Quick hit review. A big shout-out to JoshNRW for a very generous sample of this delightful Islay single malt! Old Caol Ila from the 1980s is among my absolute favorites, and the nose of the 'Eye of the Dragon' takes me back to that earthy salt cellar, oysters and hints of chimney soot. Peppermint, lemon zest and a touch of engine oil appear, rounded off by smoked ham, tobacco and distant tropical fruits. Surprisingly juicy and savory, the palate kicks off with ripe oranges, bonfire ashes and oak spices. It has an almost meaty quality that you are tempted to grab knife and fork to dig in. The prolonged and earthy finish lingers with salty licorice, baked apple and a touch of menthol. It is a great composition of flavors, kudos to Pit Krause and the Walhalla of Whisky! RATING: 4.5/5.0 stars ≙ 92 pts → SUPERB

caramel, chocolate, coffee, smoke, iodine, tobacco, red berries, liquorice, spices, great integration between sherry and peat, not bad at all

Medium smoke, sweet and sour plum, not high acidity, but pleasant and refreshing, indeed very obvious sherry peat, western medicine tablets, high complexity.

RWW and their high ratings are quite something. I have a 10cl sample, but after the first dram yesterday, I was rather disappointed. It's better with the second dram today, but I'm still far from a 90 rating. Let's wait a bit before giving it a score. Several weeks have passed, giving my sample time to breathe. The dram is evolving, even after pouring. Initially, there's a hint of curry, then more of spare ribs, campfire, burnt wood, and a touch of caramel. The dram isn't simple, it's not straightforward. But that's precisely what makes it special. It becomes slightly creamy in the mouth over time. May 26 - I opened a bottle, the nose is an absolute dream. 91-100 – Whisky heaven, best stuff

An excellent, deep and compositionally complex whisky, with a wide palette of derivatives, very good work with shades and undertones, it develops significantly, despite the complexity, overall it is quite open and friendly.

A very impressive bottling. It leaves nothing to be desired. The smoke is both strong and elegant, and also very nicely maritime and wonderfully interwoven with the other aromas. It is a bottling that combines the dignity of decades of maturation with the power and effervescence of excellent younger bottlings. You have the best of both worlds in your glass - and this in almost perfect symbiosis. I also love it when a bottling is able to offer an evening-long program through constant change. That is also the case here. When it is cooler, the smoky and spicy notes come out particularly well and when it is lukewarm, the fruity notes explode, even taking a tropical direction. Something like that simply delights the heart! Well done!
JoshNRW 92 22 sep 2024 3:16 am
(Now that the first bottle is almost empty, I'm also certain that the lead malt is a Caol Ila. The bacon aromas in the copita nosing glass are very dominant and almost rule out South Islay.) The 91 points are already given after the third tasting in a week, because this bottling has captivated me so much in such a short time compared to other whiskies - of which I sometimes only had a 2 or 4 cl sample available. Almost every whisky becomes more exciting and enjoyable after a few months in the open bottle, and a little air is also good for all quality drams. Therefore, the requirements here are always a bit difficult to follow. Nevertheless, within a few days, this whisky is - behind the Clash of Clans and also behind the Kilbride Killer - the best whisky with peat smoke, minerality and sherry that I have had in a long time. For 229 euros, I can't really think of anything comparable, and I'm happy that I can share a bit more of it this time and provide my friends with more than just a 2cl sample. Apart from the very successful Bowmore with sherry, I can't think of anything that has captivated me as much in the combination of sherry with smoke and minerality. Nevertheless, the Kilbride Killer was a bit more balanced. Here, the bacon flavor dominates somewhat. Balance, balance, balance. Nothing is over the top, yet everything is intense. I hope simple 40-43% standards from the 70s were poured into the cask here, plus two or three highlight malts. From my own blending experiments, I know that the result is surprisingly good, even though the strong or beautiful parts are underrepresented.
Вкус 91 .5 A little bit drinkable, very harmonious, salty smoke, nutty aromas, sweetness of plums and old rum, salty aromas. The complexity is good. Maybe only 90 to 91 points, but the overall feeling is then a point or two more delicious. I know, "tasty" isn't what matters to us critics, but the combination of the perfect and powerful alcohol percentage, the sipable sherry sweetness and the salty coast, the subtle smoky aromas, is simply truly beautiful and unique on the palate. I closed my eyes every night for three evenings and thoroughly enjoyed it. For the key figures around 91 points in the overall picture.
Финиш 91 .5 The mouthfeel is that salty, dark, light sweetness that I've only had before with Clash of Clan. Mineral and not too heavy on the finish. Salty caramel throughout. Not heavy, but not just smoky or sweet on the finish either. The finish is rather long, not super long, but a little more than medium-long and finer than what I've had in recent years with these key data. I wish I could have a whisky like this in a blind tasting with 6cl. In a blind tasting like that, you might only give a Bowmore Sherry for €600 89 points, and with treasures like this, you wouldn't dare give it much more than 90 points, because you wouldn't expect it. The main argument here was that the first bottle was empty very quickly because I liked switching to this whisky when I wanted an intense flavor aroma.

