Quick hit review. Some of the independent bottlers offer impressive value bottles, and this Berry Bros. & Rudd is a great example. Nutty sherry notes characterize the nose, emphasizing figs, dates and hints of tobacco. The juicy and spicy arrival is followed by stewed fruits, walnuts and white pepper. Easy drinking, and there is nothing wrong with that. Raisins, nutmeg and a touch of menthol linger in the aftertaste. Decent quality at an affordable price! RATING: 3.4/5.0 stars ≙ 82 pts → ABOVE AVERAGE [-]

Probably not very old, but it's still very lively and refreshing. Being bottled at 44,2% is just about right. Not sure if 46% would have been better, but pretty sure it would have been a dud at 40%. Anyway, I got my bottles at £27 and that is bang for the buck.
Нос 85 Very sweet and fruity. Rich and interesting, but almost completely without wood notes. OK, maybe a tiny hint of dense mahogany. This, and the dark ruby red color make it both look and smell almost like a cherry liquer, which is pleasant enough. From a distance there is what I find to remind me of wild strawberries, and I love those.
Вкус 83 Starts off a bit dry and a bit thin, but it quickly improves. Sweet and fruity. Apart from plums it's kind of hard to separate out. Floral with a growing spice. Far from complex, still very pleasing. Would be a great nip next to a sweet desert.
Финиш 83 Medium lenght. Sweet, with spice staying on into the finish. A little nutty at the very end.

Seems to be mainly young Glenrothes. I also categorise Dalmore and Macallan in this style, but Glenrothes is most likely here. This is a style that generally isn't regarded very highly, so I'm surprised by the high scores for this one. I suppose the scceptable price plays a role there.

BOTTLE #3 [Aug 2019] WB83.69[133] One more bottle then, just to make sure! Much like I had with Lidl’s [25yo & > 34yo] Glenalba’s [WB], this short-lived love affair is certainly over. This third bottle is far too young and spirity. Unlike the first two, this one ended up hanging around on the back shelf for some time. Last month I pulled it out to see whether it had rallied. N: Initially, the engineering behind this one’s creation appears very effective [WN], but closer scrutiny reveals the short cuts. It’s pretty basic and needed months of softening. Thankfully by the bottle’s end the nose became more forgiving. Descriptors: [sherry] syrup, bready, sweet & sour vinegar, honeyed husky crushed nuts, tahini, a touch of white spirt-soaked paint brushes,…. T: Whist the nose may have opened up, the arrival on the palate is generally young and nippy yet proved most agreeable to the uninitiated. Though it demonstrates a bitter-sweet profile fairly well, there is a sense of incompletion, something lacking as if it needs blending. So what did I do? I blended it with an older blend, Ralfy-styley [coming up]. F: The finish is fine if short, murky waxy sweet sour and spirity/grainy becoming more mildly sweet-bitter with nutty caramel/molasses-light. C: A fair sherried blended malt for its price point, just no comparison to the first bottle. Scores 79 points However, pour some of this juice into a hip flask and forget about it for three months and hey presto, we’re significantly closer the calibre of the first bottle again! I guess if the industry hasn’t the discipline to wait any longer for their spirit to age, then we’ll have to – or alternatively – look to older juice on the secondary market: https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2019/09/09/bottle-polishing-sherried-scotch-old-new/

