tasting as part of the Whisky Dram festival in Kyiv, Ukraine on November 2, 2024. Light smoke, and it's unexpected, but nice... The taste is sharp and the aftertaste is quite dry, interesting but not at all what I expected, a new concept of batches, well... 21 21 20 21 83

I've enjoyed the 2024 edition of Kilkerran 16 a lot since opening the bottle. I deliberately waited a bit to add my notes, as Kilkerran tends to change with exposure to oxygen. But no, the positive first impression remains; I think I'm in love. Comparison with Kilkerran 16 (2023) I left a small amount in my 2023 Kilkerran 16 to compare with the next batch. It's quite funny, when I read through my tasting notes for the 2023 batch: I liked the 2022 batch, but it lacked a bit of dirt for my taste. The 2023 batch had exactly the dirt I was missing in the 2022 batch – and I attributed it to the high proportion of sherry casks (60%). The 2024 batch seems dirtier to me than all the previous batches. And is the sherry cask proportion high here, as in the 2023 batch? No, quite the opposite! For comparison: 2023: 60% sherry, 35% bourbon, 5% rum 2024: 70% Bourbon, 20% Sherry, 10% Rum Wtf?!, as the younger generation would put it.
Нос 91 It starts off fruity, fresh, and distinctly maritime. Grapefruit, quince jelly, rosehip, fresh cut flowers, and salty sea spray, which carries a hint of machine oil and the tangy, fresh scent of North Sea crab. Vanilla crescents, fresh cake base.
Вкус 91 A velvety, creamy opening, sweet mandarins, quince jelly, apricots and nectarines, a hint of pineapple. Maritime and blessed with a good portion of "Campbeltown dirt" (my personal term for what, in my opinion, makes Campbeltown bottlings Campbeltown bottlings—others use a different term for this, but I simply can't bring myself to use it). A slowly emerging woody dryness that sits alongside the still-present fruit. Salt and pepper, a touch of marjoram, vanilla, honey, fudge with Guinness (a bit more bitter than straight fudge).
Финиш 90 Medium to long, pleasantly dry. Just as the creamy opening was just the right start, this dry, still fruity and maritime finish is the perfect farewell.

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2025/11/28/dramdiary-sessions-nov-2025/ C: All is well with this batch, smelling & tasting in accord with its makeup – of [70%] ex-bourbon, [20%] sherry, and 10% rum – with a waxy vegetal ex-bourbon drive and finishing with Tooon chocolate, toasted nibs, and a wood smoke complexity. Celebrating batch variation, try before you buy for both the 16yo and the 12yo, and catch the releases that suit your palate.

The Kilkerran 16 Batch 24/107, which I received from a tasting set, is an honest, characterful Campbeltown whisky with a robust profile. Grain, oil, maritime freshness, light smoke, and darker, sweet notes combine to create a harmonious whole. Those who enjoy similar bottlings will likely also appreciate the Kilkerran 12, Springbank 10, or Springbank 15. Not a simple crowd-pleaser, but a whisky with character.
Нос 88 A powerful opening with grainy and bready notes, along with caramel and wood. These are followed by oily hints, a touch of gasoline, light phenolic notes, and a subtle smokiness. With time, maritime impressions, light fruit, and a pleasant depth emerge. ..
Вкус 84 A spicy start with noticeable heat, followed by a rounder and more balanced flavor. Dark chocolate, sweetness, and an oily texture dominate. Vanilla and marzipan emerge later, along with hints of wood and spices. ..
Финиш 85 Rather short to medium length. Woody notes, dark cocoa, and slightly bitter tones linger. A subtle sherry impression emerges at the end.

I loved the 2023 release (scored it 89), but think this is even better. The balance of casks is nigh on perfect for the Kilkerran spirit. Super value, too.

For the Core Range it is superb, very enjoyable, the rum is perceptible and creates a very satisfying and complex profile. The fact that such a product is relatively available is the cherry on the cake. Price performance: Very good. Would I buy it again?: Yes!

Bourbon barrel start then rum and sherry to finish gives this dram a fruity soft taste with a touch of peat barely noticeable. The fresh fruits and maritime influence hit you , pineapples, apricots and mango with vanilla undertones and a peppery finish. Nice dram indeed.