Нос 91 Nose: Sour, rotten fruit on first impression: cherries, strawberries, sour plums. Interestingly, the Słoń and Bussówka have exactly the same aroma. Very delicate, well-balanced, cured meat with plenty of smoked paprika, bacon, a pleasant, light smoke, slightly rotten, chocolate with hazelnuts, sweet citrus, all beautifully balanced with salt, chocolate with salt. After 45 minutes, salty leather, a humidor aroma, and dried apricots appear in the glass. The alcohol is perfectly balanced. 91.50
Вкус 90 Palate: Very thick, oily, dirty, powdered spices. Sweet and smoked paprika, herbal pepper, lots of ash, wood, and salty leather. A touch of sea and smoke. Dark chocolate, Brazil nuts, much less sweetness than in the aroma. The sour fruit in the aroma is missing. 90.50
Финиш 91 Finish: Long, heavy, perhaps the dirtiest and most intense. Oil, grease, tobacco, iodine, licorice, spices, strongly peated, and lingers. After a while, dark chocolate blends with spices and wet, astringent wood. 91.00

Another bottling by Peter Krause and the Regensburg Club for the Heroes and Founders of their 'Walhalla of Whisky'. Again we have an Islay Single CV - a 'Curriculum Vitae', which means that whiskies from different vintages from the same distillery come together here. If you look at the back label and discover the 'Paps of Jura', everything points to Caol Ila. So no Laphroaig or Bowmore, even if the 'Dragon' in the title has caused some speculation in that direction in the scene. The name simply alludes to 2024 as the year of the dragon in the Chinese calendar. i The current rating on Whiskybase: 91.82 points from 51 reviews. Are they all just fanboys and fangirls? Let's see. Trying helps! EYE/NOSE In the snifter, the Dragon's Eye shines in a deep, dark amber tone. The malt starts impressively on the nose: dense, greasy, almost dirty smoke dominates, interspersed with a salty note that is reminiscent of the last glow of a campfire. The alcohol remains pleasantly low and leaves room for more complex aromas - old wood, the salty freshness of the sea, a hint of port wine and the sweetness of the Oloroso barrels. Little by little, a fruity complexity of ripe berries, vanilla and dark dried fruit unfolds. PALATE It starts off velvety and full-bodied in the mouth. The cold, sweet smoke spreads immediately and brings depth. The alcohol? Perfectly integrated, nothing burns. Here, too, the salty freshness comes to the fore, combined with fruit acid from blackberries and currants and a dark sweetness that is reminiscent of dried fruits such as apricots and figs. There are also hints of leather, cocoa, nutmeg, cardamom and dark grape-nut chocolate. You just don't want to let go of the malt. It tastes brutally like more. FINISH/CONCLUSION The finish is wonderfully long and smoky, with the influences already known from the nose and palate and a warming, sherry-laden intensity that lingers forever. Summa summarum: A great whisky from Regensburg that offers a rare balance of smoke, sweetness, maritime influences and impressive, dry minerality. In direct comparison, the dragon is very similar to the killer. The dragon is a bit sweeter, more palatable and more pleasant. I like him even a bit better than the killer. Very cool stuff. Thanks Pit!!
Tommyknocker 91 24 apr 2026 6:46 pm
You can really taste the blend of older and more recent vintages; it's an old-school sherry dram, complemented by fresh, meaty notes. Neither overpowers the other, though—it's beautifully balanced. Great job again, Pit!
Нос 91 Initially intensely bacon-like, meaty, and sweet, salty, with a sherry-like maritime character and plenty of smoke. Soon, however, the older vintages come to the fore, revealing the full potential of this bottling. Complex sherry notes, cherry, raspberry, raisin, lots of tobacco, and a hint of Maggi seasoning. A good dose of old-school sherry notes, then. A fantastic combination.
Вкус 92 Immediately, intense, meaty, salty, smoky barbecue spices come through, then from the nose the red fruits en masse, salt crescents, leather, chocolate and in waves then tobacco and delicious oak.
Финиш 90 Very, very long, sherry notes on equal footing with the citrusy, maritime Caol Ila character. Fantastic!

