You really don't feel the 51.3% abv - so fruity and smooth, very good!
1973-1975, 41-44 years old undisclosed Speyside single malts x 10 I had very high expectations for this tasting and that was hardly surprising as the average scores were between 91-93 points. Most people think they are all Glenfarclas and they must be at least 3rd fill possibly 4th fill judging by the quality on show here. Alas I was disappointed and the high scores on these malts were not justified, some people score them 97/98 points or even higher? I only scored 3 over 90 points and if i was honest with myself the rest could easily have been a few points lower than the average scores i gave them. The Maltbarn was the best, the Daily Dram and the Whisky Fassle gave a good account of themselves and the TWA whisky exchange gets a mention but it was hardly exciting. The other 6 were disappointing with weakish noses and a palate that was the wrong side of woody which at times the wood stopped the fruit in its tracks which was a shame. They were also a bit thin and in final summary insipid, uninteresting and boring to me. The top 3 i would not pay more than £200 for, the rest I would not buy, the prices people want for these is stupid, just becuse something is old they are not better and if they are indeed Glenfarclas then in most cases they were not up to the quality that the distillery needed to keep them as an official bottling, the Maltbarn and Daily Dram were good enough, so a shout out to those two IB bottlers. My comments will be disagreed with I am sure but this is where H2H tastings come into their own, and let you score accordingly matched to quality, you always have a reference point to place your scores around. In isolation i can sort of understand some of the high scores and my sensitivity to bitterness will always be a factor but apart from the top 3 there was nothing to get excited about here, that said the scores are respectable so decent aged single malts without in most cases approaching real quality. 1-Speyside 43 year 1973 47.7% sherry cask 149 bottles Maltbarn wb id 95118 92/92/93 2-Speyside Region 1973 43 year 49.7% celebrating 10th anniversary of Daily Dram wb id 86910 87/91/91 3-Speyside Region 41 year fino sherry 1975 47.4% Whisky Fassle wb id 80035 91/90/91 4-Speyside Region The Whisky Agency 1973 43 year 47.4% TWE Exclusive wb id 118346 87/90/90 5-A Speyside distillery Cask 12 43 year 1973 52.2% 221 bottles Whisky Doris- wb id 117953 88/88/89 6-Speyside Region 44 year sherry cask 1973 51.6% sherry cask 372 bottles Antique Lions wb id 99244 87/86/88 7-A Speyside Distillery 41 year fino sherry 1975 46.9% 220 bottles Whisky Doris wb id 95372 - 88/87/86 8-Speyside Region, The Whisky Agency 1973 44 year 48.6% 10 years of TWA wb id 110350 86/86/87 9-Speyside Region The Whisky Agency 1973 43 year 52.4% Art Nouveau Ladies sherry wood wb id 98877 88/84/85 10-Speyside Region The Whisky Agency 1973 43 year 46.9% Art Nouveau Ladies sherry butt wb id 94857 89/82/85
Great complexity, tropical fruit compote, another great 73 speysider
[August, 2018] I just had an excellent undisclosed Speyside region malt from a different german bottler (WB 84938) so I am curious if this one is even better (as the average rating score suggests). This is a fine dram but it stayed some years too long in the cask so the wood is dominant and turns the whisky a little bitter and astringent. But nevertheless an excellent dram...

The colour is old gold and the nose offers a fine fruity-honey profile that is very sweet - but to be honest, I liked the Sansibar better. The wooden notes grow stronger the longer this dram breathes what is not bad but they simply dominate the other fine aromas and turn the nose unbalanced. Nevertheless, this is criticism on a very high level of quality - sorry for that... |

The taste is nicely layered on all kinds of sweet aromas (barley sugars, honeys, fruits) with delicate spices (ginger, nutmeg and the like) and firm wooden notes that are a little too strong for my taste buds, again. It is delicate and very interesting to explore but due to the heavier tannins I would not drink more than one dram in a row. Water turns the dram even sweeter and takes out some of the wooden notes - I like it best when reduced to about 43% abv. |

The dram arrives warming and coating in the mouth with a significant bitter-astringent feeling from the tannins. Not really unpleasant but too much to be enjoyable. The finish is long and now the wood has the say, unfortunately (I am not a wood-head anyhow)... |
Very sophisticated, wonderfully fruity malt with powerful flavors. The matured oak and the spiciness are entered nicely. Compared to the Speyside Malt 1975 Sb, which I also brought to 92 points, this is a less fruity and sherried edition where more oak and spice is gained. Adding the flavor profile and the price I guess Tomintoul.

Highly refined and elegant. Slight sherry, probably fino. Wonderful fruitiness: apple, pineapple, peach, pear and mango. Touch of citruses. Raisin. Honey, vanilla and chocolate. Slightly matured, spicy oak breeze. Coconut and jasmine green tea. |

It's surprisingly powerful, creamy and sophisticated. Really doesn't feel the alcohol, wow! Fruits on the nose are nicely complemented with banana and tangerine. Vibrant acids. The matured, slightly tannic oak and the spiciness, especially white pepper gets more space. Green teas, vanilla. It's still surrounded by a light fresh mint cloud. |

Highly enjoyable, fruity, complex whisky.
A very closed-off aroma, you wait and wait for it to shed its armor and reveal a bit of its profile. Candied berries predominate, like cranberries in powdered sugar, like Kolomenskaya pastila. Dust from tree bark, dry notes of foliage, and a cellar with stored fruit. The taste is more aggressive, but retains its profile and a hint of acetone. The finish is bittersweet.

