Let's re-review the winner of the Online Scotch Whisky Awards (OSWAs) in the category 'best entry-level bottling'. The nose of Arran 10 features a lovely tropical fruit complexity, think pineapple, mango and lemon cream. Hints of milk chocolate, cereals and butterscotch gain momentum. On the palate, the rich and juicy mouthfeel is flanked by sour berries, peaches and wood spices. Lime juice, apricot jam and pepper round off the taste, while the finish lingers with honey, ginger and a touch of cider. No wonder this malt is so popular, it's a modern classic! At an evening in our whisky club dedicated to this distillery, we tried this whisky, with the code L 15 04 24. Young, a little prickly in taste, but overall quite a decent basic whisky for drinking, I haven't expected anything special from this release for a long time, so everything is ok, - 20 21 20+ 20 82

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2026/02/09/bottle-polishing-three-core-classics/ Now in its 32nd year of production [if my calculations are correct], Lochranza distillery and its core range 10 has been an enthusiast’s staple for a while now. I planned to keep a few samples back, as I do for the majority of bottles I buy and open – especially those I’m likely to replace so that I may compare & contrast core expressions through the years. In this particular case, the bottle disappeared with such speed that I failed to even take a photo. N: At times, I could think there’s some corn whisky in the mix, not that ex-bourbon casks dominate. Indeed, nothing is off or out of place. Reminding me of Balvenie’s Double Wood of old, this is a citrusy, aromatically peppered, malty, fruity [many apples] cereal-led number, only becoming more so as the months rolled by. Add to that, floral touches, a vegetal quality – say lettuce and artichoke hearts – and a hessian attribute. All in all, a good read. T: Boy, that abv delivers. With such an intensely cereal-wrapped fruity citrusy burst on arrival, it’s hard to take it all in at first. If no corn whisky, I would suggest that it’s more towards Cornflakes, though I find it far closer to Kellogg’s Start – a [blast from the past] cereal with its own Wikipedia page. Intense opening, yes, but one that soon finds its feet. Malty again, oily and waxy, ever savoury and cereal-oily-dry lemon-sour with a modest slick bitter-charred licourice – pretty much Arran all over. F: Arran’s spirit shows, with a considered pepper-seasoned cereal-bound textured maltiness and a desirable touch of sour citrus and straw dryness – very much in keeping with the main theme. I hear Ralfy too, on his thoughts that Arran has ventured into the feints, not for profit, but for flavour. Finding much of the action at the back of the palate, adding water allows for a wider delivery across the tongue. Remaining cereal-faithful, citrusy, the [orchard > confectionery] fruitiness is lowkey due to the decidedly savoury & [Dalwhinnie-esque] sour nature with a considered oiliness via a commendably controlled astringency. C: A bottle I’ll be replacing without question. At 30 euros, it remains one of the very best entry-level malts around, fully deserving of its continuing OSWA accolades.
There's simply nothing to fault here.

Honey and buttered toast, brown sugar, peanut butter. White fruits and lemon, banana, and even a touch of pineapple and papaya. Behind, a pinch of salt, the sea air, the tide. Woody notes, young wood full of sap. On the palate, it's a little light but pleasant, a trickle of creamy vanilla with a zest of lemon meringue, yellow plum pulp, lively spices, white pepper, cumin. Robust but a little short finish, roasted pineapple, bamboo and palm trees, hazelnuts. A slice of lime, rose water. It's pretty well done, and the influence of the Sherry Hogsheads brings something extra, fruitiness and some nuts. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2024/12/arran-10-yo.html

For the money a real winner!
The distillery writes The Classic Arran on the label. A whisky that is constantly hyped and that sweeps the OSWAs. In 2021 it was voted the best single malt Scotch whisky there, but since the start of these awards in 2021 it has also led the first category, which was initially called best entry level and has been best value single malt since 2023. There is already a review here - but I wanted to try it again. Classic is a fitting description, because it is actually a simple whisky with no frills. And at the Lochranza Distillery that means above all: uncolored and not chill-filtered. The maturation probably took place in ex-bourbon casks, but the strong golden color also shows that these still had enough power to give something to the whisky. glen-efze.de

It's been a long time I've tried Arran 10yo. The last time was the old label 100 proof (or cask strength?) one, and I think this one's an improvement.
A very solid entry level malt, probably one of the best 10-year-old bottling in the market.

Green apple, barley husk, raw sweet potato, vanilla, cider "A solid entry-level with a bit of grain-forward character" Overall, the nose is pleasant and balanced, without any major flaws. However, there’s a noticeable presence of barley husk and raw sweet potato—grainy notes typical of a younger spirit. |

Overall, the characteristics of the bourbon cask are strong, and if you consciously look for sherry after writing the review, the vanilla scent that suppresses the bright floral scent has a raisin-like feel. The balance and the copper finish are a bit disappointing, but overall, I think it will be enjoyable to drink on a daily basis. Wouldn’t it be possible for whisky to become quite popular if it becomes more accessible?

