Quite balanced and drinkable, I would guess that the mezcal cask brings in the slightly bitter notes

The Lagavulin 13 Years Ex-Mezcal Casks is brash and bold, and yet surprisingly comforting and balanced as well.
The cask doesn't overpower the Laga, but rather blends very well with the distillate. Very oily in the glass. 86-90 – Wow, really good one, needs a bottle

The Laga is recognizable, maritime, complemented by a few fruity notes. Perhaps orange. Or banana. A sweetness from the barrel. |

Pleasant and delicious, mouthwatering, but also a hint of sour pineapple. Chocolate is added. |
Isn't worth the money. Any 16 year old Lagavulin (Standard) is better!

Peaty and maritim at first nosing. Smooth and well balanced with notes of peat, wood smoke, olives, oak and grilled steak. Decent orange aroma in the background. Clean, fresh and surprisingly light for a Lagavulin. |

Cool whisky! There really is no mezcal here at all! :) More smoothed in terms of phenols than even the same Lagavulin 16, perhaps mezcal was needed here. Strikingly smooth, round and non-alcoholic for 54.8% Something grassy seems to be in the aroma, but no matter how it is a mind game, but in the aftertaste something acid-mescal can already be fantasized. 22 22 22 21

This bottling is a fantastic and very unusual experiment. Those who thought even the Lagavulin Distillers Edition was too extravagant when it was first introduced would turn in their graves. I like it, although I must admit I was very surprised at first. I would have never imagined I'd end up with such a crazy Lagavulin in my glass. The drinking strength is great and no dilution is necessary.

A very surprising and refined Lagavulin nose. Extremely sweet, slightly floral, along with a very delicate maritime smoke. Moist, light-colored Bundt cake with icing, vanilla, floral scent, light smoke with a pinch of sea salt, thyme, rosemary, and flambéed pineapple. Later, the scent of freshly cut branches joins in. |

You can add a few musical metaphors to it and it's certainly a nice experiment. Ultimately, however, it does bring me to belt out exuberant odes to the joy of whisky. ;-) Full review in a session of six Lagavulin: https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2022/05/10/lagavulin-der-moderne/
It has an oily viscosity and its bouquet is relatively intense. I have aromas of campfire smoke, ash, citrus, pears, caramel and honey sweetness. Relatively complex. A good balance between sweetness and dryness in terms of taste. The alcohol is well integrated and it has a heavy body.

A chaotic smell, a high degree of maturity, a little on everything, heavy smoke, a dirty peat wine, full of all kinds of flavor elements that are not welcome by small fresh, the outline of smoke is soot and ashes, The characteristic wormwood and Chinese pharmacy herbal bitterness and a lot of dust, sea salt, seaweed, motor oil, dried fish and dried shrimp, the meat texture is quite strong. Pineapple, lime, caramel, a hint of obscure mezcal mineral and agave juice. 91 |

Oily, peat is very strong, starting with burnt biscuits, sweet citrus syrup, caramel, dry seafood-style fat, bringing out refreshing fruity flavors such as pineapple juice, green apple, light salt, and lavender. During the period, pepper, chili, and peppermint oil are relatively basic, which is the basis for this degree of performance, and it is not offensive. The wine has a high concentration of flavor, strong wine, full fat, balanced flavor, acceptable complexity and high overall maturity. p92b92 |

I came for the gimmick but left utterly surprised and convinced this should be a more regular thing! Mezcal casks and Lagavulin for the win! Full review here: https://maltfascination.com/2023/06/13/lagavulin-13-islay-jazz-festival-2021-ex-mezcal-casks-54-8/
Lagavulin 13yo, 2021 Jazz Festival bottling, finished in mezcal casks, 54.8%. At Melody, Mar 2022. Dark golden orange. Aroma is muted, vaguely lactic, faintly pencil shaving woody. Not great on the nose to be honest. It may be vaguely, subtly 'green' but there’s very little there by way of classic Lagavulin notes or mezcal cask impressions - it's just quite dampened. Taste is very soft at the abv. Softly smouldering. Dry peppery smoke. Some dark chocolate behind that. I’m not getting any mezcal character but I don’t mind so much – I always want a properly emptied cask. The smoke is quite nice. Over time there’s a building green agave note in the middle before the punchy smoky finish. It’s a perfectly good whisky. It delivers the punchy Lagavulin breathy bonfire smoke, subtly infused with a faint greenness that adds a little something different without being crass or cack-handed. It could have been quite a good one but it’s a shame it offers little on the nose. 3.55/85
it's a surprising whisky and the combination between Agave flavour and peat smoke is very successful I like it