So I can not understand how you can think of it as a PLV banger. In the nose, I have still held back, but in the mouth is already very young and alcoholic. The sherry keg does not heal anymore either.
Нос 79 Clear sherry influence, slightly nutty, chocolate and overripe red fruits, but I can understand the reviews, as there is definitely a metallic note over it, age is not overrated, the more superficial I reinrieche, the less is the false note there, for only 44 , 2% he is quite alcoholic in the nose, including a cereal note, which is of course whining on high Nieveau, for 35 ¬ you get here with neat sherry loaded malt whiskey, which can not be too old, is clear.
Вкус 75 slightly watery mouthfeel, becomes more and more watery, also young and metallic, above that the sherry influence, nuts, chocolate and dark fruits, very inharmonious, I liked the nose even better, alcoholic, very badly integrated
Финиш 77 Heckraus, the sherry is not much left over, cereal, a tick oak, harsh, not very long-lasting
dRambo 78 22 dec 2018 10:53 pm
I would never buy, as long as there are so many delicious alternatives - that was nothing
Нос 75 my first nose is marmalade red fruit but clearly metallic young without alcoholic stinging. The nose gets a bit better with time - but never really tasty. I always have neutral bittering and metal, machine oil and cheap smelly plastic in my nose. In addition a cheap sweet sticky Sherrynase. That can be a Glendronach 12 (until 2015) or a Bunnahabhain 12 much better at the same course
Вкус 80 On the palate it looks thin, then it warms and shows mint at the same time - the alcohol is moderately well integrated for 44% but ok. It is sweet with light nut flavors, there is also a fruity acidity but the sherry fruits are well hidden - a few raisins when chewing and orange - again slightly bitter - drinkable but not tasty
Финиш 80 short, warm, ginger, raisins, hazelnuts, musty, spicy - long pepper and wax
Totoro 83 06 jul 2019 7:27 pm
More refill than first-fill oriented, wich I like just fine. A bit yeasty and young, but more characterful than the "blended malt" category would have you assume. Reminds me of younger sherried Glenrothes and/or Glenfarclas. Some wood can be detected though, along with assorted nuts and a lactic creaminess (yoghurt?) and slightly acidic berry fruits. All in all, not a bad look. Sweet on the palate with oodles of caramel, but also perhaps a bit watery. Uncomplicated, with restrained wood influence and a soft citric zing. Works just fine but nothing stands out. A session dram if I ever had one. Would be more interesting for under 30 Euros; at this price, there are better alternatives.
karloff 43 29 jan 2019 11:28 pm
Looking at the other reviews and rates I am very much the minority. But all I can do is say how I find it. This was a sample courtesy of Peatbogger.
Нос 42 Struggling with this nose to find anything. It just smells a bit stale, or more like stale mate. What I do get is wet clothes drying on a radiator. Can't take this any further unfortunately.
Вкус 45 The taste isn't much better, it's lacking not just something but a lot. Taste and texture are way off the mark. It has a punch but doesn't follow up with anything special. There are fruit notes but it tastes very artificial. Like those fruit sherbets you got as a kid and you added water to make a fizzy drink. What fruit flavour was it? God knows.
Финиш 41 The finish is poor as well. It just falls flat straight away.

Blind tasting: Beautiful color, chestnut, inviting Nose: takes some time, caramel, dried fruit, dates, nuts, chocolate, ethereal note, nice sherry nose Taste: sweet on the tongue, immediately nut, pepper, then the spice of European oak, young but not too young Finish: strong contrast, becoming bitter on first tongue contact, intense nut with chilli, only a little fruity and only very short to medium in length I would have guessed a young Edradour or Dalmore, possibly also Glenrothes Conclusion: great sherry profile, alcohol could be better integrated, probably due to the youth After revealing the secret of the bottling, I notice a very good PLV, even if the Cadenhead 12yo batches are slightly ahead of me, especially due to the 83/100 finish
JoshNRW 82 04 feb 2021 10:08 am
Blender glass Very simple story, but drinkable.
Нос 83 Phew, the blender glass is perhaps a little too demanding for him. Very biting at the beginning. Somewhat evaporates after 15 minutes, but this strong vinegar note remains. There is also a hint of delicious, fine, thin sherry with leather, but everything is a bit thin and pointed. Still a fine and simple blend. Pouring it into the Glencairn helps a little against the sting, but the profile remains fruity and metallic.
Вкус 83 83.5 Less spicy than the nose and even a bit tasty, but very simple. Again fruity sherry and again a bit metallic.
Финиш 81 Bitter and slightly alcoholic finish, but longer than expected.

