https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2020/06/30/old-rare-2020-four-glens-part-1-2/ What better demonstrates the appeal of TWE Old & Rare Show than a 25yo 1970s vintage Glen Ord for just £5? Headed by Colin Dunn, Diageo’s J&B had plenty of affordable gems on offer. This Diageo-owned highland distillery is one of the very large distilleries producing 11 million+ litres of spirit a year from two mash tuns that hold 12.6 tonnes of mash and 22 Douglas Fir washbacks that hold 59000 litres each. I’m told their [medium-length] 75-hour fermentation helps promote light fruity esters. Ord produces slightly more sherry-matured whisky [by volume] than bourbon. Their on-site warehouses store around 12,600 casks with around half of their annual spirit output tankered away and filled into casks in Stirling – so you could argue that only of half of Glen Ord’s spirit truly becomes Glen Ord single malt, whilst the rest matures as Stirling Scotch. N: This initially appears as soft as the Glen Mhor, but with significant abv differentials, it’ll no doubt grow and grow – and grow it does with juicy fruits [apricot & strawberry jam], fruit tea, and some rich fruit soft confectionary, the woodiness becoming more apparent as it opens up. What’s amazing, given the stats, is how fresh and vibrant this Ord is. Despite being distilled just eight years after the Glen Mhor, this appears far more lively and contemporary. Is that just the abv or was there also an active cask finish here? Blowing away the ethanol top reveals more earthy & dry plant [scorch-dried cowslip] notes before the sweeter yellow vanilla-ey fruits move in then towards tropical citrus and a wonderful musty malty depth. T&F: Being of beautifully aged bourbon-like malty savoury < sweet citrus on the palate, this one’s development is big and peppery [asking for a little water], but hold it in the mouth either way for a spectacular honeyed mildly-sweet malty citrus mouthfeel and development into a long-long finish. With a little water, you have an exemplary Highland malt, one that glides and glides. No need to overcomplicate things here. That’s one delicious delivery. I resisted [until now], mentioning a fair likeness to a [for now] long-closed distillery further North just off the A9, but I find there to be plenty of similarities. C: Same score as the Glen Mhor, for different reasons, this represents 25-year-old whisky just as well as the previous dram but in a totally different way. Both prove there is no other way we know of, of arriving at these sorts of junctures without a long waiting game.

When I converted my notes from my little notebook to this blog post, I was actually tempted to give this Glen Ord a higher rating. But that would be a mistake, because I find this whisky to be a bit boring. Now this doesn't mean that it is a bad whisky, but it is almost too balanced, if there is such a thing. There are no playful rough edges. It is a simply a good whisky that goes down very easy.

Camphor, metallic notes and rosin come out first, followed by sweet dried fruits and berries, a few technical notes are complemented by candied fruits and a rich cake. After standing a little, the glass gives out tropical notes, mango, papaya.

Tasted in direct comparison with the 30-y.o. (WB3030). Though the older one is a notch better on the nose – deeper, fuller, creamier, more high-end old-age ex-bc aromas – these are both extremely impressive whiskies, right from the get-go: one sniff and you know you're in for a treat. It's interesting that both were bottled between 58 and 59 percent – is that a sweet spot for older Ord?
Нос 94 Rarely do I sample a whisky that makes me think: well, this might actually be worth upwards of 300 € to me personally. This is one of those. Deep, multi-layered, old and stately yet also powerfully present, not boring you even for one single second. Incredible.
Вкус 92 Well drinkable without water if you take smaller sips. An avalanche of honeys, fruits, and spices, hard to untangle. Water unlocks more (well behaved) oak spice. Definitely complex, definitely with some ex-sherry casks in the mix. Also a musky, salty tang gets stronger toward the end of the flavor development. This is a trait that it shares with its older sibling. As to the comparison: this is darker, with more bitters and spiciness; the older one is brighter, sweeter, more geared towards fruits and honeys.
Финиш 92 On the one hand, fruits and flowers, almost a summery touch. Blooming meadows, honey, and the like. On the other hand, a deeper, darker, sherried undertone, replete with spicy, musky notes. Robust, heavy, earthy. What a concerto.

You can twist and turn as you like, but there are too many different flavors to list them all. By no means always perfectly coordinated, but it never gets boring. I even think it's better than the 30-year-old SR version. Both are very similar in structure and taste, remarkable ash…. Incidentally, the alcohol is super integrated, so it can be enjoyed neat, with the comment that the finish comes across better with water. Brilliant, deserves an award!
Нос 90 Oooh, that smells great! :) Delicate and balanced, yet intensely fruity. Profound and complex, ex-bourbon fruit and wood spice go hand in hand here...
Вкус 91 …and say "I do!" Yes, I want to be the spice of your life, and yes, let me be the fruit you never forget—or something like that. ;)

It's a nice profile: malty, bready and toasted. It has enough fruit, but towards the end a bit too much wood influence. A very nice aperitif whisky.
Нос 87 Very malty, and toasted, as the traditional profile of this nice distillery. It's delicate enough, with toast, malt, butter, vanilla, coconut, a pinch of salt, and jasmine tea. Later, roses and peach join the party.
Вкус 88 Punchy enough, with some white pepper. It's full-bodied and medium (barley) sweet. One the one side it's thick and creamy on buns from the oven and vanilla custard, on the other side it's a tad drying from the oak, with (next to the pepper) ginger. A drop of water helps to integrate everything. It gives some additional earthy notes of gentian, plus peach and melon.
Финиш 84 Rather long, but too much dominated by wood influence if you ask me. Ginger and gentian scream for dominance. Then there is still a good portion of malt, green tea, olive oil and coconut.