There is a bit of buzz. - The bright floral and honey scents are strongly felt first. However, the brightness of the flowers mixes a little inappropriately with the vanilla scent, so it is not completely bright, but rather a brightness that seems to be suppressed. - Feels like an unripe banana. Banana flavor lacking sweetness mixed with a slight grassy flavor. - The cool scent of pear - Fruity scent of apple - It has a slightly spicy, ginger-like sensation. - The lemon zest also adds a tangy feeling. It has lemon-like citrus, but has a slightly bitter taste. - Fragrance mixed with tropical fruits. Lychee, pineapple, etc. come to mind. : N Summary - The balance is a little disappointing, but overall it feels good. |

It also has a half-ginger-like feel. - Sweet scent of apple, tropical fruit scent with pineapple being the most noticeable - Oily taste with the bitter taste of cacao. Caramel, dark wood, dried fruit, candied fruit, it has an alcoholic and spicy note, but like clove oil (or eugenol), there's a balsamic extract of fruit wine, dates, honey, vanilla, chocolate, light roast coffee, red balsamic vinegar, orange peel with clove (but it's not citrusy). A good example of ex-Sherry (I don't know if it is, but it seems like it), neither too sweet nor too dry, but if the spiciness were less it would reach perfection. Now at the end, malt, roasted cereals, black bread with honey and pudding with its syrup appear. With water it remains fiery, but it has become sweeter (honey, vanilla, caramel, dark chocolate, caramelized dried fruits and candied fruits). |

Liked the older 10 a bit better, but overall just a slight change in style, not as "orangey" anymore imho and a bit wilder, less balanced than the old 10 out of the bottle. Perhaps with much air things'll change? Still good bang for the buck, but perhaps almost too "extreme" to start a beginners' tasting with.

Update: December 2021 I will bump my old rating up by one... this is mega. Fresh oak, honey, not quite candied ripe fruits, herbs. More herbal and cereal focus on the palate, and that tobacco ash finish! A mini masterpiece. A wonderfully vibrant 10-year old - showing the industry how it's done! Doesn't pull any punches or aim at being soft or smooth - this one is full of flavour, so it deserves a bit of time. Orchard and tropical fruit balanced with fresh green wood, softened by the ex-bourbon cask usual suspects of vanilla and honey.

Nose: Very citrus-rich, lemon cake with frosting, sweet apples, marzipan, sage, fennel tea (but fortunately only a little, hate the stuff actually), Werther's real, milk chocolate, here and there a red fruit without exact assignment. Vineyard peach, Nashi pear, yes that smells like a typical mixture of bourbon and sherry casks for me .. Taste: Nice mouthfeel, fermented apple, pressed sweet apple and pear juice, dark honey, subliminal roast aromas, hazelnut, cocoa, a bit of sea breeze. The citrus fruits from the nose, I think not so right back. Finish: medium-long, again cocoa, dark honey, no bitterness, full-bodied chocolate, blood orange. Very solid standard with the certain Inselkick, but the citrusy nose you have to like, is really very dominant.

Very tasty standard with an indication of age, a solid 46% by volume and without chill filtration plus E150a. For me a typical ex-bourbon profile: vanilla, sweetness and oak. In the short to medium-length finish, the wood is then dominant. Hopefully this whisky will remain permanently available at this price. Unfortunately, that is not the case with an 18-year-old from the same family.
Worth all the attention it gets. Fresh, vibrant fruity enjoyable dram. Layered complex and engaging pineapples, citrus, peaches, crispy, zesty, refreshingly dry, malty, warm spicy . A true winner for a bourbon cask dram which for the price is great bang for bucks.
Arran 10 year old, SMSW, 46%. It’s been a long time. I last picked up a bottle of this around 2011 – memorable because I had just moved to London and my wife’s brother in law came over. I offered him a glass of this and he hated it, calling it ‘cheap shite’. I didn’t know anything about whisky at the time, and my view was probably influenced by his. Over the past year or so I’ve seen some positive reviews, so I picked up this 30ml sample to see for myself - with the benefit of some experience. Consumed at home June 2024. A mid-tone yellow. Aroma is soft and delicate – pleasant light notes of honey, honeysuckle, orange blossom, apple juice, moving to vanilla oak – softly biscuity. Becomes a little ‘margarine’ over time, which isn’t my favourite profile, but on the whole it has a lovely delicate aroma with some complexity. Body is watery. Taste is salted rusks up front. Quite a simple profile. Basic salty spirit with light biscuity oak. Subtlest passion fruit in the background. Finishes short with some firey ginger. Better on the aroma than on the palate, but pretty good on both. A clean, enjoyable whisky that I’d expect most whisky drinkers to get on quite well with, although it’s not a dram that will surprise or excite too much. I’d have no qualms reaching for it on a regular basis and the £40 asking price is very fair. 3.5/84