Another excellent 1973. This one is perhaps more on the robust side, but still great.

Reminds me of an old Glenglassaugh. Very interesting, but not quite to my taste. 86-90 – Wow, really good one, needs a bottle

fuck rottendon you nailed it! ;-) These Speysides are soooo great... Not much else to say :-)
Very complex and rich in derivative whiskys, very complex, the barrels were mixed together, the base was no longer able to make out what came from, the aroma was fabulously good, the taste / finish was a little easier, it became tougher and sharper in development, which slightly disappointed me after a sweet and soft aroma , such a peculiar negative wow effect; however, over time, the sharpness disappears, leaving an invigorating and fresh feeling, no - it’s still a major league, and what kind of development is like “War and Peace” among single-malt ones.

Have it against https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/95372/a-speyside-distillery-1975-wd and https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/98907/speyside-region-1973 -ma keyed. Unfortunately for me the "tail light" of this 3er flight, albeit on a very high level.
What an intense and multi-layered fruit bomb, I'm thrilled! This complex malt releases the most different flavors and these harmonize perfectly with each other. Fruits, herbs, leather, tobacco, spicy wood elements, chocolate and many other tasty flavors make this old Speysider a taste experience. The high alcohol content is perfectly and harmoniously integrated, here and there the high age can be guessed. A great and very interesting Malt, I like it very much!

Great malt, wonderful fruit cocktail, whose old age is clearly visible, without the long Fassreifung would kill the malt. Since the filling time was chosen pretty perfect, I would say!

Conclusion: 92/100 points - "amazing fruity whisky". This great undisclosed Speysider (you often go directly from a Glenfarclas, but the fruitiness reminds me more of Allt-a-Bhainne of the 90s and Tomintoul of the 70s) from the Fino-Sherry keg (which I assume) is a fruit bomb in front of the Lord. At first fruity and stunning, with more time, however, even rounder and sweeter. The slight alcoholic touch disappears quickly and makes room for fruity sweet flavors, later even peach and mango. Please give the whisky time to breathe! Since I feel the issue price of 385 € as quite high, is in my view at 92 points "end". If he were around 250-300 € I would have probably awarded 94 points ... Smell with the best I had in the nose! MEGA !!!! Unfortunately, the taste is too one-sided and not complex. The fruit and the sweetness have completely lacked in taste.
What else is there to say big? A maturation near perfection. 95 points, one big bottle destroys the exorbitant price.
Won today or yesterday evening in direct comparison to the Acla44! More intense on the nose, probably due to the higher alcohol content, sweeter on the palate, but a good bit more 'spicy' in the finish.

The scent leaves nothing to be desired: a multitude of aromas, intricately interwoven, each breath different and exciting, intense and rich. One couldn't ask for more. In the mouth, the whisky is more bitter than one would expect from the nose, but that's no wonder after 43 years in the cask; the wood flexes its muscles. The long finish combines aroma and taste, rounding off the enjoyment beautifully. A great whisky! After 43 years, you can't expect a sweet milk chocolate praline, and you won't get one. I would never have guessed this was a sherry cask if I were blindfolded.
Very nice on tropic fruits (litschies anyone?) and White pepper with a Long and satisfying aftertaste. Remonds me of some very good bishmills.
Very good if a little below its siblings for my taste, but still drinks dangerously easily.

Nose: Already pouring is a real pleasure. A torrent of scary sweet exotic fruits paired with fine vanilla and jasmine tea aromas flows to meet one. I can not identify really bitter oak flavors that might betray the proud age. It's just this creamy vanilla-floral fragrance mix that suggests an approach of age or oak flavors. After a while in the glass I associate something like sweet cherries with milk chocolate, apples, cinnamon, caramel and honey. This aroma is something special. So fruity and yet so complex with perfectly integrated alcohol. Taste: Sweet and spicy with a very pleasant but intense tingle. This intense nose nose repeats and literally explodes throughout the mouth. The vanilla is also present. Furthermore, cinnamon, light pepper, caramel and something like orange blossom / jasmine bleeding can be found. However, there are also subtle aromas of a rather old barrel: masses of spicy roasted aromas, associations with leather couch, tobacco, chocolate and nutmeg are also not enough. The intensity of the aromas is outstanding and does not stop me grinning. The finish is chilling with mint and still surprisingly sweet. The oak is delicate and tart and tends to go in the jasmine tea direction with dark chocolate. This very slightly tart aroma with roasted aromas lingers on the tongue for a long time. Conclusion: a wonderful experience. A malt delivers and is completely different than what I have given previous old whisky bottlings. This intense aroma of exotic fruits in old age is unparalleled.