A bright old-school whisky with a cool, very unusual phenolic, almost perfect taste! A few drops of water make this whisky much more pleasant and sweet. 22 24 23 22

I have never had so many Glen Ords before and this distillery is one of the 10 largest distilleries in Scotland. If every original bottling from Glen Ord with these key data also has this quality, then less really is more. Great whisky. Really good for around 350 euros, as it is 25 years old, almost 60 percent and already 20 years of bottle maturation. A grassy, sweet old-school whisky. The fruit is very subtle, I only notice the orange, peat smoke and salt on the palate, not on the nose.
Нос 91 91.5 In the blender glass, the first nose after 15 minutes is powerful and old-school, i.e. rather grassy and dry, with little fruit. Plus a hint of varnish or nail polish. Very malty, sweetness of honey, Williams pear. Gets sweeter over time, hardly any oak, very round and harmonious. The only criticism is that it is a bit too harmonious and round. 3,600 bottles, so probably at least 7 barrels in this batch. A bit of individuality is lost. In the Glencairn glass the aromas are broader, even a little rougher, than in the blender glass.
Вкус 92 92.5 That's good. Here you can find very subtle peat in the herbal, honey and malt aromas. Very intense and full-bodied, lots of power. The aromas are not particularly complex, but I really like the clean and at the same time strong intensity. These salty aromas and the restrained peat also make it a palate worth at least 92 points. Still powerful with water, but also saltier. A very good swimmer.
Финиш 92 92.5 The mouthfeel has a tingling sweetness with salty aromas (perhaps lemon too), incredibly intense, not a hint of wood. Fantastic. The finish is long and complex and changeable. Yes, that really convinces me. Here too, more complex with water.

Color: Chestnut / Oloroso Sherry. Nose: nail polish remover. Vanilla, freshly cut grass, old, slightly musty hay. Immature pineapple, chestnut blossom, resin. Coconut flakes, freshly cut branches. With water: darker and resinous. Long stored apples, bitter apple peels, polished wood, linden blossom. More coconut, ripe peaches, some incense. Cinnamon. Hot coffee, black bread. Mouth: With water: forest floor, pine needles, dry earth. Fir honey, some anise. Block malt, linden blossom. Freshly cut branches, some soot. Baked apple, orange peel, mango. Even with less than 50% thick and heavy, I am well chewed. Finish: long. Cinnamon and linden blossom, hot coffee, dry bark, freshly cut grass, straw. Pine needles, dry earth. Summer honey, some cinnamon, then block malt and a lot of polished wood. Comment: There seems to have been some relatively fresh wood at work (vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, which everyone besides me really finds in B.), but does it in a subtle way, together with the grassy, tropical-fruity distillate the some ago. You can literally smell it for hours. 92 points.

Nice fabric and pretty ordinary for me with the citrus drops. Plus polished wood, forest honey and ivy. I don't have nail polish remover, coconut or cucumber water, but it's really not that completely clean. With water it becomes even more harmonious and thicker.

Glen Ord SR 25yo has a very well-balanced and refreshing fruity scent. The palate is dominated by strong fruit, with a nectar-like white petal sweetness and a long, long finish. (89) This flavor profile isn't particularly special, but this wine lacks any distinctive characteristics; its flavor is noticeable. (88.5) Glen Ord SR 28yo has a relatively tight aroma with hints of stone, licorice, saltpeter, and aged walnut oil, interspersed with fruit flavors. 88.5 The second one is interesting. The initial taste is fruity and bouncy, followed by a distinct licorice and herbal aftertaste—a unique flavor that adds a lot of fun to the simple fruity notes. 89.5 89 Glen Ord SR 30yo has a more closed aroma; more accurately, the flavor is less pronounced than the previous two, with walnut oil and fruit being the most prominent. 87 The initial flavor is very similar to the first one, with a noticeable fruity acidity that the first one didn't have. It also has a slightly bitter base with white petals, which is quite nice, but not as good as the previous two. (87)

nose: beautiful .. of the citrus, always of the citrus, still of the citrus.ncreatable sensation to walk in the middle of oranges, lemon trees of tangerines, with freshly cut grass and some floral scents. and in the mouth, the show continues. Always diabolically fruity with an addition of toast and dry apricot. the finish is very long and the balance is superb between alcohol, smell and taste. an absolutely remarkable fruit juice concentrate.

Nose: the aroma is pleasant, smooth, rich, adult without the slightest hint of harshness, despite the solid strength. Candy caramel, meadow flowers, honey, dusty cupboard, dried apples, dried apricots, candied fruit, pastries, muesli, a hint of smoke, light perfumery, adult tannins Palate: explosive (this is where you feel the strength!), spicy-floral, caramel, creamy, astringent. Creamy caramel, white pepper, ginger, floral, mineral, pastry, granola, honeyed sweetness, crisp board Finish: Astringent, warming, sweet, malty, honeyed, with white pepper, light minerality and oak astringency Balance: an adult, but at the same time bright, rich and open highlander with a honey-floral profile and a noticeable influence of sherry. A very calm and measured nose, explosive taste and a bright, long aftertaste will leave pleasant emotions from communicating with this whisky N23,P22,F22,B22
