В аромате — торфяной дым (мягкий, тёплый, местами «сальный»), к которому добавляются пряности (орегано, тимьян, тархун, звёздчатый анис), тёмные фрукты и ягоды (вишня, спелый виноград, изюм, ежевика, чёрная смородина), а также солёное морское дыхание и нотки затхлой бочки. Во вкусе дым становится заметно интенсивнее, сухим и холодным: копчёная рыба, водоросли, машинное масло, можжевельник, сухой дуб, чёрный перец, уравновешенные ячменным сахаром и тягучей сладостью ирисок. Послевкусие среднее-долгое и сухое, с холодным кострищем на атлантическом берегу, нугой, кофе с молоком, лакрицей, солью и йодом. Хвалят опасную питкость, полнотелость, качественную текстуру и удачное сочетание сладости с горечью дыма; главное расхождение — роль хересной отделки: почти все опытные сходятся, что Пало Кортадо подавлен торфом и вслепую неузнаваем, тогда как отдельные менее опытные авторы, наоборот, находят влияние хереса выраженным, как у первого залива. Критика касается лёгкой одномерности из-за постоянного доминирования торфа, шероховатой текстуры от дубильных танинов и имбирной пряности; один резко выпадающий отзыв (65) винит дисбаланс между зерновой и пряной сторонами. В остальном оценки плотно сгруппированы в диапазоне 84–88, и опытные, и рядовые ревьюеры сходятся на «отлично пьётся для любителей крепкого торфа».

Caol Ila and Palo Cortado, an extremely tasty combination here. This is one of those Heinzelmännchen whiskys: the fill level in the bottle drops faster than it should based on your self-assessment of your own drinking behavior, so it can't be other than that at night, when everyone is asleep, someone (presumably) uses their wee dram for services rendered and poured behind the small bandage.

Нос	88	Starts with a very successful and inviting combination of smoke, spices and fruit. The peat smoke is mild, seems warm and a little greasy, spices appear: oregano, thyme and tarragon, fruit aromas appear in the form of cherries, ripe grapes, raisins, blackberries. No aroma leads, all three departments are placed next to each other on an equal footing. After a while a note of musty barrel and a salty breeze from the sea emerge.
Вкус	87	On the nose I wouldn't have guessed it was a Caol Ila, but on the tongue it clearly appears to be one. Now much more intense peat smoke than in the nose, cool and dry. Smoked fish, seaweed, machine oil - it really hits the spot on the tongue. Juniper, dry oak, raisin bread, plums, blackberries. The ever-increasing drought is astonishing. Black pepper, thyme.
Финиш	87	Medium-long and dry (not surprising if this were different after its appearance on the tongue) finish, cold smoke that tries to push into every corner of the mouth. Nougat, café au lait, black pepper, seaweed, a freshly paved road.

[July 2023] I adore Palo Cortado sherry as a wine, but it is not given that such a finish works well with every malt... ...and it does not work with this Caol Ila, actually. The usually fine Palo Cortado is completely overpowered by the peat and even the malt flavours, hence it does not really add anything significant to the profile. But I do not miss the wine, and in a blind setting I would not recognise a sherry finish at all. This is a heavily peated Islay dram, and as such very quaffable.

Нос	86	The colour is deep copper, and the nose offers a completely peat-driven profile at the first sniff. After some breathing both the malt and the sherry dare to come out of the dark, but the peat clearly stays the ruler of the nose. Nothing wrong with that - this Caol Ila is much heavier peated than usual. It takes more than twenty minutes until the other aromas are clearly recognisable, and still I do not find most aromas of the official tasting notes, like so often with Cadenhead's (obviously, their master taster owns a completely different set of tasting genes to me ;-))
Вкус	87	The taste is peat-dominated too, but the malt adds powerful barley sugars to balance the bitter peaty flavours. This is the winning Caol Ila formula, while the Palo Cortado still hides cowardly in the background. Even some chewing does not convince the wine to show up in the spotlight, in this setting it plays a walk-on role only. But I do not miss the sherry, actually. No flaws that I can find, except that the peat stays at the helmet all the time which turns this dram a little one-dimensional. Nonetheless, this is easy-drinking stuff for heavy peat lovers.
Финиш	87	The dram arrives warming and coating on my palate without distracting moments, the texture of this Caol Ila is pretty good. The finish is long, and adds more impressions of a cold bonfire on an Atlantic beach hence it turns more to the bitter side of the peat. Some water smooths both nose and taste, but this rips off the most of the fun too. I prefer the neat dram. I did not find the toasted marshmallows or the dates, apricots, pecans or strawberries (of the official tasting note) neither in the taste nor during the finish. Anyway - such tasting notes are written from a marketing perspective, usually.

