В аромате — восковые и минеральные тона (мел, галька, медь), мёд, зелёные и жёлтые фрукты (дыня, персик, тропические оттенки), травяные и медовые ноты в дубовой оправе; наиболее авторитетные ревьюеры подчёркивают старомодный, комплексный характер, которому нужно время раскрыться (полчаса и больше). Вкус сладкий на старте (ячменный сахар, вересковый мёд), затем вступают пряно-горьковатые дубовые ноты, восстанавливая баланс, плюс восковые, ореховые и умами-оттенки, зелёные и жёлтые фрукты, белый перец, имбирь. Послевкусие среднее-длинное, кремовое с перечными и восковыми тонами, суховатая дубовая пряность к концу.
Хвалят прежде всего безупречный баланс, гармоничность, элегантное медленное раскрытие и нехарактерную для Ben Nevis фруктовость; отмечают отличное соотношение цены и качества и «старый» стиль. Критика минимальна: дубовая пряность может разделить публику, а из недостатков называют лишь среднее, не самое яркое послевкусие и прямолинейность профиля. Расхождений между опытными и остальными по существу нет — и те, и другие описывают восково-фруктово-дубовый профиль и ставят близкие оценки; разброс невелик (в основном 89–92, единичная 94), что говорит о высокой согласованности мнений.
[May 2026] A 30-year old Ben Nevis distilled in 1996, what should go wrong? Actually, nothing... ...as this is another fine example why 1996 is one of the best vintage years in the modern Ben Nevis history. It offers an exellent complex and balanced profile, with dozens of different impressions both in the nose and on the palate.
| Нос | 91 | The colour is yellow gold, and the nose offers a delicate and complex profile grassy, fruity and honey aromas in a fine wooden setting. It demands some breathing time to fully enfold its flavours, give it about 30 minutes (or more). There is not a single off-note or imbalance to detect, and interesting waxy, herbal and mineralic aromas join in over time. This truly is an old-style nose, just the way I adore it. |

But quickly the spicy-bitter wooden notes join in and re-establish a balanced profile. After some chewing fresh (home-grown) fruits show up, as do waxy and nutty flavours. Fantastic whisky. These are just my impressions from memory. I drank three drams while watching sports together and only paid casual attention to the individual aromas. Besides the usual aromas one would expect given the age, previous use, and distillery, I also detect a fitting note of varnish, sometimes found in very old bourbon barrels. Surprisingly fruity for a Ben Nevis. The entire spectrum of aromas is perfectly balanced, harmonious, and intense – the balance is impressive. That's the beauty of this whisky, and it's one of those unassuming, high-quality whiskies. On the palate, the aromas develop slowly and with wonderful elegance. With a small sample I would probably give it 91 points, but if you can taste this whisky from an open bottle and have it poured again, then I would also give it 92 points.

Ex-bourbon matured, 30 years old, Ben Nevis distilled in 1996, bottled at around 46% ABV. Well, you'll get exactly what you would expect based on the key data. Yellow fruit salat, oak, malt, honey, caramel, black pepper, gentle beer bitterness, vanilla, somethin floral/perfumy. Great whisky!

Nose: Vanilla, Ice cream, Cantaloupe, slight tropical notes of papaya, starfruit and custard apple. 92p Mouth: Intense vanilla notes, apricot, grapes, applecrumble, tiramisu, dark chocolate, cacao, sweet coffee. 90p Finish: Bitter oranges, freshly roasted coffee, vanilla-chocolate pudding. 90p Overall: 91p a great dram, very straightforward but extremely delicate.