Shortly after opening, the alcohol was still quite rough on the nose. With air in the bottle and a little more time to stand, it was much better on the second tasting. Beautiful, classic Kilkerran that reminds me a lot of the 12 with a bit more balance and maturity. Well made, but would have liked to have stayed under 100€
Нос 88 At the beginning it is a little pungently alcoholic, but then it becomes sweet with notes of fresh malt, lemon drops, vanilla, light wood and grapes. There is also a fine minerality, a little soot and the typical wood smoke.
Вкус 87 Oily and solid, it glides across the tongue. Citrus drops up front, followed by light grapes and malt sweetness. Significantly less wood smoke and salt. Nice and round and harmonious, but maybe a bit boring.
Финиш 89 Medium-long finish. Initially distinct smoke and malt sweetness. Some sweetness and bitterness alternate. Minerality and ginger spiciness on the cheeks.
BarleyMail 87 23 oct 2025 2:14 pm
Нос 88 Lemon, orange (Fanta), honey, marzipan, green apple, pear, ginger, vanilla cake, and tropical fruit (mango, nectarine, passion fruit). It's also "green," maritime, and quite waxy on the nose.
Вкус 87 Good mouthfeel. Lemon, orange, ginger, salty, marzipan, honey, kiwi, mango, and a bit of candy (sour).
Финиш 87 Ginger and citrus fruit linger for a while. I had a really hard time accepting this Kilkerran. It took a few months before I actually liked it; initially, I found it a bit too "green." But it all turned out fine!

F: some.oak never bitter..chemical moments..marzipane...young juicy ginger..some lemonpeel..sawdust Not the most complex dram but beautiful and intense on all notes..super round with some edges..I love it sure it will change with time open..I like the idea that this is an upgrade version of SB10.

A lovely Kilkerran, a bit more mature after 16 years, but still powerful. Subtle smoke. Interestingly, you can't detect either the smoke or the sherry casks in the smell.
Нос 85 First citrus notes (lemon, lime, mandarin), blackcurrant, then some hay meadow and a few sweet notes, milk chocolate,
Вкус 87 Now comes the Kilkerran-typical smoke, sweet malt, some honey and lemon, but then immediately the spice from the wood, some candied ginger, white pepper, cinnamon, cloves....
Финиш 86 Smoky sweet, with a few mild tannins but not drifting into bitterness. quite long

This kilkerran is doing it so well... Natural color, non chill filtered, decent abv, 16yo... Check, check, check, check. The price wasn't too bad either! Not a 90, but very close if you ask me right now. Will need to revisit at some point to verify. Wonderful dram and sooooooo much better then i remember the 12yo.

Tasted next to the 16 year old from 2023. Very similar, but the rum casks are more noticeable. There is more sweetness and less of the soft mineral. The sherry casks also speak a little more here with a little bit of sulphur and typical Campbeltown funk. For me this one does not win over the one from the previous year. I am already looking forward to the 2025 version and am curious about the cask distribution.

I have the same whisky, but it was bottled in 2025. In a direct comparison, the nose is very different. The 2022 Killerran is significantly milder, more summery, and simpler in its aromatic profile.
Chrisn79 89 22 sep 2024 5:54 pm
In no way inferior to the 2023 bottling. Compared to the first batches, it is a bit more voluminous and complex due to the rum content and a little more sherry (thank God refill). The first bourbon-heavy batches had impressive mineral citrus notes and a fresh maltiness. Now since 2023, with a little more cask influence, there is still enough of the distillate left, but the whisky becomes a little spicier and sweeter due to the rum, but without being heavier or even overpowered by the sherry. Perfect summer-autumn whisky!
joshua861 85 08 apr 2026 5:48 pm
Nice whisky for about 65€, but I would not pay significantly more than that.
Нос 86 fresh lemony notes with delicate campbelltown-funk and a subtle saltiness or minerality. Smoke is not directly recognizable. Little fruit notes, rather sour, salty, mineral and funky. Gets more buttery, sweeter and even gets distant fruit notes over time.
Вкус 85 Mineralic. Again more sensations, than explicit tasting notes. Not quite as easy to grasp as the nose. Typically rather sour with a reasonable amount of woodspice. Yellow fruits shine through every now and then. Again becomes more buttery over time. Taste is basically the same as the nose, just not as clear.
Финиш 85 Creamy and buttery on the tongue after swallowing. Spice lingers on the rest of the mouth. Stays quite long on the palate.

