В аромате — цитрусовые (лимон, апельсин, мандариновое масло) поверх торфяного дыма, золы, йода и морской свежести, с солёной лакрицей, ванилью, мёдом и лёгкими травяными и цветочными нотами; профиль читается как типичный, очень чистый Islay с минимальным следом бочки, а кому-то напоминает даже мескаль своей кислой копчёной древесностью. Во вкусе плотнее дым и торф, ясная лакрица, чёрный перец, сладкий цитрус и кремовая ваниль, но заметнее проступает горечь и обугленная древесина; послевкусие долгое — чёрная лакрица, перец, торфяной дым, тёмный шоколад, подсыхающая зольная древесина. Оценки согласованы плотно, большинство в диапазоне 84–87. Опытные ревьюеры ставят 85–86 и главную претензию адресуют горечи во вкусе, которая недотягивает до обещаний аромата. Расхождения на краях: восторженные оценки 89–90 подчёркивают чистоту и сходство с сублимными 12-летними спецрелизами, называя виски крайне недооценённым, тогда как нижняя граница (82) критикует завышенную цену и спиртовую прямолинейность при слабом влиянии бочки, считая, что деньги разумнее потратить на обычный Lagavulin 16.

The nose is versatile, a lot of citrus fruits with some hints of peatsmoke. In taste more and more bitterness, making it a little less attractive than the nose promisses.
Нос 86 Pretty some alcohol, very fruity, citrus, with some peaty notes, sweet smoke. Grassy, hay, ripe fruits, even some floral elements.
Вкус 84 Sal ammoniac, licorice, sweet smoke, peat, quite some pepper, fruity, orange. A whiff of bitterness. Also some caramel sweetness.
Финиш 84 Now more bitter notes, orange zest, bitter smoke, middle long. Later on some caramel sweetness.

A perfectly nice Islay (Lagavulin) experience. Less complex than the 12 yo CS special releases, but then again it's a lot cheaper as well.
Нос 87 Fresh peat, not that heavy on pure smoke, salty and initially even a little floral. Quite sweet, vanilla, lemon, sweet oranges, salted liquorice and butter, mild wood spices and a little dusty.
Вкус 86 Slightly fatter on the smoke and peat, clear liquorice, still sweet with citrus and creamy vanilla, quite some black pepper and a bitter charred wood note.
Финиш 86 Long with black liquorice, black pepper, some sweet citrus, ending with a drying note of charred wood and some ashiness.

Absolutely brilliant IB Lagavulin. It indeed resembles the 12-yo releases. Clean, ash, fish oil, it's all there. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Mostly with my friend Franzman.

Mezcal from the west coast of Scotland? This is a pretty naked Lagavulin, not stellar but not messed about with either. Definitely worth the price of admission!
Нос 86 Right after pouring - if you gave this to me blind and said it was mezcal, I’d believe you. The mix of complex citrus notes with sour, sooty wood smoke will fool you. Very nice. As it settles for a few minutes, we’re brought back to whisky territory again. A somewhat buttery maltiness takes the lead, supported by citrus notes - but that mezcal sourness never quite disappears, and you wouldn’t want it to. There’s compound herbs: lavender, thyme and rosemary. Water reveals a chalkiness and then some tropical fruits emerge. Be careful when diluting, it’s a pretty light dram and doesn’t need a lot.
Вкус 87 Spotlessly clean and clear. Good balance. The sweetness of barley sugars mixes with a herbal sourness and light wood spice. The palate is quite a bit more conventional than the nose - I miss the citrus sourness and mezcal notes.
Финиш 86 Light but long enough. A soft smoke carries varied herbal notes and some marijuana ash. Very pleasant.

A rare example of a secret/undisclosed distillery where we can be 100% certain of its origin - Lagavulin in this case. Such a smart move with the label :) Nosing it immediately reminds me of the 12yo annual Special Releases which are sublime. Not on the exact same level, but it's not that far away from that quality. Very pure and clean on the nose, with very little cask influence or interference. Peat, cold smoke, ash, iodine, pepper, sea breeze, fig, lemon candy, tangerine oil, salted caramel, banana candy, licorice, malted barley, black olive, postman's rubberband and some mint along the way. That's some cask you've got yourselves there, WIN. Very good, let's see if the palate can keep up. And it does in an almost exact copy of the nose. Very clean again and although this is a certified smokebomb, it is well mannered. There's peat, cold smoke, ash, fig, lemon, strawberry, salted caramel, honey, licorice, brown sugar, almond and some vanilla. The finish is long lasting, with peat smoke, dark chocolate, sweet licorice, sultana, malt and sour cream. Lagavulin in its prettiest, naked form. Need I say more? Yes I do: terribly underrated...

Heavily overpriced. Though it has an age statement of 12 yo, it is very spirit driven and seems to have very little cask influence. A few bonus points for it being almost cask strength, non chill-filtered and natural coroured though. But I still feel my money would have been al lot better spent buying a regular Lagavulin 16.
