Tasted again from another sample a few years later - still as good as before - I would probably add vanilla to the nose

Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, sweet spices, tobacco, orange, red fruits, raisins, oak, herbs, marzipan, vanilla, cereals, not the fruitiness exuberance of the 76s but still a nicely matured old style Tomatin
[August, 2021] During the first decade of this century a lot of very old Tomatin were released, simply because Tomatin always was favoured by the blenders (a common saying was "If you miss something in your blend simply add a cask of Tomatin!") so many independent bottlers owned huge stocks of Tomatin casks to create old blends. This is a good example for such an old beauty... ...and it is excellent, like almost all of its peers. The wood dominance is a borderline case in terms of the old whisky styles, but it is absolutely okay given the modern whisky "zeitgeist" of rather aggressive casks. Nice stuff to quaff, if you do not have to bother about actual price points.

The colour is tawny and the nose offers a flawless old-style sherry profile with strong but not overpowering wooden impressions. The malt takes its time until it shows up but it does, finally. The sherry is more of the herbal-spicy kind so obviously the cask was made of European oak. There are leathery notes too, and after some breathing shy fruits dare to enter the profile. |

The taste is almost like a liqueur with herbal-spicy impressions beside an enormous thick sweetness. Then the tannins of the wood kick in and turn this taste into a borderline case but modern drinkers with a sweet spot for heavy wooden notes will adore this, for sure. The fruits are more present than with the nose and they are rather exotic (figs, dates). Actually, this is quite delicious and the strong wooden notes are not that bad once my taste buds adapted to it. The sherry and malt are flawless. |

The dram arrives powerful on the palate with a creamy texture and some bitter-astringent moments from the tannins of the wood. The finish is long and turns more bitter-drying towards the end (yes, the tannins strike back) without getting unpleasant at all. Water is not needed but does no harm either. |

Sherry and oak are not exaggerated, but Tomatin notes neither...

Tomatin 45 yo 1966/2011 (46.1%, The Whisky Agency and The Nectar, sherry butt, 391 bottles) Colour: deep gold. Nose: nope, there’s no extravagant fruitiness at first sniffs, maybe because of the sherry, or maybe because it’s very old Tomatin. But don’t get me wrong, it’s still a complex whisky, it’s simply more on leather and tobacco at first nosing, then on old herbs liqueurs (yes, yellow Chartreuse), putty, thuja wood, cigar box and a little beef (dried). Keywords ‘polished wood’. Mouth: more fruits and a straighter oakiness as well, a tad biting and bitter. More herbal liqueur (Jägermeister – I know, no brand names!) white pepper and cinnamon, then more fruits indeed, such as kumquats and figs, as well as a little mint. Finish: long, more oaky and bitter. Comments: we’re close to the limits as far as oakiness is concerned but it’s still very drinkable, provided you’re not against herbal liqueurs. Excellent anyway but what’s sure is that it’s not the expected fruit bomb. SGP:471 – 87 Points.

It lacks a bit of punch in attack and complexity in the mouth, it would have had to bottle a few years ago already. But it remains of an excellent level, especially the nose, magic! Drink with disconcerting ease.
Very nice old whisky (45 years old) after sherry. The smell, taste and finish is very similar, full of sherry, oak (she spent 45 years in a barrel after all), delicious spices and dried fruit. Plus leather and tobacco. Some people point out the oak, but I don't mind. Solid 8/10 (95/100).