A beautiful bottling, not for all time, but it thrilled me at just the right moment. Above all, it's idiosyncratic and anything but interchangeable. You don't find that every day.
Нос 89 A broad, grainy nose; after a few weeks of aeration in the bottle, it's immediately apparent. Sweet, tart, tropical fruits, and minerally gritty notes – warm hay, summer blossom honey, thyme, slightly burnt porridge, pineapple, sandalwood, and pebbles. But burnt.
Вкус 90 Perhaps I'm just fixated on it, but I think I can clearly taste the rum cask influence. A warm undertone of brown sugar completes this full-bodied, malty, and earthy whisky. Malt, honey, thyme, apricot-pineapple-papaya mash, alcohol rises esterily into the trachea when inhaled, slightly bitter wood tickles the tongue, licorice and cayenne pepper, lamp oil and brown sugar.
Финиш 86 Medium length, the impression of fermenting fruit is created, overripe apples, browning banana, nutshells, stale green tea that is turning sour, not smoky, but burnt.
Rittergold 86 23 apr 2025 4:03 am
At first, I would have guessed it was higher than 46% the alcohol is oddly not well incorporated on the nose. Once the bottle is open for a while, it starts to come together bether. It has a big silky mouthfeel. with plenty of tropical fruits. The peat is an earthier supporting base note that gives it heft to balance all the fruits that come in from the bourbon and rum casks. Delicious, but perhaps a bit too smooth and elegant for me. I like my Kilkerrans a bit funkier. Nose - unripe fruit, gooseberry, green melon, almost green gummy bears, sweet grass, parsley, old leather, moss, slight malty note, when it sits for a long time, you start to get funky, dunnage Taste - Sweet and full, a party of apricots and banana, with the just the lightest wood smoke underneath, and then mid palate, there's a earthy and and stoney peat that arrives which turns the overall vibe mellow, some ginger spice, Finish - apricots, stones, earthy, wet sucker stick
Lasnor 88 23 may 2026 4:53 am
Kilkerran 16 is on the same level as Cask Strength 8. I imagine the difference in batch size will influence the decision of which is better between the two. When in doubt, try both.

Lots of tropical fruits, which are very present, especially pineapple, with a fair bit of dry wood spice and minerality, a hint of Campbeltown funk, and stronger than expected alcohol. Where is this gentler Kilkerran everyone seems to talk about? (Granted, I don't want a gentler Kilkerran.) This one's less oily, more tropical, but also feels stronger with alcohol. I enjoy it and it's interesting, but I still prefer the 12yo in just about every category.
AlanMcK 91 23 mar 2026 9:25 pm
Could Kilkerran really rival Springbank? The Kilkerran 16 (2024) makes a compelling case—it’s among the finest whiskies I’ve tasted. Perhaps it’s heightened by the fact it was a gift from a dear friend, but even setting sentiment aside, it stands on its own merits. The rum cask influence is unmistakable on both nose and palate, bringing waves of tropical fruit and gentle sweetness. What’s remarkable is how expressive this character is, given rum casks make up just 10% of the maturation. A soft, earthy peat weaves through it all, leaving a delicate hint of ash on the finish. It’s a beautifully balanced dram, where subtlety and character coexist effortlessly.
Benny85 85 27 jan 2026 10:16 pm
I think this is not a remarkable whisky. it's too clean and too shallow. it is not bad - but you would want more from a KK16 imo. Just go for the 8 year sherry - that is a way better bargain!!

This whisky is hands down the best core range whisky you can get under 100 euros (for now—hopefully, they don’t raise the price on this). It's everything whisky needs to be. I must say: I hate peat. But the tiny little amount of peat in there adds so much depth. It's not a burning or disgusting peat—it just highlights the fruity aromas of the whisky: magnificent!
