Although he's a proud 21 years old, he's not a creamy soft-spoken guy, as you might have expected. The smoky note is clearly evident at the beginning and end and may have contributed to the fact that this is not a classic Irish fruit cocktail.

Even without the indication that it is peated, one would have noticed that it has a fine peat note on the nose. Not overpowering, but not subtle either. Fresh peaches and apricots, pineapple, some papaya and kiwi. Honey, vanilla, a little mild spice, plus freshly cut oak. |

Lively, slightly tingling and mildly peaty attack. Pineapple and grapefruit juice, apricot kernels, lemon effervescent tablet. The smoke note here tends quickly and clearly in the direction of dry wood. Tangerines, orange peel, almonds, hazelnuts. |

Medium-length, tart-fruity (grapefruit, pineapple) and almost bitter, which is supported by a lot of dry wood and a smoke note that is now clearly emerging again. |

Chimera Thanks to my buddy Benny J from 'de Limburg' – a big Irish whisky fan – I was already able to taste the Lichtburg expressions 1, 2 and 3 by Rolf Kaspar. Recently he pressed samples of 5, 6 and 7 into my hand (number 4 he either didn't want to share, or it's a forgotten work; I suspect the latter – just kidding, hey, Benny, I'm not complaining!). I like to put numbers 5 and 6 head-to-head, because they are two sister barrels – ex-bourbon barrels number 19 versus number 22. Both come from Bushmills, both laid to rest on April 3, 2001 and bottled in October 2022 . Helaba, this one is peated! That is very unexpected from this house, but very pleasant. This means it is not the classic fruit bomb, but kiwi, papaya and apricots still shine through. The peat is very subtle, mind you. It works fine. To complete the picture, I also added some freshly sawn wood to the nose. On taste, it is the tropical fruit that draws the attention, while the peat has a softly drying, sweet and sour touch and a slightly drying effect. I also get quite a bit of citrus fruit now, which I didn't have on the nose. Think tangerine, candied orange peels and even some yuzu. The finish is delicious: long, sweet, gently spicy and smoky. Would I be far wrong if I said that the malt was not peated, but the malt was matured in a former Islay barrel? Another figment of my imagination. Thank you, Benny!

In fact, it doesn't look like a "peated malt", but like a malt that was finished in a peated cask. Somehow too subtle. The clear bourbon structure is decisive and the smoke is more of an addition like the nuts to the beer at the bar. Still a great tasty whisky.

Soft, fruity-sweet smell, plus a great smoky-peaty note. Not very dominant, rather accompanying but still easily perceptible. The fruit notes go towards exotic fruits like mango, peach, pineapple, banana. Some vanilla and toffee provide the sweetness, with the smoke drifting more and more in the sweet direction. |

Slightly tart start on the palate, nice tingling-hot mouthfeel. Oak spice and the light smoke goes well. The smoke is a bit cooling here and not so peaty anymore. In addition, exotic fruits and a chocolaty sweetness. |

Pear, mirabelle plum, flat peach, burnt hay. The fruity note gradually diminishes over time and becomes grassier. But everything still seems a bit reserved. |

Pear, dusty, light alcoholic tingle, nice and oily. Hay turns into grain. The dusty note becomes stronger and stronger, and now, in addition to pear, mirabelle plum also appears. Both are very subtle. |

Mirabelle now very strong, for the first time also oak. Also slightly dry and still a bit dusty. The finish is medium long, but could be a bit more intense. |
Surprising but nevertheless very good Irish.
A lovely dram that doesn't focus solely on the peat (if at all). A nice complexity with some flavors to be discovered. Full review here: https://maltfascination.com/2024/07/03/bushmills-21-2001-2022-ex-bourbon-casks-times-2-lichtburg-rolf-kaspar/
Delicately fruity nose with an excellent peaty tang accompanying it. Soft, fresh examples of peach, pineapple and overripe banana. The smoky twist is very interesting to this profile. I enjoyed my sip better with a few drops of water. Undiluted it comes off a bit harsh, and this is where the whisky takes a rather ashy turn. The mouthfeel is very pleasing, covering the tongue with a nice fruity and chocolate note. The finish has a strong lemon feel to it, in a thirst quenching way. A very more-ish dram, even though it is unbalanced in some places. You can sense the original spirit and the peat are not natural partners. They are "on top" of each other, instead of forming a harmony. All in all, very interesting to drink.
A wonderful whisky, the light smoke harmonizes wonderfully with the exotic fruits and honey. Fantastic!
