Mint This is the most recent bottling of the Oban Distillers Edition, distilled in 2006 and bottled in 2020 after a second maturation on a Montilla sherry cask. I am putting it head-to-head with the release from last year. Elegant nose on yellow and very ripe fruit. Think peach, mirabelles, cherries and banana. Lots of raisons as well, with the drop of honey. The classic, maritime character of the malt shines through, but the nose of this one enjoys mostly sweet notes. A soft touch of nutmeg and some tobacco give it weight. I quite like this. It is nicely full flavored. Oily and softly seasoned. Think again nutmeg, but also some cloves. Very early on the fruit appears (sweet notes but also something sweet and sour like grapefruit), but is soon joined by woodsmoke, green garden herbs and mint. Yes, you may call this complex indeed. The spices and fruit gently fade away into the middle long finish, but the fresh mint lingers. Frankly, Oban has never disappointed me and probably never will.
Quite decent whisky for a friendly company. Balanced, with a wide range of flavor profiles.

Oban Distillery is located in the middle of the town of the same name on the Scottish west coast. A great setting, Oban is the gateway to the Hebrides, opposite is the Isle of Mull and then comes the Outer Hebrides. Can the whisky reflect that? Will it be maritime and wild? glen-efze.de
Laundry Line in the Meadow The aroma was pleasantly fragrant with mixed notions of old-fashioned fruit and floral candies— musk stood out with berries, oranges, and a vaguely tropical fruit punch. Orris and lavender appeared at times drawing in dried grass with occasional hints of butter pastries and tangerine. I was surprised at the floral quality, which was never overbearing but always present with a gentle coastal salinity. The flavors were simpler on the palate, with far more typical Oban orange and fruit notes. Florals, spices, and herbal botanicals of all kinds drifted further in the background, gradually transitioning toward tea and orange blossom at the end. The finish was long and gentle, with fruit, more subtle notions of grass, and a kiss of salt. I was surprised at how similar my notes were between this release and the 1989 vintage I posted previously. Fruit, herbs, grass, anise/licorice— all appeared on these two vintages, even though they were distilled 17 years apart. That was a real testament to the ability of the master blenders to maintain a generally consistent flavor profile— drift was inevitable, but the similarities were striking. Overall, I preferred the older release, though not by a whole lot. It felt a bit more structured and well-composed, though it was a touch less unique than this.
A well executed finish variant on the regular 14. It adds a sweet but fresh and floral layer.

Citrus peel, sweet vanilla and quite floral (hibiscus!). Then more typical Oban notes come through: wet dog and sea spray. Interesting and entertaining nose! |

Citrus fruits, vanilla and hibisucs again. Then cacao, honey and a rather sour note come through. |

Fresh and sour fruits, mainly grapefruit. Sweet vanilla, cardamom and lemon grass. A green and slightly tart note lingers. |

a pleasant start with a nice woody note, plums and cherries, the alcohol is well integrated, I don't know that from an Oban! |

pleasant, oak and dry sherry, with every sip there is a little candy sweetness on the tongue, which fades into a dry wood feeling in the mouth, overall not bad and for me one of the better Oban bottlings |

As far as I can reconstruct it months later on the basis of the notes, tasted more later in the evening, so maybe a bit biased from the previous ones. Soon I'll open a bottle that I was given as a gift, then the whole thing will be clarified again.
Similar to the base release. But the taste is brighter and less sweet. Noticeably drying.

The spirits for the release spent the majority of their maturation in bourbon casks. This was followed by additional maturation in Montilla Fino-seasoned casks. This rather sweet wine is produced using sherry techniques, but outside the Sherry Triangle, so it is not technically considered sherry. Like the standard 14-year-old release, Oban DE is bottled at 43% ABV, infused, and filtered. Nose: Quite sweet, rich, and viscous. Caramelized ripe fruits (pear, orange, yellow plum), raisins, dried banana, flower honey, minerality, spice, spicy notes, light smoke, tannins. Palate: The palate greets with a wave of fruity sweetness, more pronounced minerality, pepperiness, and smoke. Ripe fruit, honey, mixed peppers, grapefruit peel, suede, ginger, oak. Finish: Sweet, fruity, honeyed, peppery, mineral, smoky, and tannic. Length: Below average. Balance: An interesting, complex, and mature malt that harmoniously intertwines sweetness, pepperiness, minerality, and smoky notes. N22, P21, F20, B21