A very good 10-year-old whisky that you can keep permanently shelved for the price. Absolutely nothing to complain about!
The new bottle design is nice - distinctive and understated, much better than Bladnoch’s for example. But the contents is what matters, and the whisky is very solid and satisfying. The nose is on vanilla and oak spices, the palate adds some grassy notes. The lack of sweetness is surprising and works well. The whole is not complicated but very well crafted and integrated. There are no off notes. It sounds simple but given how many distilleries fail to accomplish this these days gives pause.

Over time this whisky has become one of my favorites. I'm glad Arran charges a reasonable price for it. Edit: In the meantime, either my taste has changed or Arran has changed his whisky, I have no idea what it is, in any case it doesn't taste as good to me as it did in the beginning. The rounded aroma is dominated by peach jam with grapefruit zest and caramel. The sweet taste includes boiled fruits, oranges, peaches and unripe pineapples. Medium-length finish, astringent, nutty lemon. The new ten hits my head better than the old one, which was cocky, bourbon and very ruffy, the Arrans are great for changing it. A nice harmonious beginner who has a really nice nose and a good taste and finish. The barrel occupancy is not disclosed by Arran. Above all, the smell suggests bourbon barrels - at least 2nd fill. Some wood influences can be seen in the smell and finish, this could be due to Virgin Oak barrels. Is he eligible for an award? Matter of opinion. For a beginner it is really very good, harmonious and with a price of around € 35, - has a great price / performance ratio.

Easy on the palate, good dose of cane sugar, simple sweetness, light oak, good amount of barley, toffee, dried fruits, dates, a bit of mint. Second chew gets a bit more spicy, peppery, and also brings vanilla cream as well as lemon oil. Really quite good. On the third chew it gets drier, with slight leather notes, light tobacco leaves, a bit of fresh grass, dried herbs, some liquorice, vague hint of smoke. Really well made as easy drinkers go. |

Good affordable starter. Unchilfiltered, 46% and without dye.. as it should be! I think maturing in European oak which makes it wonderfully complicated
Ralfys Whisky of the year so we have to try it right? ;) Werther's Echte ( cream caramel drops) Fresh Wood, some polish Vanilla, and apples, peaches and some milky chocolate / slight cinnamon in the finish ... from start to finish. The alc. is quite well away integrated. you can sense it a bit in the nose and palate. Its quite good but far away from the old 14 even though I didn't rate it high here...had it on the beginning of my journey couldn't appreciate things I do now. Def. This Can't hide the youth imo. For the start a solid 83.P Price/Performance is ok. No way to be near a 90. After some glasses: it wins with time and few drops of water gets less harsh (the polish in the nose goes away) still far away from comparable single casks/ cask strength whiskies /85
Beautifully light fruity, alcohol well integrated, sparkling spring and summer whisky, great standard for the home bar

Really great value for the money.
The nose starts off honey-sweet with light, almost unripe fruit notes (gooseberries, pear skin) and a hint of a freshly sharpened pencil. The unripe fruits jump out at you in the mouth, followed by spicy notes on the tongue. He looks very soft and slightly acidic. In the finish it swings into spicy-nutty wood tones, accompanied by dark chocolate and sour grapes. Length: 5/10 All in all a nice, round everyday whisky, which offers a lot for the paper form, but also seems a bit immature and sour. Rating: B+

3.9 The scent is quite floral + Sherry It has a slightly smokey bunahaven feel as it rolls on the tongue. In terms of taste, I think it's a pretty harmonious mix of butterscotch and sherry. Strong malt flavor, followed by sherry, then butterscotch Rather than complex, it feels like drinking bright sherry with Scotch Candy. ready to drink Slightly fermented apple taste..? It's not angular and it's easy to drink, but it's a bit boring

The Arran 10 is undoubtedly one of the best 10-year-old single malts on the market. Its profile is beautifully malty and sweet. A generous dose of ginger spice gives it the necessary punch. The sweetness of caramel, vanilla, and fruit harmonizes wonderfully. The value for money for this quality is almost unbeatable. The Arran 10 deserves a place on every bar shelf.