To get a better idea of it in direct comparison with the 12-year-old 2021 Special Release. Nose: Significantly less oily-maritime than the 12yo Special Release, no olives, mandemus, algae. Overall also more restrained in terms of aroma intensity. The cask-strong 12-year-old is significantly fatter and more powerful in the glass. The smoke has a certain herbal-floral note. So I imagine smelling smoldering thyme and coriander bushes, with some flowers. Mouth: Cold ash, pumpkin seeds, salmon. In addition, agave syrup, fennel and a bitterness that I can not quite assign. For me, this year's jazz bottling comes up with aromas that don't give a coherent overall picture for my taste. Finish: Medium long, clear herbal aromas and bitter notes that I don't associate with the oak 86/100 Conclusion: I can't deny that this whisky is surprising and has some flavors that I haven't had many times before. Unfortunately, I don't like these, or not in connection with the Lagavulin character. Compared directly with the 2021 12yo CS, the latter is much better, looks rounder and at the same time fatter and full-bodied in intensity.
Successful bottling - great mouthfeel!!

Successful experiment, actually not worlds away from the normal 12 CS releases. The mezcal is palpable and shifts the usual Lagavulin citrus into a greener and more savory vegetal dimension. I must admit it is harmonious and well-done even if the idea read a bit gimmicky on first impression.
A 13 year old Cask Strength Lagavulin finished in mezcal casks! Mezcal is already a smoky drink so this is really exciting!!! Ok on the nose the cask strength doesn't make it self apparent. 54.8%abv but very easy to nose. Classic Lagavulin notes of smoke, soot, sweetness, BBQ meat. Damp oak, cardboard, ash. Now the mezcal is there but interestingly it feels separate. You can nose the Lagavulin and you can nose the Mezcal but they rarely meet. Aha! They come together with some water. Mezcal is so so apparent now, it's almost overpowering Lagavulin! Can you even imagine that :) The palate is where the show is at! The CS makes itself feel on the palate but it's manageable. Very meaty, BBQ, ash, rosemary, bitter and spicy. With some water the sweetness of the mezcal comes out and meets the Lagavulin. There's a sour tinge to it, vegetal and ashy. Beautiful! Wet, charred wood, gorgeous. The finish is super bitter, pepper, smoke, dry and oily at the same time. Sweet, charred and spicy. I would say this is Jalapeno poppers minus the cheese with some honey mustard sauce! Beautiful! This is an awesome whisky. Of course mezcal and peaty whisky go together, of course this had to be a younger Lagavulin to give that peat brashness. This is an incredible, beautiful whisky. Very very well made whisky. I'll give this a 95 and I think anything above 95 is nitpicking for me at my level right now so you can assume it's a 100 :) Cheers!

Smoke, orange, pineapple, passion fruit, lemon, the perfect combination of smoke and sour fruit, it smells so good, Chinese herbal medicine, a hint of bacon and the salty taste brought by the sea breeze. Finally, it's like opening a box of mint lemon candy, and the saliva is secreted unconsciously. |

Bacon, salty caramel, cut tobacco, lime, pepper, a touch of spicy, bring out the flavor of some tropical fruits. The smell is the temporary advantage of fruit flavor, then the taste is the temporary advantage of charcoal smoke. |

After a long time, the slight bitterness left by a trace of Chinese herbal medicine disappears in an instant, and the taste of smoking remains in the mouth. At the same time, it seems to contain a mint lemon candy. |
for the first time tried whisky from mezcal casks... WOW
The aroma of this whisky reveals smoky notes, combined with hints of raisins and licorice. The palate is rich and peaty, with oak notes and complex layers of sherry sweetness. This leads to a long, dry finish that combines peat, oak, and sweetness.
Aroma: sea salt, peat, dark berries, red fruits and a bit of campfire, Taste: smooth and sweet - currants, pears, notes of spices, a bit of pepper and sea breeze, sweetness of agave Finish: smoky, caramel, slightly fruity with a hint of salty caramel and white pepper
It's good, but neither fruity or strong bodied as I expected. Let's wait and try it after couple of months.
Aroma: Immediately envelops you in soft campfire smoke with hints of sea salt, continues with sweet oranges and pineapple, herbs and a subtle note of vanilla cottage cheese casserole, adding a sort of culinary sweetness to the aroma. Next comes wet wood and spices. 23 Taste: delicate and enveloping on the tongue, despite the strength. Green apple, tangerine, pineapple and dried apricots, slightly salty and herbaceous, all wrapped in a delicate smoky coating. 22 Aftertaste: here the salt, herbs and smoke are in the foreground, and the fruit is slightly behind. A warming and seemingly endlessly long-lasting finish. 22 Balance: 23 Total: 90

Had a dram of this as a birthday gift @ the Malt Room in Inverness. As I also love Mezcal, this one got my attention. Certainly was not disappointed as this whisky - mezcal marriage is one to celebrate!