Anyway, I've rarely had so much fun pouring and repouring right after opening the bottle. Not a monster of complexity, but so beautifully flawless, so old-school and yet quaffable, it probably gets better through contact with oxygen, as is so often the case. Hopefully a little more complex. But who cares, I don't care, this stuff is (made) for drinking and it works brilliantly for that. Really brilliantly. All these ultra-positive reviews, I can comprehend that as so many indy bottles are rated way too high just because they are special for their sophisticated fanboys. I am a fanboy of Pit Krauses style of the making and the spirit behind this, so this is my nowadays' take on this bottling, which is just as good as it can get for such a price. Love to Pit! EDIT: it is mimimi for me to read complaints about this so unfair secondary market. Become a club member and get your bottle next time

Well, you could probably say it's Caol Ila if you follow the aromas. At the beginning the smoke is clearly dominant, but over time it opens up and becomes more interesting. Water can help with that. But it takes a bit of time. Not so exciting on the palate for me, the smoke is in the foreground again.
Нос 89 Phenolic smoke, iodine, bread, light ash, BBQ, grassy, tobacco, chocolate, red berries, hazelnut,
Вкус 87 Sweet, spices, smoke, pepper, strong alcohol
Финиш 86 Medium-long finish, becoming bitter, pepper, oak, nuts, smoke somewhat muted. Alcohol clearly noticeable.

It has a strong peaty flavor, reminiscent of oyster shell, then candied fruit jam, and orange puree. The sweetness is prominent and intense, finishing with a woody bitterness. (80s) It had a laphroaig feel, but the flavor seemed to be ruined by a modern-style sherry cask.
Dottore 94 17 sep 2024 9:48 pm
I couldn't wait, I just had to open the bottle on day 1 of arrival. Expectations are high as always. The composition is again just to my taste and similar to the last bottlings from Regensburg, well-known, notorious and loved: This time 40% "old" stuff from the 80s and 70s paired with certainly a 20+ year modern portion. The whole thing is sewn together in an old school butt. The back label shows a view of Jura, "unpaid ferrymen productions" can be seen on the label. A distillery near Port Askaig is obvious - without wanting to mention Caol Ila. Powerful dark, ashy smoke on the nose. Old school sherry, plum wine from the Chinese restaurant around the corner. Very maritime, salty. Oysters with a slice of lemon. Fishing boat with a smoking diesel chimney. Pleasant in the mouth, perfect alcohol strength for me, wonderfully integrated alcohol, only aromas are transported and lifted, nothing bites. Quite sweet, old sherry. Ancient balsamic. Sea spray. Oysters. Vanilla wood. Both bourbon and sherry components are recognizable here. Incredibly dense, complex and changeable. The finish doesn't want to end, sweet, maritime, awesome. A dram for poets. I am revelling in memories of Islay, of old bottlings, of bygone whisky times. I am looking forward to the further notes from forum colleagues, the malt simply invites you to dream and write. 94 points without rose-tinted glasses

Didn't expect it to be so smoky at the beginning, but it really packs a punch! Very impetuous at the beginning, this bottling becomes very calm and settled over time and with just a little water. In the second sip, there is hardly any smoke left, but it becomes much fruitier and has more of a barbecue feel. Great bottling, especially the creamy texture and the fine fruitiness that you usually only know from bottlings before the 80s, which comes through in the finish. Compared to a 15 year old oloroso kilchoman from the casado series, which I rated 88p, this one easily takes the throne!

