Quick hit review. Online tasting 11/2024. Another blind tasting, another surprise. I seriously thought that this Mortlach was an old blend. Not very complex but quite intriguing, the nose leans towards quince jam, apricots and a touch of amaretto. On the palate, papaya, honey and soft oak spices accompany the harmonious and light mouthfeel. Marzipan, tannins and eucalyptus mark the short to medium finish. I think that this bottle is a little overrated, but it's a very appealing dram indeed. RATING: 4.0/5.0 stars ≙ 87 pts → FIRST-CLASS

A good sherry profile, but the oak is a little overdone.

Sweet, tart, of medium duration. |
Needs a lot of time in the glass and, despite the already much-diminished strength, appreciates a small drop of water. Then it unfolds its true potential (especially at the end of the flavor development and in the finish). Needs to be "chewed on" for quite a whole to really show its strength on the palate, but it sure is worth it.

Without time & water: mellow and very pleasant, but also closed-up and a bit oaky, 88 points. With time & water: refill sherry and muscular yet floral Speyside spirit in perfect harmony, 90 points. I'm settling for the middle: 89 points. Really a lot of old oak, but it's tolerable for the age. Once you get past that, you're rewarded with buttered shortbread, dark honey, gooseberry, ripe apricot, soft Speyside florals, beeswax, old leather, sunflower oil, cashews, darker notes of charcoal and wood ash, as well as some (very muted) liquorice and Oloroso umami. Admittedly, it's all very soft and a bit fleeting, so this one's certainly not for thrill-seekers and lovers of intense aromas. But as a subtle, old-style sherried dram that balances cask and spirit and mainly convinces by displaying the benefits of long-term barrel-aging, it's well worth the money. |

Begins mellow and softly sour on jammy fruits, gets then leathery (the refill sherry), darker and increasingly sweeter and more richly honeyed, and then some more and more (and more), following this trajectory into a spectacular finale, full of precisely-measured oak spice, wild honey, red-berry fruit jam and roast flavors. All at once. This is where it wins me over: I've rarely had a malt that develops as linearly like this, in a steady upward motion, with the flavors just rising and intensifying all the way into a climatic finish, and all the different components peaking at the same time. Really good. |

Mouth-coating to the max, with an oily film that covers and clings to everything. Savory salinity, wild berries, honey, almond butter and mellow old oak. |

This was surprisingly gentle and easy to drink compared to the G&M bottle I also reviewed recently. The drams shared a certain tart berry profile, but this one was generally more subtle and with a surprising herbaceous element that came through strongly at the end. This was pleasant to sip on and relax with, but it lacked the depth and richness that really captured my attention on other Mortlach.

A very nice bottling. The only question I'm wondering is: Where are the typical herbal or meaty notes from Mortlach? In the end I almost don't care, this is really tasty. I also recommend the review of Totoro. He's a little more enthusiastic than I am, but I can easily go along with his descriptions. This one really needs time to open. The nose is lovely, the palate is well-balanced with just enough oak (or not too much, depending of your sensibility). Very good selection from Le Gus't.
A very good Mortlach in my opinion, but needs a little time to develop. The oak is present, but fortunately not too much. And I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t dry at all, something you would expect from this type of whisky. Another winner from Le Gus’t.

(Tasted blind) NOSE: Dried red fruits, summer forest honey, fresh pears, marzipan, dill, dry tea leaves, green tea, hints of smoke(?) and menthol. Highland Park like qualities on the nose. (91p) TASTE: The arrival is sweet and herbal with dried red fruits. On the mid palate sweet, with sweetened, fruity darjeeling tea. Fruity distillate. (90p) FINISH: Sweet, with cooling menthol and herb drops. Fairly long. (90p) OVERALL: Unconventional but looovely Mortlach. Total score 90 points.

Always well done with Legus't, rarely disappointed, a quality-price ratio still intact. Not my favorite, however, but easily drinkable.

A combination of a well-breathed or washed successful sherry cask. A rare combination of age and lightness ... The nose has a lot of green fresh cucumbers to oak tannins with a touch of noble sherry. Zero alcoholicity and excellent balance. Old-fashioned style! I am very annoyed to note that. It's undeniably very well done, but the palate is a bit too stiff and oaky for my taste. I must also say that I am getting painful with all those old Speyside sherry which on the whole does not make me dream anymore like before ... I would say 89/100, but an amateur of the genre would note that above.

This is what I like about whisky - honey, a little bit of dust, dried fruit, a lemongrass stalk. There is a tree in the background, but it does not interfere. |

The body is a little watery for that age. The taste is the same honey with raisins. The sourness from the lemograss is felt more and the wood is felt stronger than the nose intended. |

Not really what I had in mind when it comes to sherried Mortlach, nevertheless very tasty and thus successful. Talking about Mortlach, uhm, where was that infamous meatiness? It's in there if you look hard enough. Just not on the level you'd wish for. Ah well, besides a little too much oak here and there a good whisky. Normally I'd buy two bottles but they didn't allow me. It's one of those rare cases where one was just enough.
