Half a year more maturation than batch # 4, a slightly different barrel composition (85% ex-bourbon, 15% ex-sherry to 80% ex-bourbon, 20% ex-sherry) makes a difference in terms of taste. In terms of quality, however, ultimately not, both batches are in my opinion the same. Interesting that Batch # 5 is much smokier than Batch # 4 despite the slightly longer ripening time. Since I still have a remainder of batch # 2 with 60.9% on hand, I poured myself a little comparison dram. Batch 2 was bottled on 09/24/2019, a little more than two years before Batch # 5. And that really makes a difference. Batch # 5 no longer has the grassy and green notes from Batch # 2 at all. Batch # 2 was smokier compared to Batch # 1, as is now the case with Batch # 5 compared to Batch # 4. In the comparison of the peat smoke intensity Batch # 2 vs. Batch # 5, however, Batch # 5 clearly wins, which is quite astonishing if one proceeds from the general principle: the longer it matures, the more smoke breaks down. Even if (in my opinion) Batch # 5 is qualitatively the same as Batch # 4 and there is no batch improvement for the first time: in the long term this will be a whisky that can definitely compete with a Laphroaig 10 CS.

Compared to Batch # 3 and # 4, it lives up to its name on the label: (very!) Heavily peated. So far, no batch has had such a peat smoke boom, the note of smoke literally bores into your nose. As a friend of well-peated Islay whiskys, you will of course enjoy this. It clearly comes from the ex-bourbon cask corner and, in addition to the smoky note, initially delivers honey, vanilla and caramel along with a note of grated lime peel and grapefruit. While Batch # 4 still came across as clay and earthy, Batch # 5 shows more of its maritime side. Mandarins, orange peel, quince jelly, with nutmeg and pepper. |

Immensely powerful and smoky start. Shows directly its origin Campbeltown and covers the tongue with citrus water, tangerines, salt water, pebble flavor. The note of peat smoke shapes the taste, makes it tart, pleasantly bulky and lets the spices (nutmeg, pepper, chilli flakes) stand out clearly. Much less caramel than batch # 4, but just as well supplied with white coffee and marzipan. |

The intense peat smoke note means that he doesn't really want to say goodbye. Batch # 4 was already one of those on-the-doorstep nonsense, so it seems to run in the family. Marzipan, sea spray, a beach fire made of dry wood and peat sod, lime juice. |
Nice whisky, good combination of peatiness and fruit (in nose) and sweetness (in taste). Some grassy notes, hay as well.

I'm surprised by this - very good profile. I think 20 - 30 years of bottle ageing could do this a lot of good... must try some other batches I've missed.

Nose still greedy despite the smoke. Vergeoise, pastry cream, fluted, frangipane, meringue. Then marine elements, lobsters with mayonnaise, shrimp crisps. Intense iodine. Scallops. Some hay in the background. The palate is even more pastry, sponge cake, macaroons, creamy and ashy vanilla. The peat gives a nice thickness. Very long finish, cola, dry earth, crazy intensity. Milk chocolate, traces of charcoal. Fine sand. Almond paste. Again a great success, where the smoke is only there to bring out other flavors, gourmet, marine, farm. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2022/11/kilkerran-heavily-peated-batch-n5.html

Phenolics, I think... citrus, yellow fruits, banana, pineapple, antonovka, pistachio ice cream, fruitcake, crumble, vanilla pudding. The sweetness hides the whole aroma terribly, but I think it smells like smoke. |

Quite long, probably due to the astringency and sour aftertaste, consistent with the earlier characteristics, green gooseberry, vinegar. |
Nose: sweet peat smoke with vanilla, hints of caramel, honey and fresh fruits such as lemons, white grapes, unripe bananas and green apples. Taste: Pleasantly creamy, vanilla, lemon candy and white grapes. Season with salt and pepper, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, banana, lemon. black tea, malt. Finish: Sweet and smoky, grape, quite long, warm and warming, citrus, vanilla, honey
Powerful, intensely smoky, but still pleasantly sweet and not medicinal. Delicious!

