Quick hit review. A young malt from fresh Oloroso casks - usually that should set off alarm bells. However, the good people at Springbank know what they are doing. The nose is extremely funky and flinty, think of imploded TVs, copper coins and gunpowder, taking turns with pink grapefruit, plums and barnyard notes. On the palate, zesty oranges, lime juice and raisins mingle with caramel, menthol and hints of salt. Citrus fruits, resinous oak and lingering herbs remain in the savory finish. I'm pleased that the sherry isn't too dominant - this is a great Hazelburn. RATING: 4.0/5.0 stars ≙ 87 pts → FIRST-CLASS
A sample from Slàinte Mhath. In the recent Springbank release I chose the Longrow 100 Proof over this. That is not opened yet, so I can't be sure, but I liked this one so much I may come to regret my choice.

First thing that hit me is the sherry wood. But it's all good. Quality cask. Chocolate, coffee, plums, sweet orange. Light note of old mechanical machinery. |

Oily texture. Sweet dark coffee, almost like a coffee liqueur. Light spice and some dry herbs. Despite that Hazelburn is un-peated there is a good amount of "funky" earthiness here. |

More wood coming through in a medium+ finish. Still a lot of sweetness, but it goes in the direction of dry. |
A cute nose promised, but no... then young and simple... the disappointment of the evening. 21 20+ 20 20+ 82

The nose is an absolute force: very expressive, surprisingly ripe and – for a Hazelburn – quite robust. On the palate and in the finish, it definitely reveals itself as an eight-year-old youngster, so that in the end you get exactly what the label says: an 8yo Hazelburn.

Fresh leather, a touch of furniture polish, raisin bread, rum-grape-nut chocolate, marzipan, and a hint of fermented blueberries. Earthy and mineral, although the latter aroma is nowhere near as pronounced as, for example, in the current Springbank 8 Local Barley. It doesn't make an immature impression at all; the nose is very promising. |

A fruity and creamy start, slightly tingling, similar to a not-yet-fully-dissolved multivitamin tablet. The taste is also consistent, with its fruity notes seeming more like they're of artificial origin. After the initial creaminess that settled on the tongue, the malt rises from the tongue—driven by a menthol note—and now floats freely in the mouth. Spicy, mineral aromas, marzipan, strong espresso. |

Relatively short, but very tasty, mineral and spicy finish, with a hint of menthol still present. |
Reminds me of Springbanks from the past, very well-done.

The nose is pretty old-school. Leather, wax, blueberry, kaki fruit, red apple and peat. |

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2025/11/28/dramdiary-sessions-nov-2025/ C: If you’re wanting for oloroso to steer young Hazelburn, then this could be your bag, and for many, it’s just that. From my perspective, plenty is lost/compromised [to the cask], including jam & quince jelly notes so prevalent and key to the Hazelburn profile. That said, the oloroso character, here, is welcomed in its own right, but like Kilkerran also, I often struggle to see the pros over the cons over this approach – as someone who feels protective over HB you understand. All in all, plenty to admire.

This was a sample courtesy of Peatbogger and Slainte Mhath. Again it's been a long time since I've had a Hazelburn and it's good to see you my friend I've missed you.

The unmistakable Oloroso nose and this has the trademarks. It's always baked cake for me and if it's straight out of the oven then it's a winner. Stewed and dried fruits is another one. There is something warm and pleasing. |

This just hits the spot on first arrival an then just snowballs with flavours and texture. This comes from a high end cask, just about flawless. A lovely mouthfeel and it's firing in all directions. Do I detect some smokey notes in there somewhere. I'm not even going to attempt to add water, it would be a crime. |

There is minimal spice in this and at times that let's everything else shine, then the spice can do what it wants towards the end. |

The malt has its qualities, which fit very well into the range of slightly dirty Hazelburn Olotoso maturations. At this young age, it's absolutely unmistakably Springbank Distillery, even though it's unpeated and triple distilled. The nose promises a bit more depth than the palate can actually convey. Nevertheless, I like this young maturation, even slightly better than many of the 12/13/14 year releases; the casks were quite active over the eight years. The bottle was freshly opened yesterday, and if there's any oxygen left, Hazelburn will come back into my sights, as I currently prefer the distillery's light and heavily smoky versions. Edit 11 days later: The air has already done the whole thing a world of good. I'm raising the rating slightly for the neck and significantly for the finish.

Put this filthy thing up for auction too
Typical Springbank musty aroma from an old cellar. Red berry compote with tart currant. Lots of cinnamon. Orange studded with clove. Slightly pungent on the nose. Significantly sweeter on the palate. The fruit clearly dominates. Sweet cherries with cream and a dash of Amarena cherry. Very tasty but relatively simple.
