Light sherry, hints of citrus fruits, good sweetness but not sticky, no sulphur and no leather - just young and easy drinkable. OK, the price should be lower but why not?

In no way a great whisky. Over exposed and extreme.... I like extreme, so a few points scored. The rest is for ompf and spice attack.

A grandiose dram, a lot of wood, dry sherry, somehow also clear, filigree and deep. Class. In comparison to the good Batch 39, one has to say that this one is a bit more canny, but also clearer and more direct and aromatically deeper. Just a little better
dramspotter 87 18 mar 2019 7:17 pm
Wonderfully strong sherry with an orangey/Cointreau tang in the mouth. For something only in a sherry cask for a period between other woods it has oodles of taste. Very strong sulphur note makes it quite a standout. The thing that is wrong is the name: I know the sherry is intermediate to the other maturations but it does not exactly scream at you from the shelves with a name like that.

Serge says: Amrut 'Intermediate Sherry Matured' (57.1%, OB, 2010) This one was first matured in bourbon and new oak, then in sherry, then in bourbon again. Interesting, especially the way the distillery ‘treated’ the sherry casks. They ordered casks from Spain but instead of letting the suppliers burn sulphur into them – which I believe is the normal procedure – they shipped cases of Amrut CS to Spain and asked the Spaniards to fill each butt with some whisky and then roll them, so that the distillate would protect the wood from bacteria and mould during transportation from Jerez to Madras and then Bangalore. What’s funny is that with my friend and winemaker Olivier, who does it with some of his own wine casks, we had already told several Scots that they should do that with their own spirits, so that they could avoid the dreadful sulphury notes. Not sure they ever followed our advices, as it’s a very expensive method! But let’s try the result now… Colour: deep gold. Nose: it’s sherried but not that much. Notes of cherries, raspberry, kirsch, a little orange liqueur, rosehip tea... Maybe old roses as well. All that is very clean, fragrant... Notes of raspberry ganache. With water: more spices from the wood, ginger and lemon balm. The oak was quite active here. Mouth (neat): rich and creamy, very appealing, sweet, more aromatic than the “average” sherried malt. Notes of Turkish delights, rose water, orange marmalade... Very pleasant spiciness (star anise, cinnamon). Again, it's very clean, almost a little zesty. With water: very nice citrusy notes and many spices. Most unusual but perfect. Liquorice, pepper, ginger and marmalade. Finish: long, on the same notes, with a faint saltiness and maybe a little peat. Comments: this new style is impressively to my liking. Perfect first fill sherry without any cloying elements, and no single traces of burnt matches/rubber whatsoever. SGP:553 - 91 points.

an incomparably beautiful spicy drink despite the heavy presence of Sherry is not overwhelming. a very good balance and a nice drink. Although it is to watch out when drinking, because the high alcohol percentage you can not really taste it.

Sample All the rage for a while back in the day. I think I had a later batch before and had luke warm enthusiasm. Let’s check the OG
Нос 76 Spicy wood. Cedar, and I swear there are some Indian spices in there. It’s... different. Coriander? Chalky candy. Artificial.
Вкус 76 It tastes like fun dip. Apologies if you don’t know what that is; it’s cheap powdered artificial candy. Artificial cherry, fresh wood, sweet.
Финиш 75 Sweet, artificial powdered candy. Good memories, but sometimes things are better as a memory... spicy oak, forced. Big in your face flavours, but lacks elegance. Very modern.

Amrut Intermediate sherry 50% is bottled at cask strength (british standard 100 Proof) and got its name because after initial maturation in ex-bourbon barrels it is "temporarily" moved to maturation in ex-sherry barrels and then moved again for finishing (?) in ex-bourbon barrels. This innovative method brings a pleasant fruity aroma, a perfectly integrated taste of overripe red fruit (almost candied), fruit marmalade, oranges or other sweet fruit coated with a slightly tannic (wine) skin. In the end it dries for a long time with an aniseed accent.

Definitely a great dram and worth trying, if you can get it outside of Ontario, CA.
FritzeKrautman 86 02 aug 2021 8:43 pm
Very sherry-dominated nose, practically indistinguishable from a Scot. Quite alcoholic without water. Not a bad, but very barrel-heavy and therefore exchangeable whisky
Нос 87 Sherry, ripe plums, pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, dust, vanilla, later coconut
Вкус 86 Sweet, dark and exotic fruits, undiluted alcohol quite dominant,
Финиш 86 Almost medium-long finish, spices, burning alcohol, oak,

Rich sherry, citrus, wet wood, sweet and inviting, vanilla and spices join the palate, the oak here has a nice bite. Amrut signature malt comes through strong in the finish. Great value here.

Quite a deterrent without water. With patience and water, he shows idiosyncratic corners and edges. Interesting, but somehow confused.
Нос 85 Undiluted, I first find an irritating mineral note, paint and a lot of sulfur. Much more pleasant with water. Orange and clear sherry.
Вкус 79 Another charge of sulfur. The funny mineral note from the aroma on the palate, even with water is not pleasant. Is this part of the character of the distiller? The alcohol is very present. In addition, some sharpness, reminiscent of pepper, and bitter oak. A little vanilla.
Финиш 81 Pretty dry sherry notes. Black pepper. Bitter oak stays on the palate for a long time.