An earthy smoke emerged from piles of burning leaves in the autumn—over time more like chimney smoke with the fragrant scent of burning pine and pecan wood. Hints of brined olives and tapenades with capers arrived with smoked salmon and oysters. Medium-bodied, more charred fruits popped on the palate with a vegetal creaminess further in— clearly a choice between apple or pumpkin pie. The earthiness of the spirit appeared with more autumn leaves and fallen logs covered in wood ear mushrooms arrived, tinged with the sweet smoke of a chimney burning pine wood and a kiss of old tires. The lovely brine from the nose hid further in the background and only gradually emerged as some of the sweeter fruits fell to the back. The finish was long with orchard fruits, oak, and a bit of earthy smoke. Fantastic stuff— this early batch of the heavily peated malt produced by Glengyle showcased plenty of the earthiness and autumn vibes that I fell in love with from the first batch. I find those notes are not as strong any more, and more of the orchard fruits and creaminess that popped initially here, dominated the more recent batches I have tried. The interplay of tangy brine with some of the earthiness provided a good contrast to the sweeter introduction. Overall, a pleasant autumn whisky with a lovely evolution; friendlier than some of the very early batches and a bit more tame.
Excellent, powerful whisky, it is very interesting to see how far the progress will come!

everything else is secondary to the taste experience.. the whisky is almost solid, like chewing through a piece of smoky, pastrami flavored hard jello.. what a beast!… i can certainly follow the association with a Laphroaig 10 cs.. everything dialled up.. the sweetness.. the spicy oak.. the oiliness.. the young ones finish fast (blush!), but at least the nose improves with time.. the fragrant peat takes center stage.. smoke is almost perfumed.. oh, my, this is really quite an achiever! waiting at the bottom of the glass, some Springbank engine oils!

I get a sweet peat smoke with vanilla, a hint of caramel, honey and fresh fruits like lemons, white grapes, unripe bananas and green apples. After a while in a glass and with a drop of water, the fruit becomes more tropical with canned pineapple and peach. The maritime sky and wet stones refer to Kilkerran. Furthermore, it is also clearly related to Longrow Peated, but then a flight (or two) higher! |

Kilkerran Heavily Peated is not the first time they are not very smoky for me. Immediately smoke, but then it goes into the background. Good dense aroma, the balance of barrels is perfectly chosen. Not sharp in aroma, despite its almost 58 alc. The aroma is dominated by bourbon motifs, sherry helmets can only slightly complement. Drinking, tasty, meaty. At its own expense sensible molt.

Conclusion: Very good, very good, nothing to kneel down and analyze for a long time, rather to appreciate but comfortably drink on the side. For my taste, there should be more going on in the taste, the finish is also rather short and uneventful - but the profile fits, it does what it has to do to smell and taste good. 85/100

very tasty dram! this is one of those drams you "eat" more than you drink it. needs no watering
Harsh, sulfuric, unpleasant overall. Thin yet oily and hot mouthfeel. Air and water in different amounts don't improve this much. It's not poorly made, just not for me. Love Springbank, Longrow, and Hazelburn I love, just not this Kilkerran.

I'm normally a huge fan of Campbelltown whiskies and this is the first time I've been mildly disappointed. I'm now a month in to breaking into this bottle and the first thing ye get on the nose is furniture polish. The spirit is overpowering. But then I admit it's getting better and chilling out a wee bit, but it's taken a long time to get more complex tasting notes. And don't add water... this was a revelation.

At 57.7% abv, I've been putting a drop of water in this until this moment and for the first time I haven't. My god that's an improvement... don't do it!!! Drink this neat (after the bottle's been open for at least a month). It's prickly and oily, the smoke is nice but not the only thing you taste when it's diluted. It's certainly not a Springbank 10 or a Longrow, which I would consistently rate in the 90s, but I'm starting to warm to it... |
