maturation nor the ice wine finish.

Extremely sweet nose, and yes, I love it!...in this case. White grape, huge ice wine influence. A very slight, light cognac note, cereal notes, lots of honey. Toffee, fudge. Warm and thick smell, muggy, juicy fruitiness. Lychee. |

First, to address some confusions circulating on the net, batch 1 is the result of 12 kegs, batch 2 is the result of 65 kegs. From a purely mathematical point of view, it can hardly be the case that 8,000 bottles of each of the two releases are said to have been filled... Unfortunately Glenfiddich has a bit of an image problem, this - and it's actually paradoxical - for the same reason that the malt has become THE or at least one of the best selling malts in the world since the 60s. Some sing praise and praise for the genius stroke of the marketing strategists at Glenfiddich at that time, to which we all owe the abundance of various malts available today, others only call Glenfiddich a "beginner" malt. Far from being an entry-level malt, the Glenfiddich Winter Storm Batch 1 is too unusual and complex for that
