Certainly a pleasant whisky but not really 'value for money'

The purchase is already a party, the packaging is phenomenal. The taste is complex, caramel, citrus, pepper and wood flavors.

Talkingblends Review No. 12 Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt Whisky, 47,3%, 2011 Including Malts from The Dalmore and Glen Mhor, between 8 and 30 years old. This is a lot of story to cover in a short writing and review, but it’s a great story so lets try. Ernest Shackleton started his “Nimrod” expedition to the Antarctic in 1907. Due to extreme weather conditions he and his men had to leave Antarctica suddenly in 1909 leaving behind most of their stuff including cases of…Macinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt Whisky!. Almost a century later an expedition team of the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust found the expedition hut and could safe one crate of whisky from the ice and snow. Master blender Richard Paterson replicated the Shackleton whisky with parcels of contemporary stocks of whisky also using whisky from Glen Mhor (closed in 1983) which was at Shackletons time the base malt fort the blend. Nose: oily, bit leather, older lighter fruits, sweet dried grass/hay, dusty wood, a little peat and honey sweetness in the back Taste; light peppers, honey sweetness, a nice modest peat with some honey. It presents itself with a minty freshness altough I do not mean that there is mint to it. There a warmer elements too; bready, warm spices. There’s also some roughness like from dry dusty oak. Finish; a soft and round mouthfeel, with a harmony of citrus-zest bitterness, peaty, sawdust dryness in the back of the mouth. An expert who tasted the original and this replica is strongly positive about the resemblance. For me tasting this blend gives me an historical sensation, its touching a thing from the past. The blend is forward in presentation, a bit rough and dusty while peat and sweet and bitterness form a characterprofile resembling the people that were hardened by demanding physical work in a time where toughness was needed to stay alive. A least in my mind. I like this dram, really do. You can still find it at auctions. 88/100