My palate and nostril are both too amateur for this bottling.
Нос 88 Yup, the age is well declared on the first nosing. Mouldy orange, oxidised tropical fruits along with leather, shoe polish and dark honey. These were followed by cigar box, black garlic, while peat remain discreet possibly transcended into herbal ointment and roasted coffee. Aeration brought out juicy and fresh pepino. To be honest it isn’t far from my 1950s bottle of Teacher’s Highland Cream. It’s good, but not transcendental.
Вкус 87 Pretty oily texture with fat. Started with honey, dried dates, coffee. But the body was a bit onto medium (a providence of age, or possibly owing to those 70-proof contents) With great dry-peat developing on the palate. Started a bit shy then unfolds big zesty lemon, dampen bonfire, cold ashes, with loud leather, gear oil, as well as the shoe polish. Later there was almond, remnant ice from an old freezer and ashes.
Финиш 87 Long, robust and rather dry. Medicinal bitterness persisted, with apparent tannin, damp wood, newspaper, dark chocolate, and used leather. Old school dry peat, coal ash and sea spray.

First of all, it should be noted: The whisky has just been bottled. Pouring it into the glass immediately after opening and tasting it straight away does not, as is well known, even come close to the potential that the whisky actually has. Tasted repeatedly within 2 days with the bottle open (allowing it to breathe in the glass for around 2 hours each time). Tasting each time from the lukewarm Spiegelau Snifter. What a performance! Wave after wave of Islay's south coast broadsides are wrapped in the finest silk robes. The sea battle of Trafalgar to the finest harp sounds. Slipknot and Vivaldi at the same time. A whisky of total opposites - and total harmony. Another slow drink milestone of the old, bygone style. You'll be in for a treat when you taste this bottling after a few years in the bottle... Simply brilliant!!!

2B or not to be? That’s one H**l of a pun laden headline. But here we are again with a dram that really reminds me of a smell I kind of love. Burning or burnt pencils. It’s probably a good indication of the kind of childhood I had than anything else. I admit, I’ve burnt my fair share of them, either by being bored enough in those long hot 1970s summers with a magnifying glass (along with numerous ants - forgive me Father, for I have sinned) or with a bic lighter. Either way, the end result was always the same - a charred and burnt smell that takes me back in time like jumping into a Delorean. My bedroom always smelled a bit like a circle of H**l. So, on the nose, burnt and charred wooden pencils, bbq smoke comes in, some of that well mopped bbq meat, a nice sour note wafts about in the background along with a salty friend, some singed shoe leather, burnt coffee beans, burnt marmalade, oooh there really is quite a bit of burnt stuff in this nose. There’s a really good whiff of coastal tar in this thing, think old tar stained ropes on a filthy tug or trawler, a good splash or diesel and some dirty old smoked honey (is that a thing?), cocoa powder and salty sherry. This is a good nose, a great nose, reminiscent of so many things. It’s going to be good, it’s going to be sweet and it’s going to be filthy. I think. Let’s see. In the mouth, oh yes. Burnt pencils, peat smoke, wood ash, dark sherry, nice dark aromatic tobacco, filthy burnt sugars, burnt salted caramel, well toasted brown bread, treacle toffee, smoky black tea with too much sugar, the blackest of fig jams, dirty leather belts and riding harnesses, some stale sweat and a Stilton-like cheesy note. Oak and more of that dark sherry and molasses, chimney soot. This is one you’re either going to love or hate. Me, I love it! What a corker of a mouth. Big and voluminous. Warming and life affirming. Deep and dark and brooding. The flavours are so much darker than how it looks in the glass. This is the thing you want in a hip flask in your pocket at precisely this time of year. It pairs perfectly with the damp, the cold, the darkness. Mulching leaves, wet twigs and damp tweeds. I don’t think it’s from the UK but it sure suits the weather. Any good? Absolutely, just the right amount of punch, poke and muscle and it’s very densely packed with flavours and smells to keep you thoroughly engaged. No need to add water, either. Picking faults, maybe there’s a touch too much drying oak on the palate, it gets a bit astringent. Ever chewed on a burnt pencil? It’s so similar to that experience. What is it? Hmmm. It’s got that Talisker meets Glen Scotia vibe going on with a nice dollop of burning farmyard muck. High 40’s early 50’s abv or maybe this is a really well behaved something in its mid 50s%. Age, hmm, doesn’t feel too young, it reminds me of how the 8 year old Glen Scotia festival malt came across, that hid its youth with some skill. Could this be a 10? I think so. Where’s it from? Scotland? Coastal? Combination of casks? PX is in there surely? Another cracker what ever it is. ———————— Blind revealed - what a whopper. I’d be interested to know what the makeup of the age of the liquid in this NAS single malt is. The young/old vibe really confused me nicely! Price aside, this is a stinker of a dram. Impossible not to love whisky like this. Pencil me in for a few bottles! If I had to guess - Bowmore.

