В аромате доминируют скошенная трава, свежие травы и садовые фрукты (груша, яблоко), цитрусы и тропические ноты, вересковый мёд и воск, поверх которых лежит тонкий, хорошо встроенный слой торфяного дыма; отмечают лесную сырость, мох, табак и элегантную сложность, необычную для двенадцатилетнего возраста. Во вкусе — фруктовая сладость, лимон с мёдом, груша и имбирь, лёгкая пряность и восковая маслянистость с деликатной дымностью; тело для 43% держится плотно. Послевкусие среднее: перечное, суховатое, с горчинкой дуба, мятой и травянисто-минеральным шлейфом, у части — коротковатое и сбивающееся в спиртуозность. Опытные ревьюеры оценивают напиток стабильно высоко (в основном 84–88), хваля гармоничность, характер и зрелость выше заявленных лет, и видят в нём идеальное введение в торфяной стиль как альтернативу резким айлам; расхождения невелики и сводятся к пожеланию большей мощи. Оценки остальных так же кучно держатся в диапазоне 81–90, но именно среди них встречается резкий выброс (68) с критикой парфюмерных, мыльных и водянисто-искусственных нюансов, напоминающих нелюбимый ирландский стиль. Although Hakushu 12 doesn't have the caliber of Yamazaki, it is certainly a characterful and distinctly different Japanese single malt. Featuring floral and grassy notes, the aroma is quite complex with fresh herbs, heather honey and citrus fruits. A thin layer of delicate peat smoke is well-integrated. On the palate, the fruity-sweet arrival turns into zesty but rather mild peatiness, dominated by herbal freshness. The moderate finish is peppery, slightly dry and leaves with a hint of oak bitterness. Overall, a harmonic and nicely composed malt with character. RATING: 3.9/5.0 stars ≙ 86 pts → FIRST-CLASS [-]

N: Wth a fatty and buttery body, it’s a fruity [Speyside style] malt with luscious and rolling tropical & orchard fruits. T: Rich lush lemon honey dunnage-y malt that suggests a maturity beyond those 12 stated years. Then comes the smoke whilst the waxy & fatty spirit continues to sing. F: Sustained sweet honeyed smokey barley juice, finishing with clean toasted dry/smokey malty & milky Cocoa Pops. C: Does all the things a whisky should do. The ideal introduction to peaty whisky and a great alternative besides the ashtray Islay’s. Goes straight on the ‘to buy list’.Scores a B[+]

N- Candy sweet, cereal husk. grassy smokes. Orchard fruits extract, fresh morning dew and cooling mist. P- Pear, ginger and berries. Herb spicy at the back. Dry with a layer of thin waxy mouthfeel. F- Medium long with persistent minty aftertaste at the tail. — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur.

First the nose is very fruity, with juicy apples and pears, orchard fruits, it is very herbaceous, cut grass, angelica, and a very light layer of peat, which gives a marshy character to the whole. Forest undergrowth, plant moss, pistachio, chlorophyll. On the palate, it is gourmand, icing sugar, lime, candied fruits. Spices barely noticeable. RMB 1100/bottle I feel like I could keep savoring it forever. I don't think there's really this flavor in Scotch whisky. That's why it's more expensive and hard to find a cheaper alternative.

Nice standard and a typical representative of the Japanese whisky, you should definitely have tried. Harmonious, harmonious and gentle, like many Japanese, yet with an independent character with dominating citrus fruits and grassy notes. The aroma appears with leather, sweetness, light rottenness, perfume, fruits and cream brûlée notes. I feel some very gentle peated notes. The palate has dried fruits, spicy, dry and light smoke notes. The finish is a middle, sweet with vanilla, dried fruits and spicy notes.

For me the widespread enthusiasm for the Hakushu is unfortunately not understandable. The grassy freshness with a bit of fruit has potential, but the perfume and almost soapy nuances that remind me of some Irish whiskys that I don't really like, clearly cloud the enjoyment for me. Quite sharp on the nose almost alcohol forward as they say. Light summer notes of sweet vanilla and oak. Getting a bit of nail polish remover. On palate getting a dusty caramel vanilla note. After a few minutes in the glass the flavour notes really shine. Floral perfumes, forest damp mold, oak - could be Japanese oak anyway quite unique and tasty. A bit too pricy for me for what it is so will not move beyond a sample.

This is a characterful classic, very drinkable and rewards focus and intention, as it can come off a bit flat. This is a very balanced old school malt, aspiring to be in the austere mold such as with Hazelburn/Kilkerran.

A sample given by a friend although I already had an unopened bottle! A solid malt but the nose was much better than the mouth. Slightly disappointing. It will be interesting to see if my bottle differs at all.