Deep soot, smoked ham, barbecue grease, thick plumes of carbon dioxide smoke. Behind, a drizzle of vanilla and pineapple pulp. Surprising assembly, but it's very pleasant and full-bodied. In the mouth, you have the impression of chewing ashes, apricots, dates, apples, perhaps some cereals and nuts, various spices but not too strong, paprika, cinnamon, nutmeg. Very pleasant finish, long but not explosive, we find the tide and some shells, a touch of salt and iodine. It was only after the tasting that I learned they were Palo Cortado barrels. The notes, heavily marked by grains (spelt, barley, etc.) and the sherry influence, give it a very intense finish of yeast extract, licorice, and black pepper. The peat is moderately intense. An average whisky, too unbalanced between the grain and the spicy side.

The Caol Ila that I have had in my glass so far were very floral. This Caol Ila is not floral at all, rather hearty and strong in the smoke. I like it a lot, if you're in the mood for a good smoke, you're well served here. The sweetness takes away the severity of the smoke and rounds off the taste nicely.

Amazing Caol Ila character, except that I personally hardly feel the Palo Cortado at that time. But a pretty intense lemon-spicy smoky aroma, with a pinch of pineapple pulp, yes. The taste is herbal, peaty, maybe boiled corn. Great whisky!

This is a decent, well-crafted sherried Caol Ila that checks all the right boxes for a peated sherry expression. The Palo Cortado influence is quite pronounced, delivering a rich profile akin to a first-fill sherry cask maturation. While it is not particularly memorable and suffers from a slightly rough texture due to prickly oak tannins and ginger spice, the interplay between the heavy toffee sweetness and the layered bitterness keeps the dram balanced. It remains an enjoyable pour that offers a satisfying, straightforward configuration for fans of the style.

Today two CIs in a direct comparison. Once 46% small batch vs. CS single cask. Both from Cadenheads 2023 with about 1 year of Palo Cortado finish 46% Nose: For a Caol Ila, unusually "smelly" smoke with a herbal touch. Some dark fruit and berries. Cherry compote and blackberry. Some star anise. Smoked bacon. Mouth: Soft start, medium mouthfeel. Plum jam and cherry compote. Strong peat smoke. Grilled fish, some rosemary and oak spices. Slightly salty notes in the fruit sweetness. Finish: Medium length, coffee and dark chocolate. Light ash notes. 87/100 Conclusion: Dangerously drinkable, the sherry is nicely integrated and not dominant.

Once upon a time there was a trip to the Tensu Spirits Boutique in Belgium. Searched and found them. And this Caol Ila from Cadenhead. For me one of the best peat noses I've had so far.

Нос	90	A grill nose to dream about. Sweet, really smoky and complex for 11 years. Orange, lemon and smoked pineapple. Bacon. Absolutely BBQ in waiting position. It was really fun to sniff it. Peanuts are coming.
Вкус	88	Soft with the 46 percent. Bam! I think they say hickory smoke or something like that. Fantastic. Then the sweetness again and then slight bitterness from the wood. Oak sweetened. Is that possible ? On the second sip it becomes fruitier (orange, grape) and nuttier. Simply delicious.
Финиш	86	Definitely of the longer variety. Traces of licorice and salmiac present. Smoke remains present. Sweetness becomes less. BBQ and grain stop by for a moment. Peanuts too. Sweet!