For the first time in a long time, a whisky that is second to none. The finish is amazing, 1000 points. Well done Pit and of course the helper team. The best and tastiest thing I've ever had in a glass from Pit and his series. Thank you for the lovely taste. Tasted last night with and without added water. With about 45% water, the aromas come out even better in the mouth. The aftertaste is minimal. But I couldn't say now whether it's better or worse with or without water. But I can say one thing: finally a whisky that tastes at least as good with water as it does without dilution. I haven't had one like that for a long time. Really great cinema. I've really tried a lot of shit. But for the money, this whisky is unrivaled. I think you would have to spend 3-4 times as much today, if at all, to get this quality. Thanks again Pit for sharing something like this with the whisky world at cost price. I take my hat off to you. Can be applied to both the whisky and Pit!

Нос 91 Smoke and complex spice, with dark fruits and berry jam. Coastal notes, bonfire smoke, and a fresh salty edge.
Вкус 92 Rich and powerful. Smoke, sea breeze, oyster, and mineral notes. Candied fruit and fruity sweetness, with cherry and dark dried fruits, plus ash, spice, leather, and engine oil. Highly complex and seriously impressive.
Финиш 92 Long finish, smoky bacon, ocean, salty caramel, coffee, wood, leather, ash
PM_ROOT 90 17 sep 2025 12:25 am
Нос 89 Smoke and ash from a campfire, heavy and dirty (that workshop grime), sweetness from throat syrups, etc., burnt sulfur, a bit of smoked meat (maybe bacon), leather, a touch of iodine. Alcohol is faintly noticeable. Sweetness pleasantly integrated with the smoke. Notes of honey and sour red fruit and citrus appear in the background.
Вкус 90 There's much more going on here, a greater intensity of aromas, it's oily and delicate, sweet smoke, bonfire ash, leather, sea breeze, minerals, citrus notes, dried fruit, sweetness is always present, but at the end it turns into the spiciness of chili with notes of pepper.
Финиш 90 Slightly spicy, warming, sweet smoke, mineral, sea breeze, iodine, some tannins, long and very intense. The smoke and woody bitterness build. It's quite dry despite the initial sweetness. The finish is smoky with a hint of nuts.

Great whisky for drinking. Nice smoke. I like the combination. But I find the finish too short. What lingers is a bit of smoke and sweetness.

The proportions from the 70s/80s give the whole a finesse that many other bottlings all too often lack.

I have to increase my score to 94. For me, the perfect daily dram and also the whisky for the desert island. Everything I love about this distillery summed up. A poem for the senses. Thank you, Pit.

Eye of the dragon- variable whisky, the beginning has citrus, smoky, then transfer to sherry and spices, smelling like seafoods, next change to woody and bakery. The whole process has peaty and oily

Nose: Stewed pears with honey, mixed between dry and wet seaweed, burnt flaxseeds and yes of course some iodine mixed with Liquorice Mouth: Perfect strength. no water needed Minerally oliveoil, smoked artichokes and light oystersauce and the liquorice shows up again Afterwards; liquorice seems to be a topic and of course, and i never mentioned some wee peat smoke along the way ;-) this is much more easly accessable and ready to drink than previous club bottlings, which need more time in the glass - as a kinda important whisky blogger says from time to time - "dangerously quaffable" I still would give it at least an hour to open up and breath. ---------------------------- and to the people selling a bottle in the marketplace today - i wish you well and may karma have fun with your toe-nails....

Warning: Men, with this material you will grow a third tit and your panties will get wet. It is easy to see which distillery this whisky comes from and if you don't already love this distillery, you will learn to love it through this whisky.

Bacon BBQ Smoker with fine maritime Islay elements, just the right amount of Sherry. Love it, verry quaffable.