Still a bit immature and metallic. Above all, I miss fruit notes.
Нос 79 Smells somehow "bitter" with a slightly pungent alcohol note. Sherry is recognizable, but hardly any fruit. Most likely still cherry and intense spices (carnation).
Вкус 81 Again alcohol, some nutty Sherry notes, orange peel and clove.

Lots of sherry on the nose but what stands out most to me is the dark chocolate on the palate. Really lovely, especially for less than 35 euros a bottle.

Berry Bros. & Rudd Classic Sherry Cask, BMSW (44.2%) 30ml sample at home Dec 2022. Extremely dark orange. I can’t say for a second I believe it to be natural. There’s caramel colouring and then there’s this – it looks like a 30 year old Armagnac. Aroma is refill cask woodiness, lightly peachy, some fruit pastilles, faintest faintest struck match, dark wood and cocoa. Body is watery or thinner. Taste is again quite woody, refill bitter wood. Simple woody flavour. Tastes quite cheap, but I actually quite like the vibe given by those old-seeming refill casks – that bitter woodiness. It does remind me of stuff you pick up for £12 a bottle in Lidl though. Not terrible but it’s just a bitter cheap refill NAS blend that’s been tangoed to the max. I’ve had way better blends at half the price, I’m afraid. 2.95/71

I was really looking forward to it because of the descriptions so far, but I'm not entirely convinced: yes, a good blend and clearly Sherry Cask but the Cadenhead 12y # 8 and # 9 coming out of the same league are much better

Interesting mixture of properties of young and old malts. I really like the old cask note as it balances and outweighs the young brandy flair. Without this grade, I would have only given 70 points.

Smell: strong sherry nose, red cooked fruit, a little chocolate, orange, vanilla, plum jam Taste: red berries, distinct oranges and orange peel (possibly also orange marmalade), quite sweet, a little young as the alcohol is noticeable despite the 44.2%, but not unpleasant Finish: slightly astringent and a really slight bitterness (which I can not classify) I bought the bottle because the frame data for the price seemed pretty neat. If you are looking for a sherry bomb for everyday enjoyment then here are the 34 mice are well laid out. A few percent and an age (or a little more age) would have been nice. There may be more NAS whiskeys like this one here.
67conrad67 83 23 dec 2021 4:59 pm
Odor: average Bouquet, rather slim on the nose, fine sweetness, overall slightly defensive, according to an astringent note, alcohol quite present, grainy / malty Taste: fine sherry note, alcohol present, again rather lean, decent. Melting, very decent. Vanilla, medium reverberation Color: copper gold, clear, medium. WR Conclusion: good to drink, rather on the slim side with a likely high proportion of refill kegs, which is why the alcohol sometimes comes across a bit too present - but a real snapper for the price!
Crovies 87 18 may 2023 4:04 pm
I still feel that the third batch is better, except that the third batch will have a heavier barrel flavor just after opening the bottle.
Нос 88 The aroma is rich and full, without obvious stimulation by alcohol vapor; At the first smell, very full and rich medium-heavy sherry, the whole vanilla honey caramel cream berry cake is visually appealing; Smell, more clear and deep cherry gooseberry, candied red dates, preserved ebony fruit, and a little old-fashioned sour plum soup.
Вкус 87 The wine is light in body, soft and smooth, with medium oiliness and weak stimulation; Top note, exploding various berries mainly including cherry gooseberry, and candied fruit mainly including dried ebony dates; Middle notes, the sense of Christmas, cinnamon gingerbread caramel apple pie, with a hint of woody tannins from sherry barrels; After the tone, hot mocha, hot cocoa, caramel latte in winter, and a little herbal herbs, licorice leather.
Финиш 86 Warm and pleasant, long aftertaste, balanced flavor, weak sense of oil; Typical flavor of sherry whiskey, but more prominent some herbal herbs, dark chocolate, slightly bitter bottom.