I was really curious for this one, given the buzz around it. Although I do agree this tastes like a balanced quality product, the overall profile isn’t for me. I do enjoy it, but it’s just not that interesting to me for some reason. Maybe I miss a touch of sherry, or some peat, or some more saltiness or funk. Who knows. Since I have a bottle now, I’l get plenty more opportunity to see if it grows on me but this is it for now. EDIT - a couple months and half a bottle later: This bottle keeps growing on me. It's still not a standout profile to me, but it's a so well done balanced and full taste that I'm reaching for this more often than before. Added a point, 83 -> 84+

I treated myself to it in a bar once. Very pronounced fresh bourbon cask notes right from the start, the alcohol is very well integrated. There's also a decent maltiness. A very successful, easy sipper. It won't blow you away, but it's probably always acceptable. A qualitative improvement over the classic 40-43% Bourbon cask standards from Speyside.
Fresh, fruity flavor - apples, pears, tropical fruits, chocolate with a delicate presence of salt and a spicy finish - spices, cinnamon.
Wow, as soon as I opened the bottle, I smelled a very special smell, a fresh, clean blend of orange peel, coconut, sea breeze, banana, sugar-like sweetness, I have not experienced this kind of taste in other whiskies, I must be this Features of Arran. In terms of pure and refreshing Bourbon cask whisky, I thought it would be similar to Tobermory 12yo or Dalwhinne 15yo, but it turned out to be very distinctive, more pure and sea breeze, with a special orange peel and coconut, banana smell, I Love the feature a lot, and for a 10yo whisky, he's doing so well it's almost unmatched! Can't feel the 46% abv at all, the refreshing feeling is like drinking juice, the throat tells me that he likes the fresh taste. I think this performance is not inferior even at the 15 years old level, a very good whisky. Definitely going to be a regular in my wine cabinet. The taste score is 88 points, and the price does not affect the score.

Arran 10 is like a well-written poem: nothing wasted, everything intentional. It’s an honest dram, youthful but self-aware, with just enough complexity to make you appreciate it more with every sip. It bridges fresh fruit, mellow sweetness, and a touch of Highland spice, all wrapped in an approachable 46% ABV. This is what I call a "go-to daily sipper with integrity." If I had to describe it in one word: refreshing.

This one opens bright and vivid — a clean, expressive Highland breeze in a glass. First comes that fresh green apple and lemon zest, almost like standing in an orchard just after a spring rain. Then it gets a little richer with notes of honeyed barley, vanilla custard, and a dusting of cinnamon. There's a soft fruity layer that reminds me of peach skin, a bit of pear, and even a touch of apricot jam. Light floral undertones flicker in and out, giving it a fresh, natural feel. I love how honest this nose is — no fancy tricks, just a solid, orchard-fresh malt with a pinch of warmth from the casks. Pure Highland charm with an Island whisper. |

Bright, malty and energetic. There’s an immediate citrus pop, then smooth transitions to vanilla fudge, light toffee, and a creamy, almost buttery texture that gently coats the tongue. The oak brings subtle spice — clove, nutmeg, and even a touch of white pepper — all beautifully integrated. The sherry influence adds a subtle layer of dried fruits — sultanas, hazelnuts, and a faint raisin bread note — but never overwhelms the clean malt base. What stands out here is balance — the vibrancy of youth meets just enough depth to keep things interesting. It doesn’t try to be bold or heavy — it just delivers a delicious, straightforward dram you want to return to. |

Medium-long, and quite satisfying. The fruit lingers — mostly citrus and pear — with trailing notes of honey, light malt, and gentle spice. There’s a nice nutty dryness near the end, like almond skin or light oak tannin, but nothing too bitter. It finishes fresh, not sweet — clean and quietly persistent. This finish doesn’t try to steal the spotlight — it supports the whole experience. It’s not the type to shout, but it does nod back politely as it leaves the room. |

Too hot and too simple. Classic Laddie and Hazelburn 10 are better choices for a similar dram. I think Barr an Uisce from Ireland is not much better than this.
Sample with unknown bottle code, but more likely from 2023/2024: On the nose, it's rather reserved for me. Some citrus fruit, malt, and apple. Taste: Fuller than on the nose, with strong malt, green apple, and a touch of acidity. Oak is evident on the finish. It's quite dry at the end for its age. A decent 10, but I honestly don't understand the hype some people are making about it.

I like this style. Arran malt goes so nice with both sherry and bourbon and they don't seem to overdo it either. I'd say this is well-balanced. Too bad it's not a 12 yo. I think a couple more years would really make it nice.

Rich but spicy. This one is a little spicier than most of the entry level sherried malts. Pears and cinnamon mostly. On the sweeter side but tastefully done. It has that relatively superficial sweet sherry thing that is pretty easy to spot if you've had some old sherries or old sherried whiskies. |

Top 1/3rd: Nose - extremely vaporous, paint thinner. If there are flavors, they are hidden by the vapors. Water brings out an occasional indistinct creamy, roundness. Decanted the middle 1/3rd to save for trying again in 6-12 months. Bottom 1/3rd: flat. Flavorless. I do not get any impressions from drinking this. Perhaps an inactive cask or poor/rushed distillation to meet increased demand. Disappointing at best because I really had high hopes for this.