If you give it time, you will be surprised with a great, fruity nose. Delicious! The taste is significantly spicier. The associations with curry are interesting - is my brain playing tricks on me? Diluting with water doesn't really bring about any improvement, especially in the mouth. Due to the unfulfilled high expectations that this fruity nose triggers, the taste slips a bit for me. It lacks the honey sweetness and fruit. Although I like the fine, bitter spice aromas, they make it quite drinkable. However, for me it is in no way worth the currently advertised price range of €115 to €130.
Нос 88 Whether it's the alcohol content or something else, the nose is rather subdued at first impression. But what immediately stands out is a very intense honey note with roasted peanuts. After standing for a good twenty minutes, the Indian whisky opens up noticeably. So now, alongside honey, there is a veritable potpourri of different fruits whose smells mix with each other. You can smell honeydew melon, apricots and peaches. Ripe bananas and plum jam provide the creamy basis for the fruit basket. Aromas of vanilla and milk chocolate with nuts can be found behind the fruits. Aromatic oak wood, together with a spice/curry mixture with cumin, cardamom but also nutmeg and cinnamon, create a delicate olfactory world. So the malt definitely needs time in the glass and air to develop, then it gets very interesting. With a few drops of water, the vanilla and especially the fruit mixture stand out clearly.
Вкус 86 Undiluted, it glides easily onto the tongue, creamy. There is some sweetness, but less than expected. The spice/curry mixture dominates together with the roasted nuts and a slight spiciness of ginger. The milk chocolate turns a little more into a chocolate with more cocoa content. In contrast to the nose, where the alcohol is most noticeable through a slight mint note, it is more clearly present in the mouth. It becomes drier both on the top of the tongue and at the front of the gums. On the fruit side there are now mainly citrus fruits such as limes and oranges and red berries. In contrast to the nose, adding water brings out more spiciness when it comes to taste. The fruits remain in the background. Overall it seems a bit watery and thinner with just a few drops of water, not really a win.
Финиш 86 The barrel aging wood is picking up speed. But it remains aromatic. Nutmeg and cinnamon, some figs and dates as well as plum jam with dark chocolate and vanilla can be tasted. Overall, the finish has a medium-long lingering effect.
Nosingbär 83 19 feb 2022 7:12 pm
The whisky initially presented itself to me as very short-matured and with a strong alcoholic pungency. The aromas that I still find in the nose disappear in the taste. Cask strength sherry bombs do fit my profile with favorite examples like Aberlour A' Bunadh or the Edradour Single Casks, but this one isn't well rounded, nor is there an interesting load of flavors to transport through the alcohol. When I've almost given up, after about 60 minutes, it becomes even rounder and more mature. The bourbon cask binds itself in more and the alcoholic sharpness largely disappears. It remains a pleasant, if so-so, experience. 83/100.
Нос 86 Anyway, it smells very young. Sherry flavors are moderate and fruity, definitely not first fill, but not many refills either. I have the feeling that the raw brandy smells mainly of pear behind the sherry aromas. The pear comes to light when you push apricot, raisins, prunes and chocolate to the side with sherry aromas. Honey and liquorice are added later.
Вкус 82 Despite dilution, it is still very strong, especially sweet and sour, with a bitter spiciness. Orange peel. With more time it becomes sweeter, it opens up. Caramel is added, but the basic tenor remains bitter green tea.
Финиш 81 In the spicy, medium-length finish, it leaves walnut shells and a memory of dried fruit, as well as a little vanilla.

Another good but boring sherry whisky
Нос 88 Strong sherry nose - prunes, cherry, berries jam, balance with dusty agarwood, and garam masala. Milk biscuit, creamy milk chocolate. After a sip, earthy notes, tabacco, burnt cinnamon, wet wood. With water, more agarwood! Overall quite aromatic nose. but sometimes the oak will overpower the entire nose and make it unbalance.
Вкус 87 Very dense berries, sour cherry, wet oak, some sweetness in the middle, finish with tons of oak bitterness. With water, same notes with hint of curry powder?
Финиш 86 Medium long, oak bitterness.

Wow, that's a cool bottling! After the ingenious Amrut Fusion, still an increase .... so slowly I am becoming a huge Amrut fan. Good for water. With 57.1% vol he has enough power to be diluted a bit. So it will in my opinion a bit rounder and opens more.

Peatbogger has got this spot on. In no way a great whisky, and I struggle to even call it a good one. I don't like slightly overwooded cognac, I like whisky, if you like cognac you should buy this because that is what the profile is, it doesn't taste like whisky. I have tried a few of the Amrut 'whiskies' and have now decided that they are not to my taste, they are overly spicey, hot, and cognacy..... they lack class, finesse and are just not that good. Massively overrated. I wonder why certain people think so highly of them....Could be a matter of taste...but when people call what I consider overt dryness and wood-overdose 'star anise' you have to wonder.... I dunno. Perhaps just a matter of taste. This is a heady whisky imitation made in India but cunningly marketed as an above premium product. The marketting department of Amrut are the real craftsmen in this operation in my opinion. I'll finish the bottle.....but it's not much of joy.

When I first opened it I really didn't like. Way too much ethanol coming off it, and this was overpowering. Also very hot on the palette. It needs some time with air in the bottle (at least a neck poor or slightly more). However surprisingly over time the hidden beauty comes out. I found that with water (or even some ice) interesting smells and flavors come to the surface. A very nice stewed pineapple odor, and taste. Light floral notes, and ripe fruits. Towards the end of the bottle I really found a true appreciation in the metamorphosis that takes place over time, with this whisky and some of the unique elements that present themselves. It takes patience though.
